Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 3 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. Litza is a Devon Rex cat and she is the real cattain aboard. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea.

After a long wait, with my davits done, I can finally install my new batteries and solar. And...great success! My boat has 660ah of LiFePo4 batteries and a single solar panel that is 490 watts. I need more solar eventually, but this is a huge upgrade from my 200ah AGM (so really closer to 100ah) and 150 watts of solar (which never ever got close to that). The old setup had solar and a wind gen and maxed out at 7 amps, assuming a strong gust of wind and a sunny day. On the first day of testing this new panel I've seen 35 amps going through it. At the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series in Detroit, the Cal 25s fleet was small but mighty but no match for the expertise of the father/son team of Paul and Ross Nuechterlein’s Never Alone. Their class win put them in the running for the regatta’s overall title and a berth at the Caribbean Championship with @SunsailHolidays. We caught up with the team after their win, and confident they'll be an excellent addition to the Caribbean Championship lineup.

Handed over to her first and only owner in the summer of 2015, SAPPHIRE BLUE has only been used privately and always with a professional crew on board. Her maintenance regime has been pro-active and thorough, her owner is extremely experienced and has always been closely involved in the management and sailing of the yacht. She benefits from a very full inventory for comfort aboard including full air conditioning, upgraded generator, upgraded keel, high-capacity water-maker, under-water lights, recent canvass, Starlink and many other well-chosen extras. Her aesthetics are excellent - the hull was painted in Awlgrip Whisper Gray in 2020. Her mast, sails, boom and standing rigging were also new in 2020. The rig was NDT tested again in 2023. Today’s project on Alaskan Gypsy in the shipyard is a deep dive into the practical reality of welding new through-hulls in a steel sailboat hull. Our first project is cutting out and welding in a plug plate to cleanly remove on old abandoned through hull. We then install two new through-hulls in a new section of plate we installed in an earlier episode. I prep, fit, and weld in new schedule 80, and schedule 40 standpipes — each one beveled, aligned, and burned in with 6011 roots and 7018 cover passes. This episode walks through every stage of the process: A little hole saw trick for a template jig to plug an abandoned through hull. Marking the hull, cutting the pilot holes, setting up for overhead welds, checking penetration, grinding and cleaning, and finishing the exterior for primer. Along the way, I talk about amperage choices, puddle control, heat management, and a few of the surprises that come with working under a 55-ton steel schooner. It’s not glamorous, but it’s the kind of work that keeps an old ship alive.
