With nothing but open ocean from the bottom of Australia/New Zealand to Antartica; 1,000nm to the south, the ocean swell can build in height with no land to stop it for more than 2,500nm until it hits the shores of the Pacific Islands. There many reasons why more people have climbed Mount Everest than have sailed across the Tasman Sea and the rapidly changing nature of the Tasman Sea's weather system is one of them. I have crossed the Tasman Sea five times (two solo) on Ocean Gem, the keys to success include waiting for the weather window, downloading live weather en-route and sailing a vessel thats easy to mode for all wind and swell conditions. Despite its reputation for extreme conditions, the Tasman Sea is easy to cross safely if you stay clear of the winter storm season (late May to August) and wait for a safe weather window. It’s an absolute bucket-list voyage and a hugely satisfying personal achievement. We'll depart Picton and spend the first 12-16 hours getting clear of the South Island Coast, before setting a NW course toward Southport on Queensland's Gold Coast. West Coast Multihulls partnered with Denison Yachting to host the 2019 Catalina Rendezvous. The event kicked off with a Thursday night meet-and-greet on the back deck of the Harbor Reef restaurant. Friday started with a dinghy raft-up pancake breakfast off the back of Flite Deck. The day finished with a Oscar themed party at Harbor Sands. On Saturday, the catamarans had a rally to the back side of the island and rafted up in Catalina Harbor for social hour boat hop. This 6 night, 7 night or 10 night liveaboard adventure takes you to the Southern Visayas region, which boasts some of the best diving in the Philippines. There is a huge diversity of marine life, muck diving hotspots, gentle sloping reefs and steep coral covered walls. During this trip you will visit and dive the islands of Cabilao, Cebu, Balicasag and Pescador; along with Apo Island marine sanctuary and macro hot spot Dauin. This itinerary not only offers amazing macro opportunities and the chance to see big schools of fish, but also the possibility of some larger pelagic encounters. Thresher sharks come in to Pescador Island to feed on schools of sardines and whale sharks can be seen year round at Oslob. Underwater the topography of dive sites varies from shallow sandy fringing reefs to steep walls dotted with seafans and sponges, whilst a couple of small plane wrecks and cars have formed artificial reefs. Marine life is diverse however common sightings include green and hawksbill turtles and schools of barracuda and jacks, whilst redtooth trigger fish, pyramid butterfly fish and blue lined fusileers are seen on almost each dive in huge numbers. Smaller creatures such as frogfish, ghost pipefish, octopus and pygmy seahorses are found at several of the dive sites and of course a wide range of nudibranchs, shrimps and crabs can be found on each reef. In this episode Saoirse has left Belitung and we unsuccessfully dodge some stormy weather on our way down to the volcano Krakatoa in Indonesia's Sunda Strait. Along the way while sailing at night with the centreboards down, we encounter an unlit fishing apparatus that breaks the shear pins on the centreboards causing them to retract, as designed to prevent damage. Initial attempts to replace the shear pins were unsuccessful...keep following to find the fix. While parked at Krakatoa we did a little day hike at the volcano, getting some sweet views. Jeannine is surprised by a large fish that knocked itself out trying to jump into the boat. And we eventually land at Sumatra's west coast harbour of Bengkulu. Thanks for following!
