We are looking at the possibilities offered by three different Atkin-designed dinghies, and John helps us think about the type of cruising Steve wants to do, the adventures he wants to have in a sailing and rowing tender, and which design will be the best fit. We also discuss design alteration and what's acceptable for changing the building method, length overall (LOA), or other attributes of these designs. Hello Everyone! The Far Side gets splashed and we take off for The Bahamas!!! During this video we take you along during our 11 hr crossing. We had 8-10 ft rollers and gust of 20 knots and then we finally made it into Bahamian waters! We stop at Cat Cay for the night and then continue on to Bimini to clear in and start enjoying our time in the Bahamas and celebrate Sascha's Birthday, she's 25!!! Some good friends of ours put together a perfect short YouTube clip that we have linked during our video for those of travelers who are looking to cruise to The Bahamas. Traveling to the Bahamas Covid requirements: Friends of ours from Knot a Clue made a great short video on traveling to the Bahamas that we have linked in our video. To enter clear into the Bahamas, everyone needs to receive a PCR covid test within five days of clearing in to the country. The results MUST be negative. Once the results have been received you go to travel.gov.bs and create an account where you submit a picture of your passport. Once the account has been made and you receive your negative PCR test results you will 'Add a Trip' where you input your travel arrival and return dates, where you will be clearing into the country, and an image of your negative test results. After adding your trip, wait a couple hours. If the trip is accepted you will be directed to another website where you will need to pay $60 for a health insurance policy while you are visiting the country. After following all the above steps you will receive a picture code that you will want to screenshot for the future and to give to immigration. As long as you arrive in the bahamas within that 5-day window, clearing in with immigration and customs will be a breeze. One more step is to take another rapid test, locations are listed on the travel website depending on where you are, five days after you arrive in the Bahamas. Once that test has been completed you are all set to enjoy your time! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. With Soulianis on the hard in Florida, we take our van up to The North Channel of Lake Huron and hop back on a sailboat! Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Canon R50 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Back up is a Canon 200d. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. I also use an Insta 360 and have two drones, a Magic mini2 and Mavic pro Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have limited communications with the outside World. Back in our homeport of Racine, we start tackling the long list of projects we want to finish before leaving for our journey down “The Ditch.” Kirk researches the heck out of LED bulbs. He determines the warm Kakanuo bulb https://amzn.to/2JX40fS to be the best option — based on color cast, energy consumption and brightness level — to replace all of our energy-sucking tungsten lights throughout the boat. And then, the dinghy motor. Our friends in Charlevoix so kindly gave us their old dinghy and a Nissan 2.5hp outboard, with a couple catches: the dinghy oarlocks were falling off, and the outboard didn’t start. Kirk glued the oarlocks back on in Charlevoix, but the motor still needed attention. He tackles it in this episode, starting off with a fresh tank of gasoline, then a new spark plug, and when it still doesn’t start he decided to take apart and clean the carburetor. Once he gets it running, we go for an afternoon cruise on the Root River. Amongst the chores, our boat neighbor Bruce shows us the charts of all the rivers we will be traveling on, and our friends Devon and Jess bring their son Cato by to check out Soulianis and play in the dinghy. She is equipped with a suite of navigation, communication and entertainment electronics that one would expect to find on much larger yachts.
