The Eye or Brummel splice on single braid rope is one of the most useful skills you can add to your rigging tool kit. When you know the length rope and both end of the rope are free it is simple and easy to do. See the following demonstration for when both end are free. https://youtu.be/q_hT726J0g8 When one end is fixed, you are splicing a really long length of rope or if you are simply working off a spool of rope you need to modify your approach to create the eye splice. The Brummel or Eye splice with one end fixed can be as simple as the version where the ends are not fixed if you follow the three easy steps in this video demonstration. Step 1, measure out your eye size and create two wholes in the rope. Step 2, create two loops in the eyes created in step 1. Step 3, pull the first loop through the second before burying the tail. This version of the eye splice allows you to have eyes at both ends of any length of rope fastening one end to a fixed point as needed. If you need to get the gear to help you complete this splice follow the links below to purchase the tools used in this video demonstration. We've set up 'base camp' here on Isla Bastimentos and we're ready to knock out some BIG adventures...and one on the agenda is learning Spanish. You can get a free 30 day trial of Audible here: http://audible.com/wynns (big thanks to audible, we're proud to work with you guys). s/v Curiosity gets tied up to the fanciest dock we've ever seen, the jungle is full of wildlife and one of the best beaches in Panama is just a short walk away from our hulls. Our first order of business is cleaning the boat...because the tropical mold here seems to grow overnight. Once we're tidy we're heading out to what is supposed to be one of the best SCUBA dives in the Bocas del Toro archipelago. Toss in some beach time, fish tacos & beer and we couldn't ask for more. Based on our first few days here, I think we're going to stick around for a while. Get all the Details of this trip, including links and maps here: http://gonewiththewynns.com/diving-coral-sailing-bocas Thanks to all those who support us by shopping our store, watching our vids and leaving comments...and a huge thanks to our Patreons for the continued support of our productions (& for those wondering we didn't charge our Patreon's for this one because it was sponsored by Audible). With Love, Jason, Nikki, Cleo and Singa (Dale & Justin our Patreon Crew too) Enjoy our vids? Want to give us a virtual high-five? Treat us to an espresso? Or pitch in on a tank of fuel? Fun and mayhem in Panama city when I meet up with Nike and Maria from White spot pirates! Lots of boatie bits as well!! #sailing #girls #pirates Checkout, White spot pirates on Youtube sailingjoana.com Thank you for watching this episode, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe. On Facebook our page is ‘Adventures of an old Seadog’ and there you can find ‘realtime’ up-dates and news. Facebook https://www.facebook.com/adventuresofanoldseadog/ If you’d like to help the Old Seadog Please checkout our Patreon page on the link below. https://www.patreon.com/Adventuresofanoldseadog Contributions to the project can be made at paypal.me/seadogadventures Instagram https://www.instagram.com/adventuresofanoldseadog/ Twitter https://twitter.com/barryperrins Thanks so much for your support, The adventure continues. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Open House information: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/open-house Put your name on a plank: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/merchandise New products hit next week! Sign up for the newsletter to have first dibs on offcuts: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Nearly every piece of wood in Arabella, from the backbone to the deck framing, came to this project as a tree. This means it wasn't ordered from the lumber yard or even from a mill, and that the many imperfections in each tree won't be known until it's milled—not just cut into boards, but put through a thickness planer. When one considers what is useable from a tree, it starts to become very real that our dwindling piles may present new challenges. For deckbeams and other important places where we want strength and rot resistance, we've employed locust for the job. The drawback? Locust grows quickly and wildly, twisting sometimes, the heart of it is sometimes gnarly and unusable for any woodworking project, let alone a boat. We open up the locust pile and discover that we've got to be very careful with how we use the rest. We get to an interesting steaming experiment as we try to figure out how we can use our stock for the locust covering boards. It's been a while since we've scarfed together some planks, but we get to the last two here. THE LAST TWO PLANKS. The sheer strake is of locust, the whiskey plank (the final plank on the boat) is of cedar. The last plank will go onto the boat on May 28th. More on that soon! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat Referral: Need something TotalBoat sells? We broke the boom! First major setback but probably not the last. In this episode we spend a couple of days in Camariñas in Galicia, Spain and then we sail towards Lisbon, Portugal but don't get very far. We broach with the boat outside Cape Finisterre and get an accidental jib on the Hoyt boom and sadly it brakes. Therefore we end up in Baiona and are stuck here for repairs. As we upload this we've been in Baiona for a week and are waiting for the new rigging parts to arrive and to install them. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved in to our sailboat RAN, a one-off aluminium built Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds takes us. We have a big decision to make in this episode and it turns out that we need to rebuild some parts of the interior of RAN. It was a bit nervous we can tell you! But we take a well needed break from boat work and visit the Blue Room and drink green shots with the locals. Enjoy! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Our dinghy has been used almost every day to go to and from shore. After a year of nasty build up, QP decided to clean it. Looking at her cleaning attire I thought I had better take the camera! Just got to love a wet T-shirt.

