The Corinth Canal - on our sailboat! The most expensive canal per mile in the world - is it worth it? In July 2022 after sheltering from the winds in a rickety Corinth harbour we took our sailboat through the Corinth Canal, a 4 mile shortcut from the Ionian to the Aegean Sea which bypasses the long journey around the bottom of the Peloponnese. Having been shut since the beginning of 2021, after a major landslide, it opened in July 2022 for just 4 months before shutting again in October 2022 - and we were lucky enough to transit through before it closed. It is due to reopen sometime in 2023 once more remedial works have been completed. Modern diesel engines are some of the most reliable mechanical creations on the planet, but they are only as reliable as the fuel delivery systems that serve them. In our case, we have been experiencing a problem known as "fuel leak back" - a problem caused by a faulty check ball seal that resides deep inside our Racor filters. The symptom is that the fuel inside the filter leaks back into the diesel tank, which typically results in air being pulled into the filter. The big problem is that the resulting air inside the filter can get sucked into the high pressure diesel pump and then make its way into the engine. If this occurs, the engine suddenly dies and must be bled before it will run again. This has the potential to be a very dangerous problem. Diving Raja Ampat on a Liveaboard (Lady Denok) for 10 days over the New Year 2023. We dove Central Raja Ampat and South Raja Ampart (Misool) in 26 dives over 8 dive days. Boat left Sorong, Indonesia on the 30th of December 2022 and returned in Sorong the 8th of January. We did 5 days in Central Raja and 3 days in Misool. Clarity in Central Raja Ampat was not the best, around 10-20 meters. In Misool it was better on some sites (20-30m). 10/10 the best dive trip yet. The corals and amount of fish is something to experience. Favorite dive sites: Melissa's Garden for coral (mindblowing). MayHam for coral and shear number of fish. In some areas you cannot see more than 5 meters because the density of fish (insane!). Misool sites are in the mist of hundreds of small islands and lagoons. Islands looks like a scene out of Jurassic Park. Incredible. TONS of macro, unfortunately the GoPro 11 cannot capture it. Lots of Nudi's, Pygmy Seahorses (tinyyy!), Pygmy squids, assortment of very unique shrimps, night dives saw Orangutan crabs, even more crazy ornate shrimps, and juvenile fishes. GoPro barely captured 1% of what we saw in Raja Ampat. Def time to upgrade the camera game, GoPro did Raja Ampat no justice. Final note, Raja Ampat is best experienced with more advanced divers, and using a computer to maximize your experience down there. Reached NDL's almost every dive, and pushed into Deco on a couple. WORTH IT. Even your safety stops are epic. Currents can be strong on few sites and on one dive (Nudi Rock, Misool) it was a washing machine with very unpredictable currents, including pretty epic down drafts....Reef hook quickly and enjoy the awesome show of mother nature. That said, most dives were very pleasant. Just got to keep in mind the currents are what makes this place so healthy and coral gardens like nothing else by bringing in so much nutrients. 12 gennaio 2023 - Acqua a bordo e problemi alla deriva su Maserati Multi70: “Durante la notte di ieri, saltando sulle onde a cannamorta, è esploso lo stopper del tiragiù deriva. La deriva è schizzata fuori dalla sua sede e ricadendo è uscita dalle guide spaccando tutti i fondocorsa”. Ormai al quarto giorno di regata, Giovanni Soldini trasmette aggiornamenti dal trimarano e ricostruisce l’episodio occorso nelle ultime 24 ore: “Di solito a tenere insieme la deriva ci pensano due cal o slitte: una all’uscita dello scafo, l’altra un metro e mezzo sopra al fondoscafo. Ieri notte però la deriva si è sfilata dalla sua sede alta ed è quindi rimasta fissata precariamente nella cal del fondoscafo, libera di ciondolare a destra e a sinistra. Le violente oscillazioni hanno così sfondato la scassa, una sorta di “astuccio” che tiene fuori l’acqua dalla barca. Tutta la zona della deriva è racchiusa in due compartimenti stagni che sono pensati proprio per non allagare la barca in casi del genere. Entrambi i compartimenti, in questo momento, sono pieni di acqua, ma non risultano altre perdite. Siamo riusciti a rinfilare la deriva nella sua sede alta e l’abbiamo fissata a livello del ponte con legature di fortuna. Nel complesso però il peso dell’acqua imbarcata costituisce il 30% del peso totale di Maserati Multi70. Abbiamo anche provato a svuotare il comparto con secchi e una pompa ma dopo un’ora di lavoro il volume riconquistato era del 10% e alla fine abbiamo gettato la spugna. Il problema per ora è limitato alla performance, la barca è senz’altro sotto sforzo, ma reagisce molto bene e speriamo continui cosi!”. All’ultimo rilevamento delle 12:00 UTC dell’11 gennaio, la flotta dei tre MOD70 ha percorso più di 2200 miglia e si trova a meno di 900 dal traguardo a Grenada. A flotilla of spectator boats and a huge crowd in Marina Lanzarote witnessed the start of the 2023 RORC Transatlantic Race,  which is supported by Calero Marinas,  the International Maxi Association and the Yacht Club de France.  In glorious conditions,  the fleet got away to a clean downwind start,  a mile from Marina Lanzarote.     This is the weekly Sailing Highlights show the January 13 2023 World on Water.  Meanwhile in Alicante Spain the first part of this edition of The Ocean Race was the In Port Race  There are two classes of boats competing and they are not racing against each other.  So there was two separate races,  the first for the IMOCAs then,  on a fading breeze,  the old VO65's.  We have a clip from the 11th Hours racing team in the first race.  One of the boats fighting for the lead in the Trans-Atlantic race is Giovanni Soldini in his Maserati,  Mod 70 trimaran racing machine.  Here is his exit from Lanzarote.  In the Americas Cup testing arena,  INEOS Britannia's T6 boat is now in full action mode in Palma.  Helmsman Leigh McMillan,was at the wheel on Day 7. Here is his summery.  Here is our edited version of last Sunday's The Ocean Race IMOCA In-Port Race in Alicante.   Team Malizia (Germany) won the In-Port Race after a frenetic battle that saw four of the five IMOCAs hold the lead at some point during a highly unpredictable and nerve-wracking contest.  The 2023 Melges 15 Winter Series got underway on January 7 in Jensen Beach Florida.  Hosted by Melges,  the two-day event already had a record 70 boats registered.  With more than 140 sailors expected,  the event marked the largest Class event to date!    In barely a breath of wind,  Wind-Whisper Racing Team ghosted across the finishing line the VO65 In-Port Race Alicante by a comfortable margin.   The other five boats failed to finish inside the 15-minute time limit which started ticking the moment Wind-Whisper had slipped across the finish line.  The VO65's are contesting only a small number of legs in the race as the IMOCAas are going the full way around the world with stops.
