Injustice or a clever interpretation of the rules? Some argue that the 1988 America’s Cup was not a legal match. Legal drama surrounded the 27th America’s Cup well before they got to the start line and well after they crossed the finish line. This Deed of Gift match between the Michael Fay backed Team New Zealand and Dennis Conner’s Stars and Stripes saw the controversial birth of catamarans in the America’s Cup. This is the story. We saved the best (worst???) for last! As our splash date was getting closer and closer, we were scrambling to finish everything on time. But we still had one of the biggest and most important jobs looming over us: replacing our transmission. It turns out to be a massive undertaking with lots of hiccups along the way, and spoiler alert, this won’t be the last time I have to replace the transmission (stay tuned for that gem in the weeks to come 😂) But as busy as we were, we were still able to squeeze in a very special event. Si distingue da altre imbarcazioni di pari misure per un piacevole living a prua, tranquillo e riservato durante l’ormeggio in banchina. L’area di poppa è molto comoda per i suoi grandi spazi e per la presenza di un mobile bar con grill, frigo e icemaker. La spiaggetta poppiera scende sotto la superficie con un meccanismo elettro-idraulico. Il ponte superiore non è eccessivo nelle dimensioni e nemmeno nell’allestimento perché una barca di questa lunghezza è molto più stabile se le strutture sopraelevate sono leggere. In ogni caso si può pranzare o prendere il sole anche sul fly. I fianchi sono molto alti rispetto alla tuga e proteggono dalle onde. La falchetta elevata rende sicuri gli spostamenti anche con mare mosso. Nel salone troviamo una cucina accanto alla porta d’ingresso, un grandissimo living e la timoneria raccolta su un lato per ottimizzare lo spazio. Il design è contemporaneo, anzi un passo avanti. Sottocoperta ci sono tre cabine per sei ospiti e a poppa c’è il locale per il marinaio. L’armatoriale si trova a centro scafo, ha due armadi e un ampio volume di stivaggio sotto il letto. Nella cabina Vip spicca un elemento d’arredo che ci riporta al nome del modello: un baule. Per altri due ospiti c’è una cabina doppia sul fianco sinistro. La capacità dei serbatoi è in sintonia con la funzione di questo yacht: 3200 litri per il carburante e 700 litri per l’acqua. In sala macchine ci sono due motori Cummins QSC 8.3 da 500 cavalli ciascuno. Si tratta di unità turbodiesel con 6 cilindri in linea, 4 valvole per cilindro, alimentazione a iniezione elettronica Common Rail ad alta pressione rispondenti alle più recenti e restrittive normative sulle emissioni. A 7,2 nodi il Magellano 53 ha la massima efficienza, ogni motore consuma circa 5,7 litri/ora, quindi sono sufficienti 1,6 litri per miglio. E’ un valore eccellente. Azimut, però, ha pensato che le sue navette dovessero essere anche veloci e così ha progettato carene “dual mode”, cioè con doppia modalità di funzionamento. Se si spinge il gas su un trawler puro, di vecchia generazione, si aumenta la velocità solo di qualche nodo. It’s now home to two of the seven wonders of the ancient world. And for centuries, the Ottoman Empire was the preeminent power in the Mediterranean. The ability to change our backyard is something we absolutely love about the cruising life. In the still heat of the morning we wake up to the paradise that is our new backyard. The conditions are perfect so we decide water sports are in order and the entire crew hits the water for a wakeboard session. Things take a sad turn when it’s time for JaeCee to fly home, but it ends in laughter when she has an un-forseen encounter at the airport…. Still laughing about JaeCee and her interesting situation we decided to hoist the hook and venture out for some exploration and snorkeling at a place called Hospital Point where we find amazingly clear water, a cool drop off, and a beach all to ourselves. The biggest benefit to hanging around such a bespoke boat factory is the unfettered access to some of the world’s leading experts.  Because it seems there are new specialists coming in to collaborate on different boats every month. And lucky us, we managed to make friends with Erik Berzins while he was visiting the factory.  He is a Yacht designer and all-around incredible engineer at Morrelli & Melvin.  If you know who M&M is, then you already know they are regarded as some of the best designers in the world.  And wow, we learned heaps about all things sailing while carpooling to the factory and exploring on weekends together. He designs and manages a wide variety of projects including some very cutting-edge multihulls with mighty fancy appendages (daggerboards, foils, winglets, rudders).  And considering we wanted to make a video explaining why we choose NOT to get daggerboards…we knew he was just the person to help us break down exactly what all these different appendages do.
