In 2013 we were making our way up the Oregon coast when our friends the RV Geeks reached out and told us “you gotta stop by Waldport, we built a website for McKinley’s campground and they’d love to have a video to share about crabbing.” We did a little research on the campground and it turned out they sell shellfish licenses, rent boats, crab rings and everything else we’d need to “do it ourselves”. We were hooked on the idea and we promptly directed our RV north. The Oregon coast is simply breathtaking and it was our first crabbing experience and it was perfect! Thanks to McKinley's for hosting us and we can honestly say this small family owned park is worth a visit, especially if you like crabbing, clamming, nature and Rogue Beer (their HQ is just up the road!). BoatUS Magazine's contributing editor Lenny Rudow shows you the basics of reading a nautical chart for navigation. While he demonstrates using a paper chart, the same principles can be applied to reading digital charts on a chartplotter. Lenny explains what the different colors on a nautical chart mean as well as water depth, buoys and channel markers, latitude and longitude, reading nautical charts symbols, prominent features on land, compass rose, nautical chart scales, and more. There are so many things you can learn from looking at a nautical chart, like the names of bodies of water and locations, bridge heights, and more. Remember, though, that things can -- and do -- change, so using common sense and watching what's around you is important as well. In this video we provide you with some insights to our lovely boat, Dory Man -a Hallberg Rassy 352 from 1986. Although not the newest nor most modern, it still provides us with all we need: safety, comfort, fun & lots of smiles. We explore why a 35 footer is in our humble view the ideal boat for long time cruising for 2 people on a low budget. Lower maintenance, lower running coast, more fun! Thanks for Watching! Boat Builder Bob Emser demonstrates how to build a boat grate. Generally grates are used on the sole of a yacht, the walnut grate in this case is designed as a aft hatch for the Haven 12 1/2. The detailed crosshatching of wood in a beautiful lattice pattern can be quite challenging. Follow along as Bob shows how he designed and constructed the aft hatch. In addition the seat for the boat are secured by using a classic Herreshoff method. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” Bob Emser As an advocate for backyard boat builders I offer a free 30 minute chat about your project. Tigertail II is a great example how Hunter Marine set the pace for center cockpit sailboats. The 42 Passage was built from 1990 and ended its production in 1998. The boat had a long run with almost no changes to the boat. Some say the 42 Passage is a better boat than the 420 Hunter. I agree. The boat is an amazing sailing boat even with all the cruising gear loaded aboard. The boat has a 103 PHRF rating and motors easily at 8 knots. It is built to go cruising and is a very comfortable live aboard with lots of storage room. Tigertail II has had many upgrades by the recent owner and showes very well. This is a must see boat, clean and priced to sell. For additional information please contact the listing agent Ian Van Tuyl at any time day or night. I look forward to hearing from you. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! We are sailors! Our sailboat is sailing on the water and the travel adventure is really kicking in. We have set sail without a captain! The captain we were going to have help deliver the boat flaked out on us so we are on our own. Just the two of us and our trusty sailboat Dodi. It is happening we live on a sailboat. This is a big step toward the liveaboard cruising lifestyle. We have officially left the Boatyard and are underway headed for Pelican Bay on our way to longboat key, FL. There were a lot of first for us, first time in a lock, first time navigating and overnight trip, and our first night on the hook, after that we set the anchor for the first time! We are living on a yacht! This is The Boat Life. Nic Morganti and Melissa Auman are moving onto a sailboat. The plan was sell everything, buy a boat, live on a boat, and travel and explore the Caribbean and the world while living aboard! Simple plan, but lots to learn and do along the way. Join our adventure as we sail away, live on a sailboat, and explore life aboard. Thanks for watching! The BIG bulkheads are going in!! And now we have walls and doors that make up the shower in our owner's hull. This next episode I love for two reasons. One, is I finally got around to adding a BUNCH of images and renders for you to see how the boat should look as we progress. The second is.. The BIG bulkheads are going in!! And now we have walls and doors that make up the shower in our owner's hull. A very big feat for us because not only do we begin to see how the different areas in the catamaran are beginning to lay out, but we also managed to do this with our own four hands. A task we'd been somewhat dreading for weeks (just the thought of getting monstrous boards of foam into place), but it all worked out with a little team work. Tune in to see how things are shaping up! We hope you enjoy! Much love from Annapolis! This is a walk through of our custom built aluminum boat, a Trisalu 37, while we are 4 months into her renovation. She is undergoing a complete refit where we are replacing the entire interior and as well as fixing up the exterior.