The Tula Shop - http://tulasendlesssummer.com/shop-tula/ This is how we sail our catamaran. We are no expert sailors and especially not expert sail trimmers but we wanted to show you very generally how WE sail our boat. We have a lot to learn. This was a beautiful sail from Hopetown to Lynyard Cay in the Bahamas with 6-10 knots of wind the whole time. We could have flown our spinnaker but we kept it simple and went with full sails. Living on a boat is a pretty beautiful way of life. Aladino and I consider ourselves quite lucky. We thought we'd show you a full day of our alternative nomadic lifestyle, from dawn to dusk. Plus, I did a little interior boat tour so you can get an idea of what living in such a small space is like. Aaaand, TO OUR SUBSCRIBERS, since I know you'll ask about the violin: I LOVE the fact that you love the violin so much. It really makes me happy, and rest assured, there will be a LOT more violin to come. But I'm also trying to find a balance between making this a sailing channel vs. just a music channel that happens to be on a sailboat. With that in mind, I want to use the violin music as a powerful way to accentuate the beauty of a place, or to set the mood. But I might not use it in EVERY episode. I am open to your constructive ideas and thoughts regarding the sailing vs music balance. As always, a HUGE thank you to our generous, kind, and inspiring patrons. If you're interested in joining our small but exclusive community on patreon to connect with Aladino and I, please check out this link: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=13249792 Check out Maya’s music on Spotify and iTunes! We all need a break from big projects and this time it's Steve's turn! As Alix stays back to look after Arabella and the boathouse to continue work on fitting and installing some knees and short beams. Steve and his partner head off on an adventure out west. With plans to do some climbing, including a seriously obscure traverse of a wild range of peaks. In this episode, you'll get a glimpse of the past (Victoria's knees restored) and the future (wild adventures around the world!). We hope you enjoy the change of pace! Thank you all for watching and supporting! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intro Illustrations by Scott Ouderkirk from Glass Goat (The Wooden Boat Experience) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu02y4RfEyiHqjTCaYpeq4w If you are interesting in supporting/helping here are a few ways: Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg Recurring support via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Original Soundtrack available at benfundis.bandcamp.com FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

Before we went to the boat show, Steve made progress with the galley sink, counter, and stowage area. He broke out some locust and used cherry for the first time—some sweeping, beautiful curves have made a beautiful cubby for needful things where food prep will happen. The Annapolis Sailboat Show, also known as the United States Sailboat Show, was every opportunity we hoped it would be. Along with meeting Brian from s/v Delos in person to say thanks for the inspiration, we met cruisers, followers, Patreon supporters, new friends, and we got to see some of the gear we'll need for systems. Having a good look at some of the things we've only researched from afar was enlightening, as was the opportunity to talk with the people who could speak authoritatively about how that gear is going to fit with the type of cruising we want to do on Arabella. Jason from Mantus Anchors gives a demonstration about the geometry of modern anchors (hey Delta folks, don't get testy! If you like your anchor, keep on keepin on), Steve points out what he likes about the refrigeration system we're going to be custom-building, and we give you a really good look around the sights and sounds of the show... even letting you eavesdrop a bit on a few random conversations. Thank you so much for your support! Keep an eye out for the bonus videos that are coming soon—the newsletter is the best way to ensure you don't miss anything: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Flying high above the clouds and going deep down into the Devil’s Cauldron.  We get a sweet glimpse of this outdoor junkies’ haven. Our final adventure inland here in Ecuador. After Banos we make our way back to Curiosity and high tail it to a new destination. But before we head back to sea level we're exploring this adventure capitol of Ecuador. Banos is full of great food, craft beer and solid mountain adventures. It's totally our kind of place. Hope you enjoy the video as much as we loved capturing it all. As always click over to our website for more details, links, tips and images from our trip. Love from all of us here aboard s/v Curiosity, - Jason, Nikki, Cleo and Singa (and Kate too!) Enjoy our vids? Want to give us a virtual high-five? Treat us to an espresso? Or pitch in on a tank of fuel? Click over to our Tip Jar and see how (most of the ways won’t cost you a dime): https://gonewiththewynns.com/tip-jar ***For the HD Watchers out there, you may notice this video is in 720p. After 4 failed uploads and 8 days of trying to upload our normal 1080p 10-16 bit rate video, we’ve sucked it up and uploaded this video in 720p with a bit rate of 5. The upload took over 36 hours even at this lower quality. Sadly, that’s the price we pay for having to upload from a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Please let me know how the video looks, we’ll be uploading with slow connection speeds for a while as we continue to sail around French Polynesia.*** What are we filming with???
