Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Sneak Peak of our latest listing, the magnificent Privilege 495: 'Dancing Walrus'. The owner, a young man from Florida, who single-handedly (.... well with his Labrador Freddy) took this boat from one side of the Atlantic to the next (backwards and back again), and then pretty much circumnavigated South America, stopping via the redoubtable Falkland Islands and getting through the Magellan Strait, something even Joshua Slocum found a sailing equivalent of climbing Everest, and which has been explored by boat by less humans than have been in space .... a feat Dancing Walrus took on like she was born for it and a real credit to Privilege Catamarans. (Who thought cats are only champagne boats, right?) Back up towards Peru and then onto Panama, they sailed on to Tahiti, got stuck in Covid lockdown through 2020 and then made a dash to Fiji at the first opportunity. They are now here in our backyard. Now off market, but a very interesting video to watch if you seek inspiration on how to fit out a similar boat for live-aboard living and independent world cruising. This was at the very beginning of the pandemic when no one was sure what to do or what was going to happen. At the time this was filmed we were allowed to sail but not go ashore, this was what we were told by officials. Since then that has changed greatly. Did you know that there is a whistle language?! El Silbo, is the whistle language of La Gomera and origin from the native Canarians. Since 1999, all children learn it in the school and the language is acknowledged by UNESCO. Our last days on the island are spent snorkeling, walking in San Sebastian and celebrating Johan's birthday. Then we sail to Tenerife and cross an acceleration zone again with a lot of wind! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved in to our sailboat RAN, a one-off aluminium built Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. This week we finished up what was meant to be a small boat job - a spring clean of the aft cabin bed and the v-berth. We ripped out all of our cabin sole, water heater, batteries, rotten wood and more and started from scratch. Painting a clean, white space under the bed and installing new floors and cabin sole. As we put the hatches back on, we realized that most of our hard work wouldn’t be seen with the mattress back on… so we revarnished the wood and the master cabin is now fully refitted and sparkling! Hello Seaplorers of Vela Nautica In this episode we sailed first time long distance since Vela Nautica got her refit. Unfortunately it was very rough and we encountered a storm. The tidal currents and the continental shelf in the bay of Cadiz made sailing very uncomfortable. Vela Nautica was thrown by crossing confused seas and overcoming waves. It became even more diffcult as more and more traffic came up over night and made navigating more tireing. It was not a fun sailing at all, but what they say is YOU ARE NOT A SAILOR IF YOU ONLY SAILED IN A CALM DAY. We where bound for Gibraltar, while considering to search shelter in the closer harbour of Cadiz we decided to go on and head for Gibraltar as we visited Cadiz before. And as always after rain there is sunshine and we droped anchor in sunny conditions under the ROCK OF GIBRALTAR.
