It feels like everything lately has been one step forward, two steps back, including one of our most challenging projects of the haulout: Replacing our furler motor. As difficult as it was though, I really enjoy projects like this that involve a lot of creativity. A lot of stars had to align to make this one happen including tracking down a retired Swiss guy who used to make the original parts and getting him to dig them up from his basement and send them to me 😂 and I'm super happy with how it all turned out in the end. We had a lot of victories in the yard, but lots of set backs as well, and as is usually the case with boat projects everything was taking longer than we had hoped for. So with the clock ticking we decided to bust out the big guns, and we welcomed Super Ryan back to save the day. We were exploring the beautiful beaches and water of the exuma island chain of the Bahamas and Amanda looked absolutely stunnin in her red bikini. Unfortunately we received some bad new, Amanda's mother had a medical emergency so we had to get up early to sail to Staniel Cay so that Amanda could get a flight home. This episode I visit Chris Rees, a very experienced boatbuilder who was behind various impressive projects including the enormous 3-masted lugger Greyhound and the replica fishing lugger Spirit of Mystery (which was sailed from the UK to Australia by Pete Goss as a tribute to the fishermen who undertook the same trip in the 1850s). He shows me around the boat that he is currently working on - a 1905 Pilot Cutter named Letty - and also tells me a little about how he became a boatbuilder. Finally we look at another boat that Chris is hoping to bring back to life - a historic local ferry, which up until recently was apparently the longest continuously running ferry in the country. Originally a Steam powered vessel, it was later modified with a diesel engine, but Chris is hoping to equip it with an Electric motor for the next period of service. Imagine that you live on a sailboat, work on a sailboat, and travel on a sailboat. Then you have a baby.... We were extremely nervous setting out on our first sail with The Nugget. How would she react? Would she like it or would it be a total disaster? Do we need to rethink our lifestyle and future plans? Well there's only one way to find out! With clear skies and what they call "reinforced trades" blowing 25-30 knots we set out straight into it tacking and beating into the swells. It was one hell of a bumpy ride..... We continued sailing westward through the Society Islands. In peaceful Taha'a we rode the tidal currents over a beautiful coral reef. A perfect crossing under full sail brought us to Bora Bora, where we swam with sharks and rays before climbing the central mountain to take in the spectacular views of the island and it's barrier reef. As the days on our traveler's visa became scarce, we checked out of French Polynesia and watched the weather for a big ocean passage, to the far end of the Pacific. Our boat Julia is a classic wooden sailboat, built in 1960 in British Columbia to the Ingrid design by William Atkin. She may be a vintage classic boat, but she is still a great blue water cruising vessel, out enjoying the world's oceans.
