Our shakedown cruise is officially underway! After crossing Lake Michigan with Kirk’s dad, we arrive in Pentwater, MI where we meet up with the rest of Kirk’s family. It’s our first of many ports of call along Michigan’s west coast we visit over the next few weeks. Pentwater ends up being one of our favorite stops. We hang out at the beach, walk the docks, cookout with Kirk’s family, and watch the sunset over the lake. Next stop: Frankfort. We leave Pentwater before sunrise and sail over 12 hours (60 nautical miles). The sun is out, the winds are light, we fly the spinnaker, and Kirk works from the cockpit. A thunderstorm blows through while we’re at the dock in Frankfort, and we watch another sailboat drag anchor nearly into the dinghy dock. Arriving to remote island communities after 6 days at sea, we settle into island life and play with Manta Rays! https://www.sailingnandji.com In this Episode of Sailing Nandji, after a slow 6 day passage at sea, we arrive to the remote Papua New Guinea group of islands called the Hermit Islands. We spend hours diving and exploring what is below the surface and see lots of marine life. Plenty of sharks and we play with some Manta Rays. We catch plenty of fish and help out the local village residents where we can then head back to sea on an overnight passage to the next chain of islands 80nm away. Arriving to the Ninigo Islands, we are greeted by Oscar and his 12m sailing canoe. He invites us for a sail and off we go sailing a little different than normal!! We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We just arrived to Indonesia after cruising the Pacific islands. This was the lead up to the night where we nearly lost Nandji on the reef... https://www.sailingnandji.com/ This video was filmed early Febuary before the global pandemic really took off. Thailand was one of the first countries affected and we took the adequate precautions early to protect ourselves. In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we have nearly completed the list of jobs we hoped to complete to have Nandji ready for the Indian Ocean. We take our storm sail into the sail maker to get cut smaller as the last thing we want if caught in a gale is to have too much sail up! With Nandji feeling good, we depart Thailand and sail to Langkawi. This is the first sail we complete after weeks of boat work on Nandji. If everything goes smoothly, we would be departing for Sri Lanka with in the week and beginning our voyage across the Indian Ocean. What happens next was not what we had planned at all. This is the day before the disaster. After a great sail for the day we arrive into Koh Rok islands where we pick up a mooring to rest for the night. The glassy smooth water, the sun setting and surrounded by beautiful lush tropical jungle on these small island paradise, it felt like a dream. We had worked so hard to get to this point and the year looked very exciting at this time. If only we knew what was about to happen... With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning as we plan to sail our Nandji girl around the world!! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! Voici le récit de notre Première traversée de l'atlantique sur notre voilier. Suivez le Voyage de Thomas et Pauline un jeune couple qui voyage avec un brise de mer 31 après 2 ans de chantier. Nous sommes partis du Cap vert, plus exactement de la baie de mindelo pour une destination que nous ne connaissions pas. Au milieu de l'atlantique nous avons choisis la Guadeloupe comme point d'arrivé afin de retrouver des amis. Nous avons mis 21 jours pour traverser cet océan. Les 4, 5 premiers jours ont été franchement galère avec un mer difficile et pas de soleil. Puis le temps s'est améliorer et nous avons eu le droit à des paysages magnifiques. La dernière semaine nous avons eu trés peu de vent et nous nous sommes trainés jusqu'a l'arrivé en Guadeloupe.

Our offer was accepted on a Morgan 382! The boat is in fabulous condition, but still needs a bit of work. Fortunately she doesn’t need repairs, just finishing. Kirk and I do kind of like the idea of finishing out the systems ourselves. The woodworking, on the other hand, couldn’t be further above our heads. The level of craftsmanship of the interior (which the owner has spent the last ten years redoing) is way beyond our skill set. We come to an agreement with Jack, the owner/seller: He finishes the woodworking projects before closing, and we finish the rest. With a month to go before closing, Kirk and I aren’t about to sit around twiddling our thumbs. We dive headfirst into our list of projects for the boat. Our biggest items include plumbing the freshwater system and designing a propane system. A few weeks into our work in the yard, we learn some terrible news.
