Sometimes life out here is a bit crazy. This was one of those nights. We had run out of options on where to anchor. Dusk was upon us and we had to pull over. Almost immediately after dark all these fishermen started fishing around us. Why here? Why now? It just didn't make sense. Well it didn't take long for them to come up to us. Turns out they were using underwater flashlights and an air compressor to shoot fish at night (not to mention dynamite to stun the fish). Four examples (and a blooper) under various conditions of how I dock my 40' Bavaria sailboat while solo. These occur in relatively light winds, but I use the same techniques (frequently) in 15-20 kts at my home port of La Rochelle, France (Les Minimes). Notice that in none of these examples do I use the bow-thruster. In reality, I use it more when departing (to help swing the bow at low speed in tight quarters) than on arrival.

TRIUMPH offers a host of luxurious amenities, including a touch and go helipad located on the bow that can be transformed into the ultimate lounging area, sauna, fully equipped gym, massage room, jacuzzi and the beach club of the Lower Deck proposes an area of 70 square meters with a drop-down platform and immediate access to the sea. The Sun Deck sits at the top the yacht on the sixth deck, not always present on yachts of this size. The crows nest features an elegant jacuzzi, comfortable seating and a table for Six that can be used even while navigating, thanks to ample wind sheltering. The aft cockpit on the Main Deck is an outdoor spot, sheltered yet in contact with the environment, perfect for conversation and relaxation at any time of day. Amidships, the large and bright living area, consisting of a dining and relaxation space, is complete with every comfort. Green & Mingarelli Design arranged the elegant interiors and many furnishing details, closely following the direction of the Benetti Interior Style Department. All the artwork onboard is created by renowned British photographer David Yarrow. The sky lounge on the Upper Deck blends seamlessly with the welcoming aft outdoor spaces, outfitted with Indian Ocean custom furniture. TRIUMPH accommodates twelve guests in six sumptuous staterooms. The owner’s apartment, set over a sprawling 130 square meter area, takes full advantage of the deck’s spaciousness and stunning views. Also on the Main Deck, a large VIP stateroom considered as the second master dedicates an opulent suite to the guests. The sleeping area amidships includes two double cabins and two twin cabins with pullmans for an additional eight guests. The engine room hosts a pair of MTU 12V 4000 M53 engines for a maximum speed of 16.5 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots. TRIUMPH’s range at 12 knots is an impressive 4,700 miles. Unfortunately, mishaps like this are not a very rare occurrence in the BVI's... this was just an extreme case and we happened to have the camera running from the onset. Still amazes me how many of these bareboat captains are completely unqualified to operate these vessels, yet the bareboat companies keep renting them out without proper screening... and this one damaged 6 boats in 45 minutes, 4 of them private vessels like ours. Delos feels like a dog let off her leash on the open ocean! With all our projects complete we hoist sail and set sail for the Florida Keys. Nothing feels better than crossing that last project off your list, stocking the boat with provisions, and heading out to sea. We set off for the first of the Florida Keys, Key Biscayne. Upon entering the pass we see a number of dilapidated structures built on stilts. It turns out this is called Stiltsville and people will do just about anything to gamble and drink out of the eyes of the authorities. After exploring the history of Stiltsville we get invited to go dive the USS Spiegel Grove, a 500 foot Korean War era landing craft docking ship that was sunk as an artificial reef. Diving on nitrox we have an amazing dive and get back into the groove of breathing underwater. Soon enough it's time to head south, closer to our final destination in the Keys- The Dry Tortugas!
