Understanding where the wind is blowing from affects everything on a sailing boat. This video explains how to identify where the wind is blowing from and the correct point of sail to allow the boat to sail correctly. By understanding how your boat is positioned relative to the wind you will be able to spot what point of sail you can achieve for your intended direction. This in turn helps you to identify what to do with the sails to get the best speed.

It’s risk free with Nord’s 30 day money-back guarantee! ✌ For the past couple weeks we’ve waited for a good weather window to sail from the Azores Archipelago to Mainland Portugal. And with less than two months to sail all the way to Malta where we plan to have our baby, this weather window came not a moment too soon. So we’ve said goodbye to the Azores and have begun our week long passage to the European continent. For more review, test, performance data, captain reports and more about the 2016 Boston Whaler 280 Outrage , go to http://www.boattest.com/review/boston-whaler/3481-ref=YT The Boston Whaler 280 Outrage features a new running surface that includes a flat pad at the stern designed to give better hole shot performance, less bow rise on acceleration, and greater WOT speed. With a 23-degree deadrise, she should deliver an exceptional ride in rough water, and she comes fully loaded for fishing. A sun lounge ahead of the console plus and optional cocktail table add versatility. With that table in the lowered position a full sun pad is created.
Part 132 of a series: Sailing Tampa Bay to Key West. Explore Patricio Island, Florida with Ashley. It's a perfect island to practice naturism as people rarely visit. Wild animals are found, and the history of the Banyan Tree as it relates to Harvey Firestone, Henry Ford, and Thomas Edison is discussed.

We started this circumnavigation over four years ago. At the time we thought we’d finish this lap in 2-3 years. Where did the time go? Unlike the the Volvo Ocean Race or the Clipper Round the World crews, we pull over at each and every island. It’s these sort of side explorations that have led us to where we are today. Travelling the world in our house looking to immerse ourselves in cultures and traditions. Well, and then some days are just a mix of boat repair and provisioning.... First I drain the water separator at the CAV pre-filter and then I replace the CAV filter unit. After a successful refilling of the pre-filter unit I change the fine dieselfilter and vent out the system. To make the venting go faster you can fill the finefilter with diesel and put a finger to the vent hole at the fine filter while pumping. The pump will then suck up the diesel from the pre-filter via the created vacuum and on that way it will go much faster. When the diesel has almost reach the top at the vent hole at the finefilter you can pump out the rest of the air and then close the hole with the screw.
The Northern Marine 57 won the People’s Choice Award at the 2022 Anacortes Trawler Fest. She has an asymmetrical layout that gives her more interior living room and has a bow that is ready for nearly any sea. But the secret of this vessel is hidden in her engine room. After 10 days of preparations, the transom is finally ready to get permanently bonded on. Well...this is the moment we'd been waiting for. There were a few more days of odd jobs before it was ready, especially considering that bulkhead 9 had never been bonded to the bridge deck. Sending little 'ole me down into the hulls again, we were able to get the correct spacing when the transom was in place, to bond it to the deck, and then raise it up the following day to glass that down. And then - the bonding of the transom!! We thought we were all pro's at this point, I mean, there'd probably been at least 25 dry fits already. But once the first batch of methacrylate was mixed and we had 40 minutes on the clock, things began to go downhill. Don't worry - it all worked out in the end. But, if you want to see the pitfalls we ran into, make sure to tune in! Enjoy! Much love from Annapolis! A candid interview with Catamaran Specialist Wiley Sharp on the benefits of a Catamaran. Yacht Specs and Prices https://hubs.ly/H0m3NcQ0 Wiley Sharp grew up on the West Coast of Florida where he was exposed to sailing and fishing at a very young age. Sailing and cruising became a mainstay in Wiley’s life after high school when he went to sea to earn his captain’s license. This took him down to Cape Town, South Africa to face some of the toughest seas in the world. http://www.denisonyachtsales.com/2013/02/florida-yacht-broker-wiley-sharp/ After earning his 200-ton license, Wiley went to work in the Bahamas as a charter captain. From there his love for the sea and hard work ethic took him to St. Vincent as an operations manager for a large charter company. After a period of time in St. Vincent he moved to Grenada to open and manage a new charter operation with a fleet of 20 yachts and catamarans. Wiley’s experience gained over thousands of miles at sea, countless hours maintaining boats, and his love for all things boating, makes him a great choice when looking for your next cruising yacht. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. With the children leaving home we decided to sell our house in the UK and buy a boat in Holland. After two years refitting our Hans Christian 48T we have now set off a world voyage. We are retiring early because we want to attempt this voyage in good health and while we're fit and strong enough to really enjoy it. We will have to work a bit as we go until we can draw our pensions and we honestly don't know how well that will work. In our real lives we are journalists and filmmakers so it was only natural for use to document our travels by filming the journey. We aim to produce a professional standard vlog of the whole trip and try to give the viewer a real insight into what it's like to live and travel on a 48 foot sailboat. Our first aim is to sail South. After a winter getting iced in on the Markermeer in the Netherlands Judy insisted on warmer weather! So if you start from Episode 1 you will see us setting off from Eastbourne in the UK and travelling along the South Coast to Plymouth to enter a rally called ARC Portugal. Our first goal is to reach the Mediterranean and that means sailing across the infamous Bay of Biscay. This was a very good test for our boat as the bay lived up to it's fearsome reputation and split the whole fleet with a force 10 storm. Storm Miguel cut through our path and meant we had to run to mainland Spain to escape the massive seas and fearsome winds. Six boats couldn't make it in time and spent several very uncomfortable days at sea. The fleet had several broken boats, but thankfully no injured people. And this was just Episode 2! The excitement continued for the rest of our trip to the