Dies ist wohl mein größtes und intensivstes Segelerlebnis bisher. Ich fahre ohne Stop einhand von Fécamp in Frankreich bis Porto in Portugal. Am Ende sind es fast genau 6 Tage und 773 sm, teilweise mit herrlichem Segelwind, aber auch einmal sehr rau auf der Biskaya, als ich an die galizische Küste komme. The preparations for the 4100 Nm sail to Hawaii continues in Papagayo, Costa Rica, with boat maintenance, provisioning and other things. We make a trip to Tamarindo and then we find an uninvited guest onboard in the middle of the night. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. THANKSGIVING TRAGEDY - Sailing family save son from freedive DROWNING at remote island With all forms of diving there are inescapable risks, unfortunately, on this occasion the thrill of the challenge may have clouded our vision. While sailing our liveaboard sailboat through the beautiful, tropical, south Thailand islands, we encounter a near fatal free diving accident. Our son Finn experienced a deep water blackout, or in layman's terms passed out underwater while surfacing from a 30m, 100ft free dive with no fins. Luckily is father had been keeping an eye on him, spotted him unconscious seven metres below the surface and, together with Finn's brothers, worked as a family to drag Finn back to safety, where they applied CPR until Finn regained consciousness. However, that was only the beginning of this freediving nightmare. In search of clear blue water for free diving and some windy days for kite surfing we instead discovered perished kite bladders and the inside of a hospital room. Freediving is a form of underwater diving that relies on breath holding until resurfacing rather than using breathing apparatus such as scuba diving. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. As our paths crossed with Sailing UMA we decided to check out the island Culebra, Spanish Virgin Islands, together both by road and by the sea! We rented a golf cart that we had to push to go up the hills and went to some of Culebras pretty beaches. Then we sailed around the island to the small islands Cayo Luis Peña and Culebrita. Such pretty, pretty islands! And I almost forgot, we found a bomb! :) We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. Most of the time we take clothes to the laundry but there are some things that have to be washed by hand…We took the drone to the beach, did some dancing and saw some kiteboarders. Lots of wildlife, birds, Portuguese man o’ wars and a small nurse shark. Getting serious, we brought out our weights and did some planking. We work on putting the final floor into The Hull Fame, and reinforce the area around our chainplates - which will then allow us to adhere all the bulkheads to the hull sides. This week's episode has us putting the new floor in for what will be our sail locker between bulkheads 2&3. Also known as, The Hull of Fame. ;) We get the ok from our designer and engineer that we can switch around the webbing and the floor, which will give us just a bit more room in there for storage. Next, we finally tackle the task of reinforcing the area behind the chainplates, which requires three sheets of unidirectional fiberglass, and two layers of 45/45 double biased. But now that it's done, we can work on glassing the bulkheads to the hull side. To throw a little excitement into our lives as well, we spend one afternoon hopping on The Marylander, where our friend Jason is captain. He shuttles us up the Severn River, were we have our first experience of catching crabs on a line. Fun to catch, and even more fun to eat! We hope you enjoy!! Much love from Annapolis! A RARE 1981 CSY 33 Bluewater Cruiser at $28,500!Canadian Ken couldn't join me for this one but it was still a ton of fun to explore and film! Less than 60 of these Caribbean Sailing Yachts were made. And this CSY 33 is loaded for bear and has been outfitted for long range cruising. Some of the upgrades include solar panels (2 on a stern aluminum arch), lithium iron batteries (3@100 amp each), Victron solar controller, and a Victron dc to dc charger. It also has a Garmin chartplotter, radar on gimballed mount attached to the mast, and a Garmin depth sounder. It is cutter-rigged and comes with a complete set of sails including a spinnaker, storm jib, and a trysail. The galley has a gimballed two-burner stove and oven, pressure water at the sink, and a dc powered freezer with a spill over refrigerator compartment. Finally there is brand new Hydrovane self-steering system. The included dingy is a Portland Pudgy. The Universal diesel engine has approximately 2,000 hours on it and runs like a top, per the owner. In short, she's ready to go. These CSY 33's are known for their unusually large cabins (for their size) and the fact that they are solid fiberglass from stem to stern, from keel to coach roof - in short, there is NO CORING, the bane of most boats from this era. This weeks episode we say goodbye suburbia and head back to boat life! After 8 weeks back in sunny Queensland we pack up our worldly possessions (again) and haul them half way around the world back to beautiful boat life and all the adventures that come with it! Were usually big fans of cheap and cheerful travel and whilst this time was no exception we did take the opportunity to slow down the pace a little and make a few stops along the way. We raced down to Waikiki beach on Honolulu, Hawaii. We overnighted (and almost froze to death) in New York (NYC) after an exhausting stomp through manhattan to get from JFK to Newark airport. then we cruised through Miami en-route to Grenada. We overnighted not far from the airport in Grenada so that we would arrive at the boat the next morning fresh and ready to work. We had no idea what we were walking into. After 3 long days on the road we finally made it back to our floating home, the Millennial Falcon.
