Maybe this is Australia’s best scuba dive for fish life, it certainly was for us, just phenomenal, huge numbers of coral trout, bait fish, Trevally etc it was all there in large numbers on the Great Barrier Reef.

We live on the banks of the 60 mile long river Tamar, the boundary between Devon and Cornwall in SW England. Right opposite Devonport Naval Dockyard, the largest such dockyard in Europe, one that has been operating since 1691. So that implies two things. First, the river is wide and deep and second, it's very busy with large warships and, in the past, nuclear submarines and even square rigged "Men of War". It also means there are few places where it's possible to cross the river. In my previous Chat 18 video I sailed past the first crossing point, the Torpoint chain ferry. In this video I sail a few miles upstream to sail under the two bridges at the Cornish town of Saltash. The first is the railway bridge, built by I K Brunel and finished in 1859. And right next to it is the road bridge, officially opened in 1962, and which replaced another chain ferry. Both are over 100ft high to allow tall ships to pass under. Surprisingly, Saltash town is older than the much larger Plymouth. So despite the Union Jack painted pub people in Cornwall often say that crossing the bridge is "going to England" The next (and prior to 1962 the most seaward) road bridge is the "Gunnislake New Bridge" - actually built in 1520! - some 20 miles north of Saltash. The source of the river is only a couple of miles from the north coast, so Cornwall is almost an island. Once past the bridges the landscape changes and there are fields down to the water on both sides with no large towns. However the Tamar is still navigable for another 15 miles, as far as the weir at Morwellham, although Calstock is the sensible northern end for most. More on those for another time. For one of the joys of small boat cruising is that you can go where no large boat dare venture, so there's lots to explore without going out to sea. But whatever size boat you sail it's always weather permitting. The heading photo was taken from our house and shows the Torpoint ferries in the storm of Feb 18th. We were surprised they were still running in 80mph winds. And we were very lucky it wasn't a high spring tide or we would probably have been flooded, as the tide was 600mm, 24in above prediction! From airport to taxis, food, peaceful bays, towns worth walking in and more. We left Mayreau Island for the short 4 mile sail to Union Island, eager for more great times on these islands! We decided to start at Frigate Bay in Ashton Harbour and then head over to Chatham, before we ended our stay at Clifton and Happy Island! This way we could check out at Clifton, as this was our last stop in Grenadines. Ashton Harbour was more than we expected! Large bay with cliffs on one side and the town on the other. In the middle, mangroves, and the defunct marina. One of the first things we did was a dinghy tour through the marina that never was. The marina was supposed to hold 300 boats but the project died after only a year, leaving a clogged up harbor that was growing algae due to the constrained water flow. There is a super interesting story about the rebirth of this area here. https://www.birdscaribbean.org/2019/11/ashton-lagoon-a-joyful-story-of-restoration-and-rebirth/. It is well worth a read to understand the damage that unchecked development can do to an area. A recent restoration effort built a walkway over some of the waterway that seems to be maintained for day trip boaters to hike around the area. We did some snorkeling while in the marina waters and did see some interesting fish but not pretty coral. Our second day, we hiked Mount Taboi. There are actually two vantage points-one about halfway up at 500 ft, the other at about 1000 ft. We chose the 500 ft one. From there we could see Mayreau, Palm, Tobago Cays, Clifton and of course Frigate Bay. On our way back, we ran into a Sea Moss farmer. Sea moss has been used in traditional medicine for hundreds of years for its role in boosting immunity, thyroid health, and heart health.  Leaving Frigate Harbour, we headed to Chatham. We experienced super calm waters in this bay. And spotted a Sunroof Eco 70 - solar powered to the max. https://sunreef-yachts.com/en/launched/sunreef-70-eco-one-planet/ We spent some time at Tenuti resort - highly recommended! Dinner there was fantastic, but since it was so calm, bug spray was needed. https://www.tenutachathambay.com/ In stark contrast, the beach had Tenuti Resort on one end, owned by an Italian investor and your beach bars and shacks on the rest of it. The beach even treated us to a rare site - krill shrimp washed on shore. While in Chatham, we were assisted by very kind local boat guys who knew where to get the fresh produce we had been craving! Next stop was Clifton Harbor, took a mooring ball right behind the reef - protected but a great view. And of course Happy Island - the bar built on conch shells. A bit noisy on the weekends but it was nice being outside the busy bay. Clifton had plenty of restaurants to choose from, cute places that seemed to cater to us tourists. They had a produce stand market area where we were able to source some of the food we were needing. We even mapped our Tsunami Hazard Zone out during out walk through town. Lastly, we visited Sparrow’s Beach Club on the other side of Clifton Harbor in Richmond Bay. Beautiful beach but more of a day anchorage. While in Clifton, we also watched the kite boarders once the wind finally picked up! Interestingly enough, Stephen’s uncle actually built a church here on Union Island back in the 90s. We are currently in Trinidad as Hurricane Beryl passes through Grenada, anchored in one of the few anchorages not overrun with the hundreds of boats that came here to seek refuge. This anchorage is very exposed to the South-West, so chop has been building to the point that we needed to use our washboards while anchored! They are standard on the @visionyachts2882 444 and are designed to limit the water coming into the cockpit while still allowing adequate drainage. They even come in a pretty amazing padded storage bag that Bev at the factory makes for every boat. There is another set that can be installed at the sliding door, but thankfully we haven’t had to resort to that yet.

IN THIS VIDEO: Can you believe another boat hit us while GoTFO⛵️ was at anchor in broad daylight? After a quick sail from Fort-de-France, Martinique, we found ourselves anchored in the stunning Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia. Our friends Ted and Mia on SV *Serengeti* had left just ahead of us, and we gave it our best shot to catch up. We nearly closed the gap, but their head start was just a bit too much—next time, *Serengeti*! Rodney Bay is every bit the Caribbean dream, with its white sand beaches, turquoise water, and palm-lined resorts. Once anchored, we headed ashore to clear customs and immigration, and then explored the area. It's definitely got a touristy vibe, but there's also a strong boating presence with chandleries and marine shops that make life easier for cruisers like us. During one of our dinghy runs to shore, we spotted two young French women struggling to row after their outboard gave up. Dennis tossed them a line and towed them in—our second dinghy rescue of the week! Good karma, right? Oh—and yes, we got hit by another boat… again! Thankfully, no harm done this time. A 15-foot Hobie Cat, rented by a vacationing couple, accidentally bumped into us. Luckily, their soft bow made it more of a gentle nudge than a true collision. Still—twice in one week? We made sure to stick around for Rodney Bay's legendary Friday night “Jump Street” party, a 50-year-old tradition full of music, food, and high-energy fun. The next morning, we prepped the boat, weighed anchor, and pointed the bow toward Soufrière—home of the iconic Pitons and more adventures ahead. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482.
