S1E23 - This week we attempt a winter ascent of the north-east ridge of Traenstaven, on the wild island Sanna, 60km off the Norwegian mainland. With our big goal, the Arctic Circle in mind, we've been sailing the winterly North Sea for weeks - now it's time to get into climbing again. I could not believe it. I had only just bought Wahine a few weeks before and my gear box went. The realities of being a boat owner I suppose. This was just the start of a series of setbacks. Can I keep going. www.pacificsolo.com Keel Club Founding Member: Harry A. Hill / Better U http://better-u.co.jp/ufc-gym/

It can feel lonely, left out & down right depressing just going through our daily routines & catching any spare time the kids would have for us. Well, we decided to do something about that, we set off on a journey around Australia in our RV until karma had other plans. Our lives took a different direction after this, which allowed us to grab a lifetime dream that we didn’t think was ever possible but in reality, it was. Please join two boomers as we embark on our new chapter & how we manage life & family from our MacIntosh 47’ sailboat heading home to Australia.

Christophe Favreau talks exclusively to the Vendee Globe's weather Consultant Christian Dumard who predicts the finish time and says that any of today's top ten place getters can win. At time of recording on Jan 11 in Les Sables d'Olonne Jeremie Beyou in CHARAL was rounding Cape Horn and charging the fleet towards the finish. Can a boat that starts NINE DAYS after the fleet, win or get a place on the podium? We will see. Meanwhile Alex Thomson is ferrying HUGO BOSS back to the UK from Cape Town. Keep watching the WoW's Vendee Globe reports.

I've always wanted to see one of the oldest working lighthouses in existence - Torre de Hércules in La Coruna. Before this lighthouse was built in the first century by Romans, on the very same place there was a smaller lighthouse, marking the harbor entrance to the old Celtic kingdom of Galicia and it's capital - Brigantia. A very special place indeed! It was a very windy day and raining, but that wouldn't stop me, off-cause :) More about Brigantia here: https://ancientworlds.net/aw/Places/Place/395170

The Majestic helm station has been carefully designed to facilitate short-hand sailing with all sheets and halyards leading back to the helm. The electric winch controls are all color-coded for ease of use and conveniently located on both sides. A new feature is a very modern storage area for all the extra lines, keeping the helm very neat. The well-protected helm area behind a solid bulkhead with easy forward access now includes a large stainless steel safety rail as an added feature. The large windows at the helm allow the skipper exceptional visibility, being able to see all four corners of the boat, these windows can also open, offering great airflow. The solid bimini has large glass windows that allow the skipper to see all the sails while underway. The raised helm seat is well-located but not isolated at all. It’s out of the way of guests, yet close enough to still join in and socialize with family, friends or guests in the cockpit. https://royalcapecatamarans.com/ #RoyalCapeLuxury #CatamaranHelm #MajesticCatamarans
We continue to enjoy Gibraltar but are disappointed with the amount of litter in the water around the marina so the children take it upon themselves to clean it upon. We watch the Governors last Guards Parade, service the winch, splice the Starlink cable, make a Passerelle from a slide and enjoy Easter with our friends The Summers. We are a family of five with plans for an epic adventure, sailing around the world. We have bought a boat we have to gut it, rebuild it, sell all of our possessions and have t he guts to cast off. Grabbing our dive gear we explore the wreck of the SS President Coolidge off the island of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu, a luxury liner converted into a troop carrier during World War II. We complete several dives with Chris's dive buddies from Australia flying over to join us, go to dinner by tender and watch a fire show. After being sunk by allied mine the Coolidge is regarded as one of the best wreck dives in the world. We then head just a few hundred metres away and dive Million Dollar Point. At the end of WWII the Americans built a wharf and dumped all the excess equipment into the sea. JCB diggers, cars, jeeps, forklifts and more all into the sea. The result is a mass of equipment at the bottom of the ocean which today certainly totals much more than a million dollars. We’re Chris and Jo and we have been living on our Seawind 1260 since January 2019. In our first year we bring our yacht down the east coast of Australia and sail it out to New Caledonia. After cruising further north up the east coast of Australia in 2020, we decide to circumnavigate Australia during 2021 and 2022. We had previously owned fishing and water skiing boats, but after a couple years crewing in South Australia we decided to jump right in and make a sea change. We are just an ordinary Aussie couple exploring what this great world has to offer and hope that we can inspire others just as we were by watching other YouTube channels to follow our dreams. #vanuatu #seawind1260 #seawindcats #sailing #sailingboat #sailingyacht #yacht #yachting #yachtinglifestyle #cruisinglife #scubadiving #scuba #wreckdiving #santo

