We have talked with friends who have the Mastervolt and Balmar high-output alternators who are very happy with their set up too.  There are lots of new options out there, so look them all up to see which is best for your application.  No matter which brand, we're fans of the technology and think high-output alternators are a fantastic solution for boaters. UPDATE** We've been using this system since mid-December 2021 and it's now June 2022. So we're 6 months in and it's worked well. We haven't been able to get our tachometers working properly but other than that...the ability to pump in so much power to our battery bank while simply arriving at and leaving an anchorage is fantastic! We think high output alternators will be the norm vs a generator in the future. It's already becoming an option with some boat manufacturers. FYI, we were warned by friends with high output alternators that we would notice a slight drop in our overall speed. That's because power is being diverted to the batteries. For our setup, it seems to be about half a knot or so. For instance, if we motored with one engine at 1800 RPMs before we would travel at about 5 knots, now it's 4.5 knots. We've also worked out a couple of bugs that we talk about on our blog. Indonesia has a very long history when it comes to ocean travel. They've sailed far and wide for centuries now, fishing, trading and transporting goods. Sailing around Indonesia its hard to not notice the majestic looking Phinisi sailing ship, sometimes in a foggy anchorage you can imagine ancient times in these parts. The long beach at Tana Beru is where these wooden ships have been built since the 14th century and still to this day 40-50 are under construction at any one time. We spent a week anchored just offshore and I spent many hours wandering around the different sites, observing, asking questions and filming the work being done. The boats are built largely without plans, the knowledge being passed down from generation to generation. Some electric tools are used but the vast majority of the work is done manually. Incredible to witness these men going about their daily work. I absolutely loved our time spent in Beru We hope youll enjoy this video guys. Now some people will undoubtedly say something along the lines of missing the old boat which we of course do but its a bit like an ex-girlfriend kind of thing where your now really happy but don't want to make your ex feel bad by plastering how happy you are all over social media because thats a bit of a dick thing to do but its actually how you feel and therefore the truth which you shouldn't feel bad about or avoid but its a bit of a complicated situation and so you play it down a little but your still pretty stoked. Imagine taking your house into a harsh environment, shaking it around and dousing it with salt water. How much stuff would break? Then move your house hundreds of miles from the nearest hardware store and we find out just what it takes to maintain an offshore sailboat. After 1 week of hard labor the projects are coming along nicely, but there is still an endless list of that needs tackling. An upgraded lithium battery bank installed, refrigeration compressor and cold place replaced, and of course the damn toilet decided to back up in the yard and cause a disgusting mess and I'm forced deep into some really shitty work, LITERALLY!! We're in :) After hearing about a secret dive spot on the other side of Ascension Island we pull up the hook and take Delos out for an exploratory dive mission. We end up at a place called Bird Island by the locals, and for very good reason. Pretty soon we find ourselves anchored in one of the most incredibley beautiful places we have ever been.
