Crossing from the Azores to the Isles of Scilly this August (2012) we encountered three storms. Filming during the storms wasn't practical, the worst of each was at night anyway and it was very scary in the pitch black with 50 knots plus of wind and driving rain. When the wind was at its worst I had to hand steer throughout. This video was taken after one of the storms when the waves subsided enough for the autopilot to cope whilst I filmed. We ran before the wind with just the staysail throughout the storms and for some days afterwards. Check out my books and e-books - search for Malcolm Snook on Amazon

After debating whether to head to Catalina Island in the rain, we decide to go for it. We learn a few lessons crossing the shipping lanes. Once at Avalon, we decided to return after a brief rest. A small craft advisory was scheduled for the next morning. Rather than get rained on and have an unpleasant return, we decided to take an evening passage back to Dana Point.

Buen velero.

Our passion is Sailing and the Sea, we bought Royal Atenea with the intention to start cruising around the world after spending all our lives working hard at sea. After we bought this beauty we found that it needed some love and care as it was abandoned by the previous owners so we are taking our time to bring her back to life. Eventually around the world trip will commence when the boat is fully upgraded for crossing the oceans and other continents. We are also working on the Electric Conversion of the first Jongert. About the Boat ''SY ROYAL ATENEA'' was built in Holland in 1973. Her original name was ''Antares''.She is a Jongert Trewes Design with 5mm Steel Hull and rigged as a Ketch with Aluminium Masts. Her LOA is 19.3m and she has a beam of 4.6m with a draft of 2.98m She weighs 33t and she can cruise at 7 kts with the engine and 8-10 kts on sail depending on the wind. She is fairly comfortable with 15 to 20 kts of wind. Freshwater capacity to last over 2 weeks and a fuel range of 13 days steaming. Keywords: Sailing Northern Europe, Sailing North Atlantic, Sailing the English Channel, Sailing through Alderney Race, Electrical failure on sailboat, near collision at sea, strong current. In the previous episode we had to turn back due to an electrical failure in this episode Anders will explain what happened. We could finally cast the lines and start our passage towards Brest but in Alderney Race we almost collided with something unexpected. In the end of the video we also tell you a little about our back story why we decided to go sailing and what our real goal are. We are a middle aged couple that has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our boat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. The sailing in our home water the Baltic Sea is part of our preparation to sail to the Mediterranean Sea. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boat and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders a 4 years ago. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 3 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. Litza is a Devon Rex cat and she is the real cattain aboard. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea.

Full test in Multihulls World #181: https://www.multihulls-world.com/review/motor/pinball-a-catamaran-equipped-with-very-innovative-propulsion A compact catamaran (only 9 m) equipped with hybrid diesel electric propulsion, this is how the Pinball is presented, previewed at the Grand Pavois La Rochelle 2021. The designers of this platform, developed in the region of the Arcachon basin in southwestern France, chose to use a catamaran configuration so as to offer a deck area 45% larger than that of a monohull. However, the beam is in line with that of a “modern” monohull – 9’8” (2.95 m) in width with a hull length of 27’4” (8.33 m). The aim is of course to use the same size marina slip. The manufacturer has developed an original hybrid drivetrain: one central diesel engine of 265 HP and two electric motors of 8 kW each, with ducted propellers. At 4 knots, the range in electric mode is two hours. In the internal combustion mode, it is possible to set the electric motors going, but this time using alternator power. The deck plan, which includes a tilting platform, has been optimized for ease of use, comfort and storage. The sundeck folds up to form a mini-cabin for two, VW Combi style. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Builder: Pinball Boat Length: 29’6” (9.00 m) Beam: 9’8” (2.95 m) Displacement: 7,720 lbs (3,500 kg) Draft: 2’3” (0.69 m) Drivetrain: 265 HP and 2 x 8 kW Max speed: 25 knots under engine, 6 knots under electric motors Fuel: 75 US gal (285 l) Water: 35 US gal (135 l) Log on to our website to discover over 500 multihulls tests! With a large group of yachts finishing overnight, the bulk of the rather diminished fleet (32 boats retired) is now berthed in Hobart. Most notably today we saw the presentation of the Tattersalls Cup to Matt Allen and the team aboard Ichi Ban (their third such win since 2017) and the arrival of many of the Two Handers including Disko Trooper-Contender Sailcloth crewed by Jules Hall and Jan Scholten, winning the Two Handed divisions on IRC, ORCi and PHS.

Toni and I have been sailing for many years, so why are we going back to school? We share our reasoning and our thoughts about additional training and certifications. We were hesitant at first but agreed that we will need to be well-prepared and well-informed if we were to venture out of site of land. We discuss our re-affirmations of ASA 101, 103, 104, 114 (video available at: https://youtu.be/7cWvPueP4i0 ) all taken over one week in the clear waters of the Exumas. These 4 certifications primed us for ASA 105 where we practiced plotting and navigation along the coast and learned to account for leeway, currents, and tides. We then took ASA 119 to learn weather forecasting and got way more than we bargained for. Confident with our new coastal navigation skills and detailed weather planning, we are looking forward to the day we slip the dock lines and venture towards the setting sun. Feel free to comment and let us know your thoughts.
