Mother Nature rules our lives, and sometimes she can be a shifty old gal. Because of this, we watch the forecast like hawks, but local weather can be challenging to predict, and so our stunning new anchorage was short lived. Last week we found ourselves picking our jaws up off the floor at the beautiful coastline the morning after our first overnight sail complete with a couple dolphins viewed from our new found bow seat. The next day however we awoke to an unpredicted shift from NE to NW winds and rapidly deteriorating anchorage conditions. We tried muscling through a day of work, but with the new forecast update now showing the wind building and shifting even more against our favor, we decided to abandon the area entirely. Thankfully the boat sharing the anchorage agreed and has a track that can lead us to their previous anchorage, that would offer much better protection. The catch? It’s 22 miles in the direction the wind is coming from, it’s supposedly blowing 30 knots out there, and it’s 6pm so the sun is setting. If Courage wasn’t here (yes their boats name is Courage how ironic) I’m not sure what we would have done that evening because the prospect of entering an unknown anchorage alone at night in these conditions didn’t sit well with us. Our good friends the dolphins came out to reassure us that we made the correct decision as we were leaving the anchorage and with the game plan to motor sail a couple miles north and then bare off for a better sailing angle, we were feeling confident in our decision. We pay a visit to the hospital to stitch Riley back up after he fell down a hatch, immediately after running our boat aground. The Turks and Caicos is considered world class diving and now Riley isn't allowed to swim for at least a week. It's going to kill the poor boy. Join us and our Australian family as we set off to explore what these pristine islands have to offer 🌊⛵️🌞. Congratulations to our lovely patrons Harald Schmelzer and Alexis Atkinson! Iva W. is a custom refitted and restored 1929 Chesapeake Bay Buyboat. She started her life shorter vertically, and as a workboat hauling crabs and oysters in the bay. In 1998, the IVA W was converted from her original low-slung, efficient workboat into a floating Bed & Breakfast. The original pilothouse was lifted off the hull, and a new galley level was added, before the pilothouse was installed above, and forward of her original position. The original, sleeping quarters / galley which was directly aft of the pilot house, was extended to create a larger space. After 6 years of modification, followed by 2 years In Florida, she returned home to the Chesapeake Bay, where she spent the next 4 years idle, and falling into disrepair. In January 2010, the Current Owner stumbled across a Craigslist listing for a vintage buyboat in need of serious attention and repairs. His first Impression upon seeing her, was that it would simply be too much work, too many dollars, and would require a skillset way above that which he possessed. But then he began to see the potential, and within 2 months, he was starting work on her. Over the years, she has been completely refit, and outfitted to make her the most comfortable boat possible. The systems the current owners have implemented have been designed to make her operable by a single sailor. Every comfort has been added to ensure that when their family is on board, it is an amazing experience. All systems have been replaced, A/C and heat have been added throughout, and she is quite easy to operate. She has been completely restored to the highest standards of comfort and safety, while maintaining the integrity of her honorable past. The current owners recognize they are merely the latest in a very short line of stewards who have had the privilege and honor of working her, enjoying her, sharing her, and most importantly, protecting her. This week we're gonna start the real transformation of our SAILBOAT! Time to sand out the painting and to finish all the welds! Duca took some TIG welding classes!! If you are new here... we are a Brazilian couple that have just bought a 44ft hot galvanized steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) and is on the mission of bringing her back to life after 22 years abandoned on the hard. Once we are done, the plan is to sail her to our home town Florianópolis so we can finish building our land base, a Tiny Shipping Container House that we are building ourselves without any prior experience. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We thought it was worth doing a standalone blog just on this because it was quite serious and there was a lot to learn from it. We are involved in a genuine rescue at sea while on a Greek ferry between Athen and Aegina. About half way along our journey we realized that there was a person in the water. The first thing we did was point and someone alerted the captain. As we got closer we realized that it was a woman. It was a major shipping channel so we presumed she'd come off a large ship. She was able to swim over to a lifeline thrown to her, as the crew lowered a rope ladder.. but it didn't reach the water. One of the crew members climbed down and tried to help her, but she just didn't have the energy or strength to get on the lopwer rung as it was too high. Worse still, the boat was lifting up and down on the swell and she was getting sucked under the hull. A high-speed boat arrived to provide assistance but this too had high sides and the swell made it impossible to approach her. Eventually they lowered a ramp at the back of the ferry and a crew member jumped in and pulled her around to it. Other crew members managed to pull her onto the ramp but it was difficult as the ferry was still going up and down with a swell and it took them all their strength to pull her onto it. I didn't know if anyone was able to do first aid so I remained close by just in case they needed any assistance. Thankfully, she was conscious, breathing and able to talk so they put her into a recovery position, but I was still concerned her condition might deteriorate after the rescue as it sometimes does. The woman was finally transferred to the red high-speed power boat that had been standing by. I think their plan was to transfer her to the Coast Guard boat but they probably decided it was unsafe because of the swell. Once the woman was transferred we continued on our journey. So we don't actually know what happened to the woman afterwards but we obviously hope she was okay, We couldn't find any information and there was nothing in the English language media. It was quite troubling to see someone like that in water but we learned a lot from the experience, particularly how difficult it is to get someone back onto a boat. The ferry was a very large boat but it would be difficult on any boat really. I've learned a lot from years of training with the RNLI, RYA and our own drills on the boat but to actually to see how long the woman was in the water before they managed to get her back on board and also to see how someone had to put their own life at risk, was quite worrying really. This has also made us reevaluate the equipment that we have or don't have on our boat for recovering an MOBs - what kind of hoist we need, where on the boat we could bring someone up and even if they were conscious they might not even have the energy to climb up a ladder. So we're sorry if this blog was a little bit serious but we wanted to share it hoping that it would be a valuable learning experience for everyone.
