We’ve anxiously been waiting to leave the marina in Fort Lauderdale that we’ve called home for the past two months and the time has finally come! After the boat work and minor set backs, we head south to Dinner Key in Biscayne Bay (the further south, the better for our crossing to The Bahamas). We encountered a lot of firsts on the short trip - first time maneuvering summer friday out of our narrow marina, first visit to a fuel dock, first dolphin sighting and first seasick cat 🙁. With our children leaving the nest soon, we have a goal to become live-aboard world cruisers. We've never been able to make a lot of money, and of course parenting takes up most of our time. And as we know, sailing is a rich persons game. As always, that's not the case. There are many out there sailing on a budget. Well, here comes another couple doing the same thing. It starts with a sailboat. Learning to sail, working on the vessel, upgrading it to play around with the engineering of making the boat self-sustainable...and of course, family trips and plenty of sailing! We will be out learning the ropes, so to speak. In a few years, we will be selling SV Yemoja and upgrading to a larger sized boat: refitting for sustainable/cruiser/live-aboard/blue water capabilities, and sail the world. It's going to be an uphill battle to achieve our paradise, but we are willing to head "Windward" to get to our "Eden." We are raw, and not pro editors...but we hope you enjoy the channel! Och för att göra det möjligt för fler att upptäcka Åkulla året om, så har vi på Varbergs Sparbank ända sedan 1930-talet varit en del av utvecklingen för att skapa Västsveriges främsta anläggningar för vintersport. 🚂 1911 drogs järnvägen igenom Åkulla och framtidstron var på topp! Detta gjorde att vanligt folk kunde komma ut hit betydligt enklare och i samband med detta blev Åkulla ett väldigt populärt utflyktsmål. 🧡 1930 invigs Åkulla vintersportspalats följt av milda och snöfattiga vintrar vilket gjorde att ekonomin försämrades. 1934 ger vi på Varbergs Sparbank vårt första ekonomiska bidrag på 100 kr och påföljande år med 300 kr vilket blev viktiga tillskott till verksamheten i bistra tider. 🧡 Idag är det Åkulla skidallians/Åkulla Skidspår som på ett väldigt engagerat sätt utvecklar anläggningen och vi är både en stolt sponsor och fortsatt bidragsgivare. Totalt har vi satsat 11 miljoner på bland annat en ny konstsnöanläggning, låneutrustningar för barn och ungdomar, ett nytt servicehus och en sprillans ny värmestuga för allmänheten som invigs nu hösten 2021.

In which we transit the infamous Hell Gate to Liberty Marina in NJ in the middle of the night. The entire passage took about 5 hours from Manhasset Bay to the slip at Liberty. We needed to go at 2am because the best time to transit with the current in your favor is to start at Throgs Neck at slack ebb tide (and we didn't want to wait another 12 hours for the next one). We were doing 12 kn at one point. It was exhilarating! Ladybug is a 1976 Bristol 34. I mostly use a Pixel 3 to shoot my videos and I edit in Adobe Premiere. Strangford Lough Yacht Club once again hosted the season ending Frosties Regatta on the picturesque shores of upper Strangford Lough. There were 5 yachts entered in this years IRC 1 regatta, which was down on last year due to the continue impact COVID is having on getting crews together. The racing in this years Frosties Regatta was as close as ever. In the IRC 1 class racing was so extremely tight with boats boats regularly finishing within seconds of each other and the overall series result getting decided on count back when the top two yachts could not be seperated. GTR was back to defend their Frosties title, they were however expecting close competition from two other local boats, HiJacker and Le Basculer. The Regatta was held out of SLYC over 5 weekends with 10 races in total. The series was a classic with 3 different race winners and 3 boats that could still take the title coming into the last day for racing. John Heasman is an old friend of RCSSC member Eric Andrew and we all met up recently on a chance sail on a bright and breezy day - you may have seen the recent video on this channel. I asked John if he would like to tell us about his boat and provide a few more photos - these are his words. "My boat, 'Cerafina', is a Swale Pilot, a Gaff Cutter, built ( circa 2003 ) by John Pollitt of JEP Marine, on the Swale in Kent, a tide channel between the Isle of Sheppey and Kent. She is 5m boat length, 6m with bow sprit, with a 1.89m beam. An easy to use trailer sailer. Her hull design is taken from an old rowing lifeboat off a decommissioned Welsh lightship. A mould was made of the lifeboat hull, which John Pollitt bought. He then designed and converted the hull into a beautiful gaff cutter. They are clinker look, grip hulls, with cream internals and mahogany gunwales and seats. Sadly they are no longer manufactured. Quite a few were built in the late 1990’s through to 2008 / 10. In 2020 there were three Swale Pilots based at RSC. Two have since sadly moved with their owners. Cerafina is currently the only one now left at the club. They do come up for sale fairly infrequently, one or two every couple of years, if you watch the usual boat sale websites. Cracking gaffer boat to sail, with the challenges of multiple sails, including a topsail.." Thank John and hope to see you out on the water again soon.
