Proceeds from this video will go to the Coral Reef Alliance, but you can also support me directly (and specifically the production of these videos) by becoming a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/theadventuresoftarka Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific. I am sailing Tarka around the world in part to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. You can learn more here: http://www.theadventuresoftarka.com/fundraiser or visit their website directly: http://www.coral.org If you make a donation to their website directly in Tarka's honor, please send me an e-mail copy of your receipt so I can keep track of Tarka's fundraising. You can forward to: theadventuresoftarka@gmail.com Additional support for Tarka’s sail for CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) comes from contributions by: Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection Victron Energy - Providing monitoring solutions for Tarka's batteries, to ensure we always have enough juice to do what we need to. === Music credits: Plastic or Paper - Wes Hutchinson Take your pick - Aaron Lieberman Summar - Ehrling: https://soundcloud.com/ehrling Catch our Memories - Markvard: https://soundcloud.com/markvard Wishful Thinking - Dan Lebowitz Kona Sun - Freedom Trail Studio Dance With Me - Ehrling: https://soundcloud.com/ehrling

There's an adage: Cruising is just boat maintenance in exotic locations. Yep- that's what we're dealing with this week. After last week's engine disaster we're in full problem-solving mode. We find part of the problem and Nick sets to fixing it. And then we get to play and explore in Cartagena! He and his wife Tracey also lived and sailed two years and a half aboard their Garcia Exploration 45 "Pearl of Penzance”, they finally sold in 2020 for family reasons. So, that’s with the connoisseur’s point of view that Pete shares his impression after a sailing session on board the Garcia Exploration 52.

► The full article is available in Multihulls World #165: https://www.multihulls-world.com/review/catamaran/gunboat-68-when-a-cruising-catamaran-becomes-a-work-of-art ► built in France, Gunboats take up all the codes of the mythical American brand: the Gunboat 68, signed by VPLP, was the first model to be “made in La Grande Motte”. She was launched at the very beginning of 2019. Her program? Racing, obviously, and high-speed cruising. High-tech construction, curved daggerboards, interiors of pure luxury and multiple layout combinations, the “Guns” can be customized as desired. Other strong points: the maneuvering cockpit at the foot of the mast, inspired exterior lines and a generous sail plan - even playful with the bigger-mast version, such as on #1, Condor, that we had the chance to test. The manufacturer, which is able to deliver 3 to 4 units per year, will be launching the Gunboat 80... ► TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Builder: Gunboat Length: 69’1” (20.75 m) Beam: 29’10” (9.10 m) Light displacement: 39,240 lbs (17,800 kg) Draft: 3’11” / 13’5” (1.20 / 4.10 m) Mainsail area: 1,530 / 1,880 sq ft (142 / 175 m²) Genoa: 710 / 830 sq ft (66 / 77 m²) Spinnaker area: 3,500 / 4,660 sq ft (325 / 433 m²) No. of cabins: 4 / 5 / 6 Water: 2 x 100 US gal (2 x 378 l) Diesel: 2 x 100 US gal (2 x 378 l) Engines: 2 x 80 HP ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 500 multihulls tests! What a day! Even if it was just to go back to Shelter Bay, it was super great to take KARL out and use the new sails. We've had a beautiful day of sailing and KARL is now safely tied up at Shelter Bay marina again...Even if I was happier if the final destination of this trip would have been another one, I am still very thankful about this special time out at sea. Next week, KARL will be hauled out for bottom expection, to renew the antifouling and to widen one of the through holes for the new depth sounder. Find out more about my life with KARL on www.facebook.com/whitespotpirates. For those of you missing some of the woodworking and boatbuilding projects, we get to some much-anticipated DIY projects while at the mooring in Portland, Maine, such as getting the cherry wood winch bases cut to size, shaped, and installed on the coamings. Spoiler alert, they're beautiful. Other projects tackled: Lazy jacks were installed, and Steve does a cool hardware trick to get the rings he needed for them. It involves stainless steel chain. The roller furler for the furling jib has lengths of stainless steel that need