The White Star Line's RMS Republic, launched on February 26th, 1903, sank after she collided with the SS Florida in a fog bank off Nantucket on January 24th, 1909. The disaster was the first time Marconi wireless was used to transmit a distress signal. The rescue was a major success, with only 6 people dying in the initial collision. With hardly any casualties, the Republic taught the shipping industry that modern ocean liners were virtually immune to major disasters. This confidence would ultimately prove deadly for RMS Titanic only 3 years later. You never know exactly how your neighbors boat is going to swing and you can't be certain you dropped the hook in the perfect spot. Toss in a tight space, some hard concrete and gusting wind and you really need to keep an eye out for danger. We thought it was worth sharing this video to help people see how crazy living on a dock (or quay) can be. If the weather turns sour, sailors typically have to return to their boats and be prepared for anything. Rarotonga is known for being a difficult place for sailors to visit...and this is why. Quand nous avons décidé de faire notre tour du monde en voilier, nous ne connaissions rien à la voile et aux bateaux. Nous avons tout de même passé un permis mer pour nous sentir plus en sécurité. Ensuite l’achat du voilier, sa préparation très rapide par manque de temps et hop, nous-voilà parti en tdm. La transat, nous l’avons fait en équipage réduit, seulement à deux. Pour une simple raison. Nous ne voulions pas prendre la responsabilité d’autres personnes au cas où quelque chose arriverait. Aucune transatlantique ne se ressemble. La nôtre a été assez agitée avec des vents forts, de la houle croisée, beaucoup de nuages et du roulis permanent. Une transat est très fatigante et comporte des risques. Tout peut tomber en panne à n’importe quel moment. C’est ce qui nous est arrivé. Moteur en panne et par conséquent, impossible de recharger les batteries. Il fallait barrer pendant deux jours jusqu’à ce que, grâce au téléphone satellite Iridium Go, on a pu nous donner la marche à suivre pour nous dépanner. Nous avons pu avoir un autre gros souci : panne de l’autopilote. Alors là, ça aurait été une catastrophe pendant une transat à l’équipage réduite. Par chance, l’autopilote est tombé en panne juste après la transat. La traversée de l’océan est une aventure et nous étions bien contents d’être arrivé sains et saufs.

Day 4 at Sea! Brian Is it easier or harder than you though sailing with a 6 month baby? - “Well we’re still alive and no one is going crazy, so I guess easier” :p After 3 days averaging 4 hours of sleep a night I was definitely starting to feel like I needed a solid NAP. Delos was making great speed flying along at 11 knots from time to time surfing down waves when we spotted the outline of an island just after sunrise. After a pit stop at the Island of Great Inagua to clear Bahamas immigration and customs we continue for another 24 hour sprint to arrive in the isolated Ragged Islands. Oh I was just soooo happy to set the hook in crystal clear water right next to a beautiful white sand beach!! Hope you liked this passage videos! So much fun to edit and so many great memories! Boating from the Florida Keys to the Bahamas in our Contender Boats Center Console in order to go fishing for Big Mahi Mahi and Yellowfin Tuna! We take you with us on our Bahamas fishing trip where we get into a tuna frenzy and get tight on a Giant Mahi Mahi. We start the day by heading to our local tackle shop to acquire live bait to do some live bait tuna fishing. Once we acquire bait, we cross over to our first Bahamian Island, Bimini. Boating to the Bahamas can be tricky so we take our time boating from Florida to the Bahamas but once you get there its an unimaginable feeling! Once we arrive in Bimini we check into the customs and head the boat north to do some Bahamas Yellowfin Tuna Fishing. We spend the day get sharked unfortunately but we eventually make it happen by catching a Blackfin tuna, Yellowfin Tuna & a Dolphin, Mahi Mahi, or Dorado. Boating can be dangerous in the dark therefor as the sun sinks we make our decision to head towards west end and end our day fishing for Mahi Mahi and Yellowfin tuna in the Bahamas. The next day we get and early start and cross the boat back over to the Florida Keys. Once we arrive back at our home we do a good ole Catch Clean and Cook, but not just any catch clean and cook... A Bahamas Catch Clean and Cook! Cut fish into bite-sized cubes. Set aside 2. Prepare the marinade by mixing the soy sauce, lemon juice, ginger, chili, garlic, and sea salt. 3. Mix the fish into the marinade, cover, and marinate for 15-20minutes. 