Aller Anfang ist schwer, die Rückschläge mehren sich, schön langsam wird´s hart, wenn ihr das seht sollten wir schon in der Gegend von Budapest sein. Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles Andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. In this new series of The Rogue Rigger I take you along on my campaign to go to the 5o5 World Championships in Hayling Island, England. The worlds start in July of 2026 so we have just a year and a half to go. Follow Mike and I on our journey to get to the world championships, from boat upgrades, practice days, regattas, debriefs and some shenanigans along the way. In the first episode I knock out a bunch of new upgrades to our boat. WARNING there is a bunch of splicing montages. After 2 years of sailing the boat we have found what we like and dislike about the boat doing everything to optimize it so that we can sail it to the full potential. As well we loaned the boat out to one of the top teams in the world and they gave a bunch of good feed back and ways to make it faster. Larry Tuttle from Waterat (The guy who built the boat) did some composite work to our foils and the forward bulkhead and gave us a bunch of rigging upgrade suggestions.

Being back in Canada in May is a chilly month to be living on our 33 ft. (10 metres) wooden sailboat. We put our little wood stove to good use. In the galley Mark replaces a tap on the sink. Also that week he repositioned the radar reflector because while at sea, coming back from Bermuda, the jib halyard caught around it and he had to climb the mast to undo it. Finally, after two months of being back to work, we head out for a sail on the Lunenburg Bay and sail by the Ovens National Park. In picture postcard conditions (for those of us old enough to remember what postcards were) the Cruising fleet set out under a light breeze after a delayed start from what was meant to be the long island race. We caught up with the fleet at the start and then again when they were sailing downwind with the spinnakers up. A very colourful sight!

We set sail from Pancake Creek to Bundaberg and catch a couple nice sized Spanish Mackerel. After restocking our supplies in Bundaberg, we meet up with Robert's family. We explored the Bundy Rum factory and the following morning set sail to Hervey Bay catching a couple tuna along the way. After a day relaxing, we head down the Great Sandy Straights inside Fraser Island to Kingfisher Bay Resort.

Sailing Coco Happy Sunday fellow Coco’ers were back with another weekly sailing vlog instalment. This week we have a change of crew, Dania (Ceylan’s cousin) leaves us to head on home and return to London as she heads to Camp America for the next three months. Kev & Tina replace her and meet up with us in Corsica. We sail through 30+ knot winds and Coco handles like a dream, although we didn’t catch much of it on camera, we battle through and find a nice sheltered anchorage! We find a “pink beach” on the north coast of Sardinia but discover that no one is allowed to actually set foot on the beach. After a trip to the fishing tackle shop we put 4 fishing lines trailing the back of the boat in an attempt to finally catch a fish. We will let you watch the video and find out what the outcome of that was. Spending a good few tipsy nights at anchor we get our “chill” on and the crew is blessed with some homemade Alfie cooking.
