Hi Guys - In this sailing episode, we drop anchor at Foki, which is close to Fiskardo on Kefalonia Island. We encounter all manner of mayhem with wasps, jellyfish stings and charter boat carnage! It’s not all doom and gloom though as we also had some amazing underwater sea-scooter swims & enjoyed stunning coastal walks to Fiskardo with its picturesque lighthouse. After that we point the compass north and sail up to Lefkada Island, Laura enjoys a bit of freedom time her favourite way "in the nude" before we drop the hook in Nydri at what was arguably one of the busiest bays we’ve ever seen! With the end of summer approaching and boat work dragging on it was time to get out of the bilges and go sail. Go sail the great Hauraki Gulf. We needed to get back to our usual shenanigans of hiking, fishing, diving, and getting a little crazy… We pointed our bow to some of the famous islands such as Great Barrier, Mercury islands, Coromandel peninsula, Rangitoto and Waiheke. Not to mention the big city of Auckland was luring us south. With parks galore and beautiful bays, the cruising in this area cant be beat. Oh and did I mention underwater? The sea is alive! We have never seen so many fish. It was intimidating to be in the thick of things down there. We walked in the lush forests of Great Barrier. Visited wineries on Waiheke. Got a taste of big city life in Auckland before getting away from all in the outer Mercury Islands. But alas, just as we'd settled into the cruising life, we were rudely interrupted when a massive storm rolled through reminding us that winter was on its way and really, it was time for us to go. Time to head north where the palm trees sway. So with the last few errands done we were anxiously waiting for the weather to make a beeline for Fiji. When executed properly, spinnaker takedowns are arguably the most satisfying and most fun maneuvers to be part of. When they are done properly, they’re great. When they go left on you, however, a bad douse can create chaos on the bow as well as cost you time or damage the sail. Here’s some video of two well-executed yet totally different spinnaker douses captured by Lindsay Preece during the Pot of Gold regatta off Fremantle, Western Australia. The wind is in the mid-teens, the water’s flat, and the boats aren’t overlapped so they could use whichever spinnaker drop techniques they wanted. One chose a string drop using a retrieval line, the other a letterbox. In this video you will see these two techniques compared and contrasted. While the Letterbox is the safest spinnaker takedown method for ocean racing, it is not the quickest. This video details the methods of a "String" or "Belly Button" takedown, which is a very quick method for buoy racing. Other techniques that work well for short course races are the "Mexican" or "jibe-drop" and the leeward stretch and blow. Oh yes, once you get a grand prix racer with coffee grinder pedistals you can grind the spinnaker down in 3-5 seconds. But that's something totally different.