Med. Dolphins played in our bow wave, we sampled fantastic local foods and wines, great port in Porto! We found some beautiful anchorages and visit some wonderful historic places like Lisbon in Portugal, Cadiz in Spain and the fascinating port of Gibraltar. We will show you what it's like to winter in the Mediterranean, how much it all costs and give hints and tips on where to go how to save money with your boat and the places you stay. We are also talking to other sailors. After years of broadcasting journalism we know how to get peoples stories and we regularly film other sailors to show their boats and lifestyle as well as ours. We can always learn from others. Our long term plan is to spend a few years in the Mediterranean, on our list of place we want to visit are; Mallorca, Malta, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Italy, Tunisia, to name but a few! When we feel we've seen the best of what the Med has to offer we will cross the Atlantic to the Caribbean, we are hoping we can fit in a trip to the Azores on the way. We have no idea how long we might want to stay in the Caribbean but we do intend to have at least one excursion up the Eastern seaboard of the United States to visit the wonderful sailing areas of Florida, Virginia, sailing Meccas such as Chesapeake bay and hopefully get all the way up to New York. Of course the South Pacific is somewhere every sailor wants to go and will be a real draw for us. So going through the Panama canal will be a real milestone and we really look forward to having the big doors shut behind us and sailing into the biggest sailing playground of all! #sailingfairisle
For additional details pertinent to this video please read the description below. Once you have become proficient at backing your boat in a straight line the next logical progression is to practice backing into your slip. Some of the advantages of your boat being backed into the slip: • Easier departure getaway, you are heading in the right direction • You have a pilothouse view of the marina surroundings • Your cockpit aft is facing the docks so you can be more social • Easier disconnect with shore power if you have it installed aft Backing, like most docking maneuvers, is better when you are operating at slow speeds. Make sure you have your fenders ready and spring line secure as you approach the slip you are going to back into. As the helmsperson it is your charge to position your boat correctly. You can really improve your finesse with a trusted crew member who can relay distances to surrounding obstacles (other vessels and docks). The trusted crew member should provide estimated clearance in measurements, example “Stern is 10 feet away” and not just tell you when to move forward, aft or stop. As the helmsman you need to be ready to change forward and aft directions immediately - but softly, no heavy throttle shifting, just ease the gear shift lever. Patience is important, thrusters can help. The alignment of your bow and stern in relation to being parallel to the dock requires the skipper to continually look forward and aft to adjust for orientation. Parking your boat stern-in has many advantages and is a worthy skill to master. When you are in position and can get your spring line connected the hard work is over. Handling dock lines and tying up at your final destination is the subject of our next video. Shascha had a VERY close call when struck by a dinghy in the anchorage yesterday, she was snorkelling over the anchor as we were resetting it in preparation for the arrival of Tropical Storm DON which was due in just a few short hours... she was INCREDIBLY lucky that she wasn't just one foot closer or the prop would have gone right down her back and ripped her to shreds... This is purely an example of what can happen even when you think everyone is paying attention, it is no fault of anyone, and no blame is being laid, but illustrates a warning to all to exercise extreme caution in the water, whether swimming or snorkelling or driving a dinghy in a busy anchorage. We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted 70ft wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. Six months ago we started our journey in Greece with little sailing experience, figuring things out as we go, not really knowing what we're doing. Our goal is to circumnavigate the world via the wind, always being surrounded by the ocean. Sailboat life is super different from land life and can be pretty rough at times. see the little things is the documentary of our endeavour of simplifying life, decelerating pace, and practicing mindfulness. I might be a little sadistic but one of the things I love most about sailing the world is the raw challenge of it. I thrive on battling against waves, weather, as well as installing and maintaining boat systems. But other than the raw challenge there is another big reason that we live this lifestyle and it’s even on our logo. We want to know our world. We want to experience and learn from the most unique and fascinating places on the planet. Now we’ve been hunkered down for the winter at D-marin, Turgutreis in Turkey for a couple months now. For most of that time we’ve been getting the boat ready for our next adventure and in just a few weeks we’re going to set sail to explore the south west corner of this country before starting to make our way out of the Mediterranean and into the Atlantic ocean. But Turkey is a big country and it’s home to a handful of bucket list attractions that are far from our sailing itinerary. So this week we’re going on a road trip to hit up a couple of these amazing places. And what we find will truly change our perspective in ways we never imagined. Enjoying Modern Life? Thank A Machinist! - Episode 244 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat
Join us for a visit in a marine propeller shop, where a CNC lathe and other specialized tools are used to machine our propeller shaft. At Accutech, https://accutechmarine.com/, we walk you through the process, and show off some other very cool things they're able to do in the propeller shop. We also hang the rudder for the first time in its place, and get to see what it all looks like. It's a big reveal! As is the view from the inside as the sealed, faired, painted, routed, then painted-again overhead of the cabin trunk is put into place on the cabin house. Then the cabin trunk is fiberglassed, effectively making what was once strips of cedar, inappropriate for planking or other parts of the boat, one solid piece of waterproof, composite material. It is now monocoque—the outside of the soft cedar has been transformed into a structurally hard, durable, easily maintained surface. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat Referral: Please consider using our Total Boat referral code—they send us 10% of your purchase to support our videos!