to be cut to size and screwed to each other. Ever used Loctite AND 3M 5200 on a particular thing? This is definitely a measure 8 times cut once scenario, considering how very right it works when it's right, and how very wrong it can go if it's a little off-size. A sunset sail?! Don't mind if we do! Thanks for coming out, friends. Head over to KP's channel: @MakeSpaceByKP Watch the videos about Victoria being built: @TheArtofBoatBuilding -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. In this weeks episode we go through some stereotypical Sailboat maintenance shenanigans, and by this we mean, trying to fix something and end up breaking it. Unfortunately for us we discovered the repair had not worked at a very inopportune moment, under sail.... However in true cruiser fashion we improvised using our port side winch until we reached our destination in Grenada where Khiara immediately set about fixing the problem. Despite having a few hiccups along the way we had a riper of a sail down to Grenada from Carriacou arriving with plenty of daylight to spare and a super convenient anchorage waiting for us. The experiment continues :) Thanks for all the feedback on our last Slow Tv episode! For this one we strapped the camera just above the cockpit. It's one static view 40 minutes long of Delos beating upwind from Trinidad to Grenada. The idea behind these videos is to provide a relaxing, ambient experience with natural audio and no editing. Something to relax to, put up on your flatscreen or second monitor, and just zone out and watch the world go by. Hope you enjoy, and as always looking forward to your feedback and suggestions. Fair Winds, Karin, Brian, Brady, and Alex. Don't know anything about SLOW TV? Some info below :) On a recent sail we were inspired by a TED talk on the concept of Slow TV. The idea is to capture an experience from a point of view over a long time span. Sooo.... What is it *really* like to live on a boat? As a liveaboard cruising couple, sailing around the world, and living on a boat full time, we're often asked about our sailing lifestyle. We've done a few 'Living On A Boat' episodes before, but this week we're doing something different: instead of documenting a fun, exciting day full of activities, we're showing you the realities of living on a boat. Not every day is full of adventure- in fact, most days we're just about staying on top of our chores and the daily jobs we need to do to look after ourselves and our boat. So, that's this week's episode! We hope you enjoy 😊 The equipment we use: Panasonic Lumix G85 https://amzn.to/2FsC2Kc Go Pro Hero 7 Black https://amzn.to/2SRTWtF DJI Mavic Pro 2 https://amzn.to/2D6nZbs DJI Spark https://amzn.to/2VQIal3 Manfrotto Pixie https://amzn.to/2RJbCud Manfrotto Smooth head tripod https://amzn.to/2snTJCQ DJI Osmo 2 https://amzn.to/2D7e9Go Lowepro Passport 3 https://amzn.to/2FnGef8 All this equipment has been tried and tested in the field and we love it! Losing the ability to steer a sailboat can quickly become a nightmare. We once assisted a sailboat in distress, SV Avatar, mid Pacific to try to fabricate a temporary rudder at sea, and its not something that you want to ever do. Every sailboat needs a good rudder system inspection, before crossing a big ocean, but there are parts of a rudder that are supposed to be hermetically sealed. So Patrick rips apart the rudder on this sailboat, inspects the rudder, and does a partial rudder repair/rudder rebuilt to this old sailboat. Despite our rudder looking fine on the outside, in this episode, Patrick rips open the rudder of our Valiant 40 sailboat, to inspect the condition of the spline to shaft attachments to make sure this rudder will survive another ocean crossing and well beyond. He is happy with what he sees, but he has some welding done between the spline and the rudder shaft, and then builds it back up with polystyrene balls and Cenolite in epoxy. The build up is continued using 1708 cloth and fairing compound. Now, this rudder is stronger and better than when it first left the Valiant factory in 1976. Join Patrick Childress for another great How to, DIY, Sailboat repair video! Patrick loves showing sailors how to fix up an old sailboat, and do sailboat maintenance, and even some sailing tips. He doesn't always make this old sailboat beautiful...but he always makes her seaworthy and dependable, ready to cross many oceans! ▬ FOLLOW ALONG! ▬▬ ✩Instagram: http://www.Instagram.com/svBrickHouse ✩ Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/SYBrickhouse ✩ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/SVBrickhouse ✩Our blog: :http://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com ✩Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/PatrickChildress ✩Tshirts and other: https://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com/store Support us to keep the videos coming: 🍯(Tip Jar) http://whereisbrickhouse.com/tip-jar/ ⛵️ TWO FREE SAILING COURSES: http://whereisbrickhouse.com/sailing-school PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/SVBrickHouse ⏩Start your Amazon shopping here: https://amzn.to/2K9MmuA ✩Tshirts and other: https://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com/store #sailingAfrica #PatrickChildressSailing #TravelsAnimals
Big news: my new sails arrived and I mounted them this week. They look great and I can't wait to take KARL out...but before that I planned to take the boat out of the water to check the bottom, renew antifouling and change to the new depthsounder, which has a wider diameter than the old one. And sometimes it seams that there is always something going wrong with KARL. Three bolts of one of the engine mounts broke and are now stuck inside the engine...and: the haulout did not work out in Panamarina because the trailer could not work KARL's twinkeels :(. Well, back to Shelter Bay it is, I guess. Find out more about my life with KARL on www.facebook.com/whitespotpirates. It’s our last day in Greece aboard the charter catamaran, sailing from the beautiful island of Agistri back to Athens. As we entered the marina, a line of a couple dozen boats all tried to dock at once with the wind picking up—things got a little hectic, but we managed to get in safely. After one final meal together, it was time to say goodbye to Aubrey from Sailing Miss Lone Star. It’s been a fun collaboration, and we’ll definitely sail together again in the future. From there, I flew back to the USA, launched my old boat, and began a solo sail to Annapolis. A big transition, and an exciting next chapter! We're Nick and Terysa and we’ve become completely obsessed with the idea of sailing around the world and sharing our experiences and information through our sailing lifestyle videos with others. We met travelling around India, and quickly agreed that rather than “settling down” and doing what most normal people do, we wanted to travel and adventure instead and started our sailing lifestyle adventure stories, since then, we’ve been working hard towards achieving our dreams, and now we’re finally living them as sailing cruising lifestyle!
In this video, I build a DIY boiler for hydronic heating aboard my sailboat Athena. *** Links *** Sail Life Shop: (Items are shipped from both the US and EU) https://saillifeshop.com/ Sail Life on Patreon: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnPatreon Sail Life on Instagram: http://instagram.com/madsdahlke Sail Life on Facebook: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnFacebook Sail Life on Twitter: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnTwitter Donations for the sandpaper fund: https://www.paypal.me/saillife
For more review, test, performance data, captain reports and more about 2015 Ocean Alexander 85 Motoryacht, go to http://www.boattest.com/boats/boat_video.aspx?ID=3279&ref=YT The Ocean Alexander 85 Motoryacht is a serious cruising motoryacht, not a flashy imitation of the real thing designed for ICW ditch digging and cocktails at the dock. Not that she can't be a superb entertaining platform -- she is that as well -- but as for standard equipment she comes with all of the systems necessary to take her owners and guests nearly anywhere they want in comfort and luxury as good as it gets in class. Virtually all of her systems are what we would call "best practices".
KARL had been waiting patiently for me in Panamarina for about half a year. After two weeks of boat work it was time to take him out again and Maria and me sailed KARL to Guna Yala, also called the San Blas Islands. What a beautiful sail, thank you KARL, it feels good to be back!!! Enjoy, ahoy and thanks for watching, Nike & KARL Visit www.whitespotpirates.com for more info about Karl & my journey. --- This is NOT a live documentary! There is a time difference between filming and publishing due to the time it takes to edit and to internet not always being awailable on those little remote palm tree islands :). While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