If you’ve been following our sailing journey since the beginning you’ll know that we've been living on an all electric sailboat for 3 years, Saoirse. Meaning, she doesn’t have a diesel engine or a propane stove. We get most of our power from the sun via our 700 watts of solar panels. When we first started we didn’t know what to expect, what we were going to like, or if any of it was going to work. After almost 3 years and 5200 nautical miles sailed, we have put our system through a good trial period and we are going to tell you about it. Specifically, what we like and what we would like to change. Bringing Yabá from wreck to dreamy! Episode 91 In this episode we attempt to add a fiberglass layer on top of the roof of the superstructure of our wooden boat. Things don't go as planned and we have to face frustration. 👉 SUBSCRIBE to not miss out on the new episodes: https://bit.ly/3dI3hBn YOU CAN SUPPORT OUR PROJECT: 👉 By becoming a patron - join to unlock exclusive content: https://www.patreon.com/sailingyaba 👉 Through Paypal donations: https://bit.ly/3kR4Ezo or sailingyaba@gmail.com 👉 By wearing our products: https://sailingyaba.creator-spring.com We are forever grateful to everyone that is living our dream with us ♥️ 🇧🇷 Legendas em Português em todos os episódos! 🇪🇸 Subtítulos en español en todos los episodios! 💙 Who are we? We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. More about us: 👉 About us + Q&A https://youtu.be/TldDlohjwTs 👉 our website with more info about the project http://www.sailingyaba.com 💙 Massive thanks to our amazing team of carpenters that never let us down and continue to amaze us at every step of the process: Toninho, Zeca, Hélio, Claiton, William, Nezo, Nico, Beto and Luiz. #BoatLife before the Pandemic: As we explore the remote atolls of the Tuamotus, the stress of that remoteness comes home. We attempt to find food, we give you a tour of our nav table, and we explain how we do our watch schedule. We learn how to use our camera (finally), and Elizabeth battles with some personal issues before flying home for a week. It's a jam packed episode! NEW FAQ PAGE: Visit here for Frequently Asked Questions!: https://www.the-sailing-family.com/faq VACAY www.VacayStyle.com is Elizabeth's resort-wear start-up that she formed in 2016. We manage to keep the company going from the boat, but it does require that she fly home twice a year to source new fabrics, choose patterns and meet with her factory and pattern makers. Everything is made in San Francisco. Check it out! NAV TABLE Our Navigation table computer is a 12 volt PC made by Entec out of France. It runs Windows and a software called TimeZero that accepts the boats NMEA data to display it real-time on screen. We have wind, radar and AIS alarms that probably do a better job than a human when looking for objects at night - so we try to nap with a 20 minute timer when we can. However, when conditions call for it (wind shifts, other boats, near shore, etc) then we hold a two hour on and two hour off watch schedule. CAMERA GEAR: We use a Sony A7iii camera for most of the footage with a Rode mini wind mic. We also use our iPhone 11 when away from the boat. The time-lapse imagery and underwater video is from our GoPro8. And our drone shots are done with a DJI Mavic Pro 2. All editing is done with FCPX. FAQ Check out our new FAQ page on our website: www.the-sailing-family.com POSTING LIVE UPDATES ON SOCIAL: https://www.instagram.com/the_sailing_family/ https://www.facebook.com/the-sailing-family-voyage/ ----------------- ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on our "dream boat," a performance catamaran named "Archer." Ten years ago, before kids, we sailed a Lagoon 380 named "Honeymoon" halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences with family and friends via YouTube, and by happenstance created one of the earliest sailing channels still posting. We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with our kids. OUR BOAT is a Ferrari red Outremer 51 performance cruising catamaran. We chose this boat as it has been specifically designed for the purpose of bluewater sailing. It was designed and built to withstand the stress of "sailing multiple times around the world safely and in comfort." And yes, she's nice on the eyes too. OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal. At the time of posting this we have dealt with the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a cateogry 5 cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising again in Covid Free Australia. PLEASE COMMENT!: As a "family channel," we are required to actively monitor all comments, but we still want to hear from you. Tell us what you think! THANKS for watching all.
