Nudibranchs and flatworms, disguised invertebrates and cryptic fishes—you don't need to travel far in a kelp forest to find ridiculous critters hiding in plain sight. Dive into a critter hunt exploring three meters square in the classic Monterey Bay rocky reef of North Monastery Beach, and discover a sample of the abundance of life along the Central California coast. Backstory: About two weeks ago, my buddy Thomas and I somehow got the bug for some macro-video; we knew then that a critter hunt was in store. What’s a “critter hunt”? Well, I’m not sure the exact rules but generally speaking: ‘Tis a dive focused around finding discrete, individual animals that are usually small and/or hidden and/or “rare”—effectively, the Easter eggs in the “background” as you swim by; the countless incredible beasties on a scale that is too easily invisible unless you plop yourself down in one spot and soak it all in. Now, each diver will tend to see their own kind of critter, depending on what they’re focused on, and what kind of gear they brought. I didn’t have my macro lens this day, so most things here are about two inches and smaller on the critter side. On this dive, Thomas and I explored a patch of about three boulders that were about three square meters of area in total, and this is the better stuff of what I managed to film in about 80 minutes. Not labeled are tube snails or bryozoans or tunicates or sponges or worms that I wasn’t specifically targeting—too common or conspicuous for my critter hunting sense that day; though on a different day critters they 100% would be. A circular walk through Crinan wood, known as Scotland's rainforest, and back along the Crinan Canal. We had a detour at the start of the walk due to the ongoing canal repair work, and so haven't captured the start as we were a little off piste! Located on the island of Sicily, the street market in Catania is a bustling hub! We made a 1.5 minute video while walking on this foodmarket. You are immediately immersed in the cacophony of sounds: merchants loudly promoting their merchandise, fish being chopped into pieces, a scooter starting up, a wooden bench being dragged, blocks of ice that are thrown to the ground! And your nose also joins in, with the smell of fish or roasted nuts. Often known as 'La Pescheria', this market is not only a place where locals do their daily shopping, but also an example of Sicilian tradition and hospitality. I particularly enjoy looking at the stalls: shiny silver fish, real red meat, vegetables and fruit in all colors of the rainbow. And unique Sicilian delicacies such as caponata, arancini, and cannoli. It is nice when you watch to video to discover the sometimes beautiful Baroque architecture of Catania in the old streets. I think this is the essence of Sicily: lively, hospitable, social, unpolished and messy, a cheerful gathering of people who move relaxed and wonderfully smoothly with and next to each other.

In this episode, we do a quick walk thru of Keeldragger after her standing rigging has been pulled. This is the first phase of the new standing rigging replacement project and electronics upgrade!

We work on finding a place to drop our anchor in the anchorage near some buddy boat friends. We struggle with getting anchor down and set but that would prove to be the easy part of our first overnight on anchor. Overnight and early morning taught us alot about power and anchoring. So after 1 night we have to retreat back to the Marina for more repairs. Watch to the end to find out all of our issues. We leave Emae and day sail to Revolieu Bay on Epi Island. We are greeted on the beach by a friendly group of kids helping us drag our tender up, before heading into the village to meet the chief. After exchanging goods, we are welcomed to their village and community. Diving the reef we find a few painted crayfish and spectacular swim throughs. We meet Willy who shows us around his farm and the produce he grows, giving us some pomellos and a soursop which we had never eaten, before taking us through another nearby village. After a day of rest, Day 4 was rich in adrenaline-fueled battles in all classes. The day ended with the Final Prize Giving, where SW 108 Gelliceaux was crowned the winner of the Corinthian Spirit Class!
