The lifting centreboard allows access to shallower anchorages than for fixed keel boats opening up wonderful anchoring opportunities near reefs, rivers and drying out for maintenance. Elegant yet strong, she provides a great feeling of security with her aluminium hull, twin rudders and a lifting centreboard. Bonaire is an ocean cruiser with comforting redundancy; several key systems are duplicated for greater reliability, for example twin rudders, 2 separate autohelms, 2 water tanks, 2 water pumps, foot pump, 5 methods of generating power, 3 integral GPS receivers, 4 methods for showing electronic charts. They left Panama with more than 6 months of food, alcohol and spares without loading into cabin space. In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we spend the last few days with our friends from home onboard. Whilst the lads are out surfing, the girls are tired of standing behind the cameras and make their own fun, living the hammock life! Bonita and Tash are taken to the playful wave of Bengs Bengs to try and get a few amongst the masses. We then have a minor problem where the captain did not prepare the boat properly before leaving... What a good excuse to have a beach bomb fire and cook in the coals with our last night with friends on board before over night sail back to Padang to drop Tash and Teebs off to the airport. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf before our big crossing! We departed Australia in July 2017 and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! After one year of planning and six months back in the US, we finally have the components of our catamaran arriving to us, which means the build can commence! Start your clocks - the two year process starts now!! With the few days before the container arrives, we prepare the tent by marking out where the forms will be placed. This is the base the catamaran will sit on, so we need each spot measured perfectly for the forms to sit on. We place and level bricks in these spots, and because of the slope inside our tent, also level the height of the pads from fore to aft, and port to starboard. Then, the morning we've been waiting for! Our container arrives bright and early on a bitterly cold day in Maryland - and us and our rag tag group of Patrons have only two hours to get all of the pieces out! Welcome back on board everyone after you’ve needed to have a bit of patience since our last full episode! This time join us on our bluewater sailing adventures from Viana do Castelo along the Portuguese coast until Portimão. Here we did some maintenance work on board with some unexpected surprises and explored the scenic limestone landscape of the Algarve.
