Plywood is just one of those materials everyone uses on their boat. In this video I will show you the proper way to do a fiberglass layup. Using some MDO I had in the shop, and is my preferred plywood for any boat project. Its light and once sealed semi waterproof (road signs and billboards were made from MDO) Fiberglassing plywood is a lot easier than you think!! And this technique applies to all fiberglass repair, or your own boat restoration project. This type of repair can be applied to transom repair, or to replace the stringers on your boat. Even fiberglassing the bulkheads in your boat, really anytime you need to fiberglass a 90 degree angle. You will need some 1708 fiberglass and some chop strand matting to do this layup. It is crucial that you round over the top edge. Fiberglass does not like to bend at 90 degree angles. I really prefer to use a structural repair putty like total boats or hull and deck because I don't have to mess around with silica, which is very toxic to our lungs. If your using laminating polyester resin make sure you cure it with gelcoat, please don't use the PVA. I explain why in this video! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We do an extended sea trial aboard our new Enksail Orion 49 aluminum sailboat, Distant Shores IV. Sailing from Makkum in the Netherlands, we do an overnight crossing of the North Sea, dodging gas works, oil platforms and shipping lanes, then deal with shoals and big tides on the East Coast of the UK when we make landfall at Hull.

Often, I get told that I always seem so calm...and usually I am...But not so much in this week's episode. You get to see my highly annoyed and frustrated side. I had been waiting for nearly two weeks for my engine to get released from customs, only to be told that they had entered the wrong info and that it would take another two, possibly four days... Being towed sideways through an anchorage, nearly hitting the breakwaters of a marina on the way and then being told that maybe the haul out won't be happening did not help in the situation...so poor Tito got yelled at on the phone and Daniel had to beep out most of my talking of this episode. This episode was supposed to be called "the scariest haul out ever", but when we looked at the preview, we noticed that the haul out did not seem half as scary on video as it really was, and that maybe something else was more prominent throughout the video: my swearing...hence we renamed the episode. In August of 2017 we sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. The survey is the most important aspect of every trawler transaction. It demands an inspection of the vessel both in and out of the water. A day (or two) is spent testing and demonstrating onboard equipment so the professional surveyors can assess and share their opinion on condition, suitability, and market value. In order to obtain your boat loan and/or insurance coverage, you will need a “pre-purchase survey”. JMYS always recommend that our buyers have a diesel inspector in addition to a credentialed surveyor. Coordinating the underway demonstration (sea trial), haul out and dockside inspections is a balancing act of people, places, dates and timing. Buyers have a lot to learn in a short period of time and seller’s want to show their boat is ship shape. When the day arrives, it’s best to have a sense of what to expect as it can feel overwhelming. If you haven’t sold or purchased a boat, there is a good chance you aren’t aware of all that goes on during the hustle and bustle of a survey day. The boat quickly becomes crowded with different professionals moving about to complete their various tasks, and the current and future owners, along with their respective brokers, are onboard as well to oversee the survey and ask questions along the way. Jeff is a seasoned survey participant, often involved in two or more each month – traveling all over the country. He has attended hundreds of surveys and he loves knowing that he will learn something new each time, it’s part of what drives him to make sure his clients, be they buyers and/or sellers, get the most out of this intense experience. This video focuses on the sea trial, haul out and survey of Partida, a 1991 Nordhavn 46. She was evaluated in Baja Naval, Ensenada, Mexico. Partida had a comprehensive examination during the haul out and underway demonstration. The team hired by the buyers to do the inspections are shown doing their thing. The day wraps up with the all-important “findings” in with diesel mechanic, Phillip Jones and hull surveyor Kells Christian.
