Hey, when the Melges 32 class signed on for sailing their World Championship on San Francisco Bay, what did they expect? Big Breeze!!! Thirty Two boats showed up on the starting line for a ten race series over four days. Everyone got what they expected. Two days where they sailed three races in winds that topped out over twenty knots and two days where they only needed to sail two races. To say the teams were tired each evening would be an understatement. Any one of the top eight boats could have won this competition. There were the stalwarts of the class, teams like STAR and Red as well as a large number of teams with long pedigrees in other, larger, one design classes like Warpath, Goombay Smash and Samba Pa Ti. Skill, luck and just being in the right spot helped decide the winner as 8 different teams took at least one first place finish.

We took off from Thailand, Krabi boat lagoon. It was a bitter sweet leaving friends we made during 2 years. Winds did not look great, but we had not many options after our visa ended and we checked out of Thailand. But the uncooperating winds, raising tides, what means current against us and countless fisherman boats with nets forced us to stop in Nai Harn - most southern bay of Phuket. Next day we left again. Crossing the Mediterranean on a sailboat from Malta to Spain: 900 nautical miles in 6 days! The weather conditions were absolutely perfect for an East to West sailing passage at sea, with downwind all the way. Although we had to motor the first day, the rest of the passage was for the most part as glorious as it was uneventful. On the 5th day, I burned my leg while making coffee, and we considered re-routing the boat to get me to a hospital. But all things considered, we were fairly well equipped to deal with the injury until we’d arrived at destination, and we continued to Almerimar. Welcome to the yard, and one of the first project of our season prep! Ryan wanted to change the cutlass bearing, which was due for a replacement after 13 years of good and loyal services. Since replacing the cutlass bearing involved removing the prop shaft, this seemed to be a good opportunity to also change the stern seal and learn how to align the prop shaft to the engine. So what was I thinking when I installed an LG home-style mini-split air conditioning unit on a SAILBOAT? Well, I was thinking it was a good practical alternative to a marine air conditioning unit at a fraction of the cost! When we needed to bring the temperature down inside 'SOPHISTICATED LADY' during our engine transplant, it fit the bill perfectly and worked so well in fact, that we are still using it! There are many ways to improve your comfort level onboard a small sailboat, and I have been exploring many of them including air conditioning in order to show what is possible in a small living space while making it almost completely self-sustainable off-grid. The Tiny Home revolution is real and growing fast, and with it comes some of the newest and best technologies ever available to increase self-reliant electrical systems using solar generators, solar panels, wind turbines, and more to power all the devices we want to utilize.. so stay tuned because I have some very interesting content coming up for you this season! We finally bought a boat!! - Dufour 455 Grand Large - dream boat! In this weeks episode we are finally buying a boat! We bought a boat! First we enjoy crabs with Eddy and Hilde at their summer house outside of Oslo before we fly to Barcelona, get a rental car and drive to Valencia for sailboat shopping. There we are looking at a Dufour 455 Grand Large from 2007 named Windbreaker from Bergen which is about to become Mermaid of Oslo. We go for a test sail and sign the contract after test sailing! My new home on the water as a liveaboard sailing youtuber with my own youtube sailing channel We had backup plans to see more boats, but we skipped these plans and spent a lovely day on the beach of Peniscola (funny name) on our way back before we end up on the lovely B-Hotel in Barcelona with a rooftop pool! The Cuban coastguard doesn't have a boat. One sailor we spoke to here was told that if he wanted his boat pulled off the rocks they would have to hire a boat from Jamaica. So, this is not the place to find yourself hard aground! Added to that, we can 't get spares here. When we ran aground the hydraulics took that moment to blow a pipe so we have no bow thruster nor windlass to help. Two things that would have been handy to extract us from the bar we are firmly beached on. We try various ways of extracting ourselves, including kedging off, using our new electric eWincher. We really are on our own as we haven't seen another boat in a week. Cuba is an amazing place! Catamaran Sailing has been a real revelation. As with everything boat life, there are ups and downs. Catamaran sailing is also showing some advantages as well as disadvantages compared to our monohull. However overall, the serenity of this life is what is such a draw for us.
