In this video, I show you how to fabricate your own heavy duty steel loading ramps. This project was inspired by my need for ramps for a flatbed trailer that I bought some years ago that didn't have ramps. I used some "tough" aluminum ramps to load a 2000lb tractor on the trailer which worked OK, but unloading it was a different story! The tractor collapsed the ramps and it fell from the trailer. Luckily it landed on all 4 tires and nobody was hurt and the tractor is fine! Below is the materials list that should help you get through the project 24' of 2"x2"x3/16" angle iron 24' of 1.5"x1.5"x3/16" angle iron Metal chop saw or angle grinder with cutoff wheels MIG welder with .030-.035 steel wire Good luck with your project! Charlie and Pat Ball were the principle owners and builders of Roseate. Over the years the brothers have built shoal draft boats. In searching for an ideal shoal draft trawler they discovered the New York City naval architect, Dave Gerr. His 42 foot Summer Kyle design was of great interest to Charlie and Pat. Covey Island Boat Works in Nova Scotia had built two of these 42 footers. A Gerr designed 42 was located on the Florida east coast. Charlie and Pat sea trialed that yacht. They were so impressed that they purchased a set of plans from Gerr. With Gerr's permission, Jim Ryan a local naval architect, digitized the drawings and stretched the midsection of the design out to achieve a 44 foot overall length The additional 2' allowed for a more spacious saloon. The brothers leased space at Precision Boat Works, a local boat builder's factory in Palmetto, Florida and finalized construction plans in 2000. Actual construction began in 2001. In 2003 Ray Marshall, a freelance boatbuilder from Nova Scotia joined Roseate's boat building team. A crew from the boat building facility had been working along side Charlie and Pat in the construction. Ray's specialty was ship's carpentry and ship's systems. His vast experience in boatbuilding made him the ideal choice to head up the installation of the boat's mechanical, electrical and plumbing-MEP systems as well as the woodwork. Day 1 at Sea! It's time to put civilization behind us and some miles under the keel! Our destination is the Ragged Islands, Bahamas some 600NM west of our current position. This passage is the culmination of months of planning and dreaming and we're as nervous as we are excited about getting underway. We pull up the hook, set full sail, and watch Puerto Rico slip over the horizon, all while feeling a bit nervous as this will be our longest passage so far. It's juist Brian and I handling the watches, the cooking and the sail changes by ourselves all while taking care of Sierra at the same time. But sailors must sail and now it's time to get underway!
