In this episode the boys start fairing this particular section of the hull of Parlay, using gelcoat mixed with polyester resin and cabosil filler. This then has to be sanded with long boards to keep the shape of the hull. But we keep at it, with a smile on our faces, as we look forward to seeing her back in the water!! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. This is a top level, simple DIY list that will help you quickly determine if a sailboat is worthy of being on your potential wish list. You've got your budget, your place to moor and store your boat, now you just need your dream machine to make it all come to fruition. You have 5 sailboats within your budget and you don't want to hire a marine surveyor to look at everyone of them. So what do you do? You get out there and start kicking the proverbial wheels, or jack stands, as it were. You have the know-how and this list will keep you focused. Grab a large screwdriver, a notepad, a flashlight, and a camera and get out there! Sailing season is coming right up - don't miss another one! Below is more or less what we go over in the video. EXTERIOR: Check for blisters Inspect keel joint (if not encapsulated) Ensure prop shaft isn't loose Confirm rudder alignment with keel (sight down from behind the rudder toward trailing edge of keel) ON DECK: Conduct tap test with screwdriver butt Assess deck and lazarette cleanliness Look for excessive crazing and stress cracks around stanchions Inspect standing rigging (if mast is up, on deck, or near the boat) BELOW DECK: Verify engine access and components (oil filter, dipstick, etc.) Check for excessive staining on sole floor Examine staining around ports and hatches Assess cleanliness and odors Inspect bilge, keel bolts, stringers, and framing Examine chainplates Do doors close and latch as they should?

Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. In this weeks episode, we sail to a place called Playa Venao in Panama, to surf and have a good time, but end up having a nightmare when our dinghy drags its anchor and ends up flipping in the surf. We scramble to save it, and end up with it on the beach in the middle of nowhere. Luckily, someone comes to the rescue with a pickup truck, and we manage to drive it over to the calm side of the bay to see if it will start.... We set off on our first sail in the Gulf of Mexico! After a day trip to Pensacola through the GICW (Gulf Intracoastal Waterway) with Kirk’s pops, we visit Destin via car to inquire about Destin pass. We were keen on stopping with the boat because it seemed like a fun town to explore, but the pass is notoriously shallow with shifting sands.