4. In a large pan add oil, pour in the marinade and add the honey and sesame seeds. 5. Mix together until the sauce starts to bubble and gets thicker/saucier. 6. Add the fish and cook for a couple minutes on each side. 7. Take off the heat and garnish with more sesame seeds, spring onion, and red chili sauce. 8. Enjoy! From 2016 to 2020 I sailed single-handed around the world on 'Fathom', a Vancouver 28 pocket cruising boat after leaving my job, career and land life in my wake. My voyage was the adventure of a lifetime and I returned home to the UK 4 years and 3 months later. 37,200 nautical miles had passed under the keel in a solo circumnavigation via the Panama Canal and South Africa. This is my attempt at piecing together a 2-part film about my adventures in the Voyage of Fathom. ​I hope you enjoy watching. Part 1: In this first episode, I depart the Isle of Wight, UK, in May 2016 and sail south to the Cape Verde Islands before crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean. After transiting the Panama Canal I cross the Pacific Ocean in 2017 and the Indian Ocean the following year before arriving in South Africa in late 2018. My boat is called 'Fathom', an 8.5m Vancouver 28 built by Northshore in 1991. Long keeled, cutter rigged and with plenty of storage, she is the perfect pocket ocean cruiser. From swimming alongside dolphins and sharks to humpback whales and manta rays, perfect tradewind sailing to storms and breaking waves, trips on dugout canoes in the San Blas to Pirogues in Madagascar, there were plenty of unforgettable experiences. We can't get on the boat until we own the boat.. As soon as we own the boat we need to be OUT! This is definitely not the ideal situation. The engines haven't been run in years and we would have ideally spent a few days making sure all the systems worked before we took off on a 6-8 hour journey to the boat yard. Our boat almost SANK - NOW WHAT? | 83 | Beau and Brandy Sailing If you watched last week, we were rescued by two fishermen about 60 nautical miles of the coast of Grenada. After patching the crack with underwater epoxy that the fishermen passed us, we were able to stop the leak and finish our VERY SLOW sail to Grenada. We have some friends that help us get our boat hauled out in Clark’s Court Marina. While on the hard, Beau gets some professional advice on the best way to fix the crack. We have a week on the dry and we have a lot of work to do. After grinding and sanding, we find more cracks on the port side in the same place that we found the crack on the starboard side. We also take out the water tank because it is causing damage to the freeboard, so we will be installing a water bladder mid ship for the future. Days and night of sanding, grinding, laying fiberglass and more sanding, we are ready to get Saoirse back in the boat and see if she will FLOAT! "It's a Manatee!!! The first one I've seen!" Kazza shouts with excitement. We just arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida and wake up to a beautiful and calm morning. We decide to take Baby Nugs to the beach to eat some sand, and while hanging out Kazza spots a Manatee just off the beach. After playtime is over I troubleshoot our alternator on the trusty Volvo that mysteriously stopped working on the passage down the coast. I don't have any luck, and will have to order parts and finish that one up another day. Kazza decides to go shopping, leaving me in charge of Sierra for the afternoon which means we end up watching the police boat bust people, then head into the yacht club to eat some mud. Finally we sail Delos down to Ft. Lauderdale and go on the hunt for a dock space that can accomodate us which means shoving a paddle board inside my dad's Camry and heading out on a mission with our portable depth sounder. In this episode we sail into Siargao, Philippines, where we were told we could go to land to clear in, but the Mayor of the municipality had different ideas. She sends the coastguard to make sure we don't step on land, so we try a different angle, and attempt to clear into the city of Surigao, 40 miles away... SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world.
