Liferaft fails Having caught up with our friends on Pisces 11, we weighed anchor and set off for Gocek. We trouble shoot problems of my flat Bow Thruster battery and then take our liferaft ashore to have its 3 yearly service. It FAILS.. in fact is unservicable so we need to buy another one but at close to $4000NZD its really going to hurt. In this episode we dodge the rain to make more progress preparing the deck for the Bow Roller and Pulpit (more FR4 and epoxy). We also made some progress preparing for the Dyneema chainplates for the main mast. We are refitting a 44 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings. We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). Now that the inside is dry (thanks to new windows, new hatches and leak chasing) we are fitting her out for live-aboard world cruising. IN THIS VIDEO: We head to Newport, RI to drop off our poor beheaded asymmetrical spinnaker at Doyle Sails for a hopeful repair... Meanwhile, we explore the historic downtown area by way of an audio walking tour. We've always known Newport was a big sailing town, but never knew of it's historic role and significance during the Revolutionary War. It's something we love about living on our boat and exploring new places! We made new friends with Wolfgang and Colleen, who had reached out to us via Instagram. Wolfgang was even kind enough to share his drone footage of Newport which is featured in the video. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. They say Lunenburg is one of the most beautiful cities to approach from the sea, but how would we know when we arrived in a thick fog making it impossible to see anything but a few meters ahead? In this episode we say good bye to sailing in the USA and leave rather hastily as a good weather window suddenly appeared. After going through the Cape Cod Canal we pointed our bow towards Lunenburg and Canada. Arriving just to find out that the they wanted to send customs down to do an inspection - our very first inspection! To say the least, Canada show itself from its best side and treated us to a great anchorage, sunny and warm weather and a great first town to visit. Jump aboard and enjoy this place with us! In this Sailing Helios episode, we cast off from Denia as thunderstorms rumble along the coast – not ideal sailing weather! We push on and find excellent shelter from the forecast strong winds tucked beside the dramatic Penyal d'Ifac (Peñón de Ifach), the iconic limestone rock in Calpe that towers 332 meters (over 1,000 feet) – as tall as the Empire State Building and dominating the Costa Blanca skyline. After waiting out the bad weather for a day (and enjoying the stunning views), we set sail south toward Alicante with the wind, waves, and current all pushing us along – finally some proper sailing! It's exhilarating to harness the breeze after the calm, but we're excited to arrive in Alicante for a few days of exploring the city and its sights. We ran the M/V Caribbean Explorer as captains/managers between 1992 and 1997 (6 months on/off). The regular dive itinerary was St Maarten- Saba and St Kitts. This was a first class operation and divers enjoyed the great diving in Saba & St Kitts. We were even nominated #1 worldwide dive operators in the first Rodale's reader's survey! I made a weekly underwater video of each trip by combining the best stock footage I had to-date and shots taken of our passengers during the week. Many divers bought the week's movie to take home a souvenir. This film is the result of over a thousand dives in the area. This film is dedicated to all our crews and passengers during these fun trips!
