Boat Builder Bob Emser demonstrates how to build a boat grate. Generally grates are used on the sole of a yacht, the walnut grate in this case is designed as a aft hatch for the Haven 12 1/2. The detailed crosshatching of wood in a beautiful lattice pattern can be quite challenging. Follow along as Bob shows how he designed and constructed the aft hatch. Tigertail II is a great example how Hunter Marine set the pace for center cockpit sailboats. The 42 Passage was built from 1990 and ended its production in 1998. The boat had a long run with almost no changes to the boat. Some say the 42 Passage is a better boat than the 420 Hunter. I agree. The boat is an amazing sailing boat even with all the cruising gear loaded aboard. The boat has a 103 PHRF rating and motors easily at 8 knots. It is built to go cruising and is a very comfortable live aboard with lots of storage room. Tigertail II has had many upgrades by the recent owner and showes very well. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! We are sailors! Our sailboat is sailing on the water and the travel adventure is really kicking in. We have set sail without a captain! The captain we were going to have help deliver the boat flaked out on us so we are on our own. Just the two of us and our trusty sailboat Dodi. It is happening we live on a sailboat. This is a big step toward the liveaboard cruising lifestyle. We have officially left the Boatyard and are underway headed for Pelican Bay on our way to longboat key, FL. There were a lot of first for us, first time in a lock, first time navigating and overnight trip, and our first night on the hook, after that we set the anchor for the first time! #BoatLife before the Pandemic: As we explore the remote atolls of the Tuamotus, the stress of that remoteness comes home. We attempt to find food, we give you a tour of our nav table, and we explain how we do our watch schedule. We learn how to use our camera (finally), and Elizabeth battles with some personal issues before flying home for a week. It's a jam packed episode! We manage to keep the company going from the boat, but it does require that she fly home twice a year to source new fabrics, choose patterns and meet with her factory and pattern makers. Everything is made in San Francisco. Check it out! NAV TABLE Our Navigation table computer is a 12 volt PC made by Entec out of France. It runs Windows and a software called TimeZero that accepts the boats NMEA data to display it real-time on screen. We have wind, radar and AIS alarms that probably do a better job than a human when looking for objects at night - so we try to nap with a 20 minute timer when we can. However, when conditions call for it (wind shifts, other boats, near shore, etc) then we hold a two hour on and two hour off watch schedule. CAMERA GEAR: We use a Sony A7iii camera for most of the footage with a Rode mini wind mic. We also use our iPhone 11 when away from the boat. The time-lapse imagery and underwater video is from our GoPro8. And our drone shots are done with a DJI Mavic Pro 2. All editing is done with FCPX. Ten years ago, before kids, we sailed a Lagoon 380 named "Honeymoon" halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences with family and friends via YouTube, and by happenstance created one of the earliest sailing channels still posting. We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with our kids. OUR BOAT is a Ferrari red Outremer 51 performance cruising catamaran. We chose this boat as it has been specifically designed for the purpose of bluewater sailing. It was designed and built to withstand the stress of "sailing multiple times around the world safely and in comfort." And yes, she's nice on the eyes too. OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal. At the time of posting this we have dealt with the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a cateogry 5 cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising again in Covid Free Australia. Hi Guys - In this sailing episode, we drop anchor at Foki, which is close to Fiskardo on Kefalonia Island. We encounter all manner of mayhem with wasps, jellyfish stings and charter boat carnage! It’s not all doom and gloom though as we also had some amazing underwater sea-scooter swims & enjoyed stunning coastal walks to Fiskardo with its picturesque lighthouse. After that we point the compass north and sail up to Lefkada Island, Laura enjoys a bit of freedom time her favourite way "in the nude" before we drop the hook in Nydri at what was arguably one of the busiest bays we’ve ever seen! Tranquil bay and Vliho provide great shelter and Nidri offers lots todo including great pool bars to relax by and traditional greek taverns that offer nice food. With the end of summer approaching and boat work dragging on it was time to get out of the bilges and go sail. Go sail the great Hauraki Gulf. We needed to get back to our usual shenanigans of hiking, fishing, diving, and getting a little crazy… We pointed our bow to some of the famous islands such as Great Barrier, Mercury islands, Coromandel peninsula, Rangitoto and Waiheke. Not to mention the big city of Auckland was luring us south. With parks galore and beautiful bays, the cruising in this area cant be beat. Oh and did I mention underwater? The sea is alive! We have never seen so many fish. It was intimidating to be in the thick of things down there. We walked in the lush forests of Great Barrier. Visited wineries on Waiheke. Got a taste of big city life in Auckland before getting away from all in the outer Mercury Islands. But alas, just as we'd settled into the cruising life, we were rudely interrupted when a massive storm rolled through reminding us that winter was on its way and really, it was time for us to go. Time to head north where the palm trees sway. So with the last few errands done we were anxiously waiting for the weather to make a beeline for Fiji. Designed by an naval architect to comfortably circumnavigate the world, and yet, be built by the average person in a residential garage/shed. When executed properly, spinnaker takedowns are arguably the most satisfying and most fun maneuvers to be part of. When they are done properly, they’re great. When they go left on you, however, a bad douse can create chaos on the bow as well as cost you time or damage the sail. Here’s some video of two well-executed yet totally different spinnaker douses captured by Lindsay Preece during the Pot of Gold regatta off Fremantle, Western Australia. The wind is in the mid-teens, the water’s flat, and the boats aren’t overlapped so they could use whichever spinnaker drop techniques they wanted. One chose a string drop using a retrieval line, the other a letterbox. In this video you will see these two techniques compared and contrasted. While the Letterbox is the safest spinnaker takedown method for ocean racing, it is not the quickest. This video details the methods of a "String" or "Belly Button" takedown, which is a very quick method for buoy racing. Other techniques that work well for short course races are the "Mexican" or "jibe-drop" and the leeward stretch and blow. Oh yes, once you get a grand prix racer with coffee grinder pedistals you can grind the spinnaker down in 3-5 seconds. But that's something totally different.
