A race around the Isle of Wight on Saturday 1st August marked the return to competitive racing at the Royal Ocean Racing Club, the first since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. 133 boats took part. Multihull Line Honours went to PowerPlay, helmed by Peter Cunningham. MOD70 PowerPlay, skippered by Ned Collier Wakefield, with Peter Cunningham on the tiller also did the double winning the MOCRA Class “I have been in quarantine for 14 days, so that was a release!” smiled Peter Cunningham. “That is the first time I have raced around the island. The sun was shining, a beautiful day, a great boat, top crew and a fun race. This was a fantastic way to come out of quarantine. We plan to do more RORC racing during August and September.”

Van Union Island zeilen we naar de Tobago Cays, waar schildpadden en ander onderwaterleven onder de boot scharrelen. We nemen helaas afscheid van Kim en Vincent van de Heron en van Bart en Kim van Tranquillity. Dan zeilen we door naar Bequia waar de volgende uitdaging ons wacht. Jarenlang heb ik ervan gedroomd om zeilend te gaan waar de wind me brengt. In 2020 was het dan eindelijk zover en heb ik samen met Felia een prachtige reis gemaakt naar Scandinavië en de Baltische staten. Onze Eva, een Atlantic 43 uit 2007, is een aluminium zeiljacht met hefkiel en gebouwd en uitgerust voor reizen naar plaatsen die net achter de horizon liggen. Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles Andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Mouillage à la Puntilla, abrité et accueillant, avec en prime sa plage nudiste — escale aussi tranquille qu’atypique. Le lendemain, reprise de la mer dans les mêmes conditions : 25 nœuds de vent et 3,50 m de houle bien formée. Navigation engagée jusqu’au mouillage de Los Caserones, où l’on trouve enfin un peu de répit. Dernière traversée vers Las Palmas. Coup de chance inespéré : une place se libère au port juste avant l’arrivée de la tempête annoncée à 45 nœuds. When we first arrived at this cabin in Port Protection, Alaska, we could already see something wasn’t right. Besides the two trees leaning on the roof, the structure had shifted slightly downhill and several of the foundation piers were leaning. Before we could even begin addressing the foundation problem, we had to remove multiple trees that had fallen against the structure. Once the trees were cleared, it was time to go underneath the house and figure out what was really going on. What we found was a complicated mix of leaning posts, sloped bedrock, and large voids in the ground where old roots and unstable soil made it difficult to place proper supports. With the structure sitting in a questionable position, the first priority became simple: stabilize the building before things got worse. Working in remote Southeast Alaska means solving problems with the materials on hand. Supplies can be days away, and every repair requires creativity and careful planning. In this video we install temporary supports and start mapping out a long-term plan for stabilizing the cabin’s foundation. The big question moving forward: Can this cabin be made safe again?
