Soft shackles are fast becoming more popular than traditional metal shackles making tying the a skill that every sailor should know. If you have put off learning how to make them due to the complicated knots and splices which are often required to create them, then this is the video for you. The team at Bottom Up Boats have created the ultimate soft shackle video, demonstrating three soft shackles and four ways to secure them using the simplest of sailing knots that most sailors already know how to tie. With in minutes you will be able to create hundreds of soft shackles in seconds like we do in the video. While we still prefer to make the version which do require some simple splicing due to the extra strength they give, you can not go past this video to learn how to make them in seconds. We will tech you how to turn a meter of any rope into a shackle that has 100's of use case in less than 10 second. This is the new must have skill for anyone who sails, allowing you to create spare parts on the fly. Finally a new video. We are back and in action after a minor boat refit down here in New Zealand. In this epic video as we check out of Tonga and hit the high seas for our much anticipated passage to New Zealand. We had a hilarious run-around just trying to check out of Tonga. But we finally nailed it and were happily let out of the country! The weather window was short with ever increasing winds and waves. We needed to get going ASAP. With a short stay at Minerva and a bucket list item checked off, when we took a left turn out of the atoll and pointed our bow towards New Zealand. The weather allowed for a rum line passage with a northeaster pushing us the whole way. A short passage for us but what can be, and has been for many, an arduous multi week slog. And wow what a weather window it was… QUICK WET BOUNCY AND FAST. Ahem well yeah your mind could go to the gutter with that description, but we broke records on our speedy little Nahoa. 200 nautical miles in one day. An average over 8 knots and did I mention the crazy most uncomfortable motion and loud creaky banging passage ever? Although it was awful, cold, uncomfortable we finally made it into the Bay of islands on a dark blustery day. Tied up to the quarantine dock we popped the champagne and had a blissful night in the calm waters of the Marina. And believe it or not, they let us in the country! (with only minor confiscations of seeds and bear spray) Customs welcomed with warm arms! What a day. What a week. With the bikinis put away we bundle up in the nights. Riley and Josje left me onboard by myself to go and hike a red hill on the island of La Graciosa. The wind picked up to 32 knots, gusting to 35 and the two boats next to me left to find shelter one having dragged anchor first. I’d stayed home to catch up on some work but because stress levels were through the roof, I didn’t get a thing done. But I’m glad I did stay home, because we would have never of known about the sudden change in the weather all the way up on that hill. One engine wasn’t working and the other wasn’t 100% reliable (the same problem with the control boxes needing replacing and a jump start was required if you wanted to fire it up before then). "Come on over to our sailboat we have SUPER fast Internet, even in the middle the ocean!!!" Is something I never thought I would say. But here we are in a brave new world with satellites zooming overhead beaming internet down from space. And now we're literally catching these space beams with a very fancy, very shiny computer controlled gimbaled bit of hardware and using it to stay connected and work remotely. Both at sea and in the far corners of the globe! In this video we'll show how we installed and configured the components and system to work on SV Delos :) So how did this all come about? Well like most good ideas it involved a few beers.... At the Southampton boat show I met a very cool guy named Bill. It turns out Bill is a sailor and watches our videos. It also turns out that Bill leads a team at Viasat Maritime. After quite a few scheming sessions we figured out a system that could deliver high speed broadband internet to a sailboat the size of Delos. In fact Bills major concern was how would having this type of internet all the time affect life on board? Knowing we cherish our offline time at sea. My answer- well it does have an off switch right?!? 😜So we began a pilot project with Viasat to prove the concept, which will lead to affordable systems for sailors and those wanting to untether themselves work as true digital nomads wherever you find yourself. We have a small weather window to escape Cartagena....usually skirted with gale force winds, Chris Parker, the weather guru, has predicted a break of a day and a half so we must leave Friday to the Cayman Islands. It all goes well although we are a bit late in leaving but we are blessed with beautiful conditions and manage to sail up the coast not on track at all. We do this to get some east up our sleeves to make the journey later on an easier one but we hear on the latest forecast that our weather window has shrunk and we must get out of the strong wind otherwise we will get clobbered. We manage to do this but 35 knots squalls are waiting for us at our turning point in the middle of nowhere right next to a hazardous reef. Give it a thumbs up if you liked this episode! Despite several years of foiling behind us now, most of the world’s sailing records are still held by non-foiling boats. But if foiling boats are so much faster, how come they haven’t broken more records? In this video we are going to explore why. Foiling is when the hull of a boat is lifted out of the water by underwater wings called hydrofoils, like these International Moth dinghies which have been using full foiling since 2000. With the highest 10 second average for a Moth of 35.9 knots, it the fasted rated sailing dinghy in the world. The first larger boat to use full foiling was L’Hydroptere, a French Experimental trimaran. She broke the sailing speed record in 2009 with speeds of 52.86 KT over 500M, and 50.17 KT over a nautical mile. She did briefly reach 56.3 KT, but not for long enough to qualify as a record, and lost control and capsized shortly afterward. Since 2013 the America’s Cup and SailGP boats have also been full-foilers, but interestingly none of them have yet gone faster than L’Hydroptere. In 2017 Gitana 17 was launched. She is the first ocean-going maxi trimaran designed from the ground up for full foiling, but in the five years she’s been sailing, she still hasn’t broken IDEC Sport’s non-foiling around-the-world record. Some boats, like Alex Thomson’s 2016 Vendee Globe boat Hugo Boss are designed as partial-foilers, where the hull is still in the water much of the time, but the foils provide some lift and reduce pitching. In this footage Alex had broken his starboard foil off so his hull is fully in the water. But despite sailing 2/3 of the way around the world with a missing foil he still came in second, and ahead of foiling boats behind him. So what’s the deal with foiling boats. Why don’t foiling boats like Gitana 17 hold more World Records? It’s because there are lots of practical and physical limitations associated with foiling, which we will discuss in this video, not the least of which is cavitation at around 50 knots.
