Our shakedown cruise on Little Nutshell finally begins as we leave Shotley Marina and head out for our first night aboard. What starts as a simple system check quickly turns into a crooked night on the hard, a muddy hull clean and a whole lot of learning. Join us for boat maintenance, marina mishaps and the real start of our cruising adventure. Magnus installs the battery monitor on the dash and tidies up the electrical cables underneath before we cast off. We finally leave Shotley Marina and begin the first day of our shakedown cruise on Little Nutshell. The plan is to anchor out for the night and check her systems. We head into Tichmarsh Marina to visit the chandlery, as the harbour master has kindly let us pull up alongside. Then it’s out again and onto a mooring for the night, although we still don’t get to test our anchor. We check out the scrubbing poles at the marina, where we plan to head in the early hours of the morning to inspect Little Nutshell’s hull and give her a good clean so we can work out whether she needs antifouling or new anodes. Our calculations aren’t quite right and we end up sitting on the very end of the concrete footings for the scrubbing poles. It’s a crooked night from then on. We check her bottom and she’s in good nick. There aren’t too many barnacles on the hull, but the propeller is smothered in them. Magnus is a real gentleman and does the majority – actually, all – of the cleaning and scrubbing. It’s muddy, slippery and not the most pleasant job. Juicing almonds?! Yes. We used to blend our almonds with water, but for the past few years we juice them. I choose to juice versus blend primarily because I have a bullet blender still that just won't allow for the volume I need. However, I have fallen in love with juicing my almonds because it allows me to see the consistency of the "juice" that comes out- how thick it is versus thin with the water. I feel like I save so much money now that I am able to see how much water I can add as I am making it. When Shane and I were interested in jumping on the juicing train a few years ago we did a lot of research on what juicer to get. A big decision when it came to the juicer was almond milk. This is the video that partly helped us decide what juicer to get - John from Discount Juicers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBMQu_zJJ0Q The juicer we use is a Breville BJS600XL Fountain Crush Masticating Slow Juicer. That juicer is no longer available on Amazon, however this is a juicer that's very similar that crushes versus cuts and is a tall stand versus horizontal http://amzn.to/2xZ4m2s (affiliate). We bought it three years ago from Amazon and have used it almost every other day since then. It still works great. A couple things to note - incase almond milk making is new to you - be sure to soak your almonds in water overnight (or 8-12 hours). Rinse them when done. The almond pulp that comes out of the juicer and in your nut milk bag can be dried in the oven at the lowest heat you can get on it for a couple hours. Store it in the fridge and use it for almond meal and flour recipes. If you're in need of a nut milk bag you can use a simple tea towel you might even have in your drawer. This is a nut milk bag I used a couple years ago at Whole Foods. I had to modify it and then I hand wash it and hang to dry after every use. When I used to use tea towels I would just throw them in the wash after each use. The nut milk keeps for a couple days in the fridge (which for our household is basically what it takes to drink it).