IN THIS VIDEO: We sail to Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, making a game out of our lazy sailing—can we hoist the mainsail without it snagging in the lazy jacks? But our fun quickly turns into panic when we realize we’ve made a critical anchoring mistake—we’re too close to the channel. Suddenly, a massive cruise ship is bearing down on GoTFO⛵, narrowly missing us! That heart-pounding moment teaches us a valuable lesson, and we quickly relocate to a mooring ball across the bay. With the boat now safely secured, Dennis tackles the annual winch service, and we believe we’re the first to document how to service Lewmar size 46 and 50 winches. As he works, Dennis casually mentions a long shaft, and Ann—never one to let an opportunity slip—fires back with an innuendo, setting off a chain reaction of playful jokes. Once the winch is reassembled, something doesn’t sound quite right, so Dennis dives into troubleshooting while Ann gets creative. She repurposes our dinghy pole into a dive flag, swapping out the broken all-around white dinghy light for the Alpha flag—the international symbol for divers in the water. Naturally, the dinghy pole also becomes prime material for more jokes. We then set sail for Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe, flying across the water at nearly 9 knots—almost half the wind speed. After anchoring, we take Schatzi for a stroll through town, soaking in the French charm, complete with a cordonnerie (shoemaker) and picturesque streets. The ferry shuttles back and forth, but at one point, we witness something we’ve never seen before—it actually picks up a ginormous mooring ball! Meanwhile, several wing foilers carve effortlessly across the waves, fueling our dreams of learning the sport in the future. Supplies to service your Harken winches: -High-performance winch Oil by Lewmar -Harken Winch Grease -Isopropyl Alcohol, Mineral Spirits, Diesel or Gasoline -Toothbrush or similar brush to apply winch grease -Allen Key metric set -Flat head screw driver CURRENT LOCATION: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV-GTFO/ ABOUT OUR CATAMARAN: We love our new Balance 482 - it's a perfect size for a cruising couple to handle and is a great "balance" of performance and comfort. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482. Follow them as they get real about boat life and all the hassles of buying a new boat because we all know N.E.W. means Not Everything Works. This Video highlights the condition and marine diversity of the outer Great Barrier Reef. We sail from Hope East Island to the Ribbon Reefs and Cod Hole, during a rare opportunity of calm weather during the trade wind season. Next stop: Lizard Island, our most Northern anchorage for the sailing season.
When you’re sailing alone, falling overboard isn’t really a situation you “solve”. You prevent it. Being clipped in. Wearing a life vest. And carrying a PLB so someone can find you if things go wrong. Mine never leaves me. It’s from Jotron and it’s one of those pieces of gear you hope you never need… but you definitely want to have. There are other options, but personally, I’m not convinced that’s a realistic option. Out here, the real safety system is simple: Stay attached to the boat. ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. What could have been a setback turned into a unique family experience, as we slowly sailed between idyllic atolls, adapting to a simpler, more hands-on way of life while waiting for essential spare parts to arrive. Despite the challenge, we embraced every moment. One of the highlights of our time was celebrating Yewan’s birthday in the most extraordinary way—snorkelling over a mysterious shipwreck, a vessel with a history as layered as the ocean itself, having changed names several times over the years. Gliding above its remains in crystal-clear waters made for a birthday none of us will ever forget. We discovered a charming spot to enjoy pizza, and explored small local shops in search of supplies. Reprovisioning became an adventure of its own, as we sourced fresh produce from a nearby farm and made do with what was available, learning to be resourceful along the way. When the long-awaited spare parts finally arrived, it marked a turning point in our journey. Together as a family, we worked side by side to repair the steering system, transforming a technical challenge into a shared achievement. With everything back in working order, we completed our final preparations—refilling our water tanks, refuelling, and getting ready for the next leg of our voyage. This experience of sailing around the Maldives with an emergency tiller wasn’t just about overcoming obstacles—it was about resilience, family teamwork, and discovering the beauty of slowing down in one of the world’s most breathtaking destinations. --- MUSIC CREDITS: Music by: https://www.bensound.com License code: B79AYU6ZLYQAENT7 Artist: : Benjamin Tissot Music by: Bensound License code: K10OWWQIU4IFACM0 Artist: : Benjamin Tissot --- 💙 SUPPORT OUR CHANNELS: A big THANK-YOU to our MOTHERSHIP PATREON family who make these videos possible.
