Between a meeting with our design team and a tour of the manufacturing halls, the two-time world champion decided to reach for a new podium … at the Sunreef GP. Nobody knows how and when, but at some point, the Sunreef shipyard turned into a racing circuit. This episode was filmed in 01 / 2021. — Welcome to Untie The Lines! my name is Nike, I bought an aluminum 37 foot sailboat in Panama in 2013 that I named KARL. I spent a good year refitting it, mostly by myself and with the help of awesome friends, and then (mostly) solo sailed my sailboat around the western Caribbean. In 2016, I crossed the Panama Canal, had a major engine break down, a near sinking experience and a serious foot injury which got me stuck along the Pacific coast of Central and South America. In this Episode, I explore the beaches around Concholon Bay (Pearl Islands, Panamá), start to paint some new TotalBoat non skid on my deck and take up anchor to solo sail to the next bay. It’s a short sail of only 10nm that start off with a beautiful breeze from the stern but when I have to start heading more upwind, the wind dies down on me. This week we take a brief sabbatical from sailing and adventure into the rainforest of Guadeloupe. We spent 2 days hiking a 35km portion of the GRG1 trail (La trace des Alizés) up the side of La Soufrière (the Volcano) and back down to sea level. The hike was incredibly challenging but the scenery was well worth it. The pain in our legs will pass, but sleeping in the clouds and the smell of volcanic steam are two things we'll never forget. To this updated 2025 full in-depth tour of my beautiful 1984 Beneteau Idylle 11.5m or 38' long sloop rigged monohull sailboat. My humble home upon the sea. Six and a half years ago, I went up and down the East coast of the USA looking for a sailboat to buy. With a considerable amount of help and advice from my sailing mentor Don. I purchased this sailboat in Cape Cod Massachusetts for $23,000.00. At that time the boat was on the hard with it's mast down in an old boatyard miles and miles from the ocean. It was hard to imagine that it would be the boat for me. But after about a month of working with the seller and his broker. We splashed the boat, stepped the mast and sea trialed her. After that, I was confident this sailboat was what I was looking for. But it would take several years and a couple major refits of improvements and upgrades to make the boat what it is now. A boat that's value is far greater than when I started. As is it's practical usability which you can see though my online channels. From this boat I love to explore and go on adventures wherever my anchor rests. The boats name perfectly explains what it represents: -Adventure: (An unusual and exciting or daring experience. Or to engage in daring or risky activity.) -Borne: (Carried or transported by the thing specified.) -Adventureborne = "What brings me to the adventure." This is a humble sailboat. But that's an upside. Because unlike most catamarans and other larger vessels. This sailboat is highly affordable and has an extremely low cost to maintain. Allowing me to be able to sail and cruise full time. Without worry of breaking the bank. On top of that, my main expense out here in the Bahamas would be food. But more than a decade of spearfishing around the world has given me the capability to consistently harvest from the ocean around my sailboat through freedive spearfishing. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. After living in Isla Mujeres, Mexico for almost half a year while working hard to beef up our cruising kitty, we sort of forgot what it felt like to cruise! This trip to Bahia de Ascensión (Mexico) helped remind us about the ups and downs of cruising and passage making. We still have a lot to learn! New situations like navigating throught a narrow channel to reach a crazy fuel dock, trouble shooting the engine while underway, deciding when to reef and adjust sails for squalls in the distance and anchoring at night still exhaust us and stress us out, but we're hoping these parts of life will start to feel second-nature once we're cruising full time! We show you a slice of our San Diego lives, and talk about why we decided to leave our beach cottage in California — for life aboard a sailboat. Our search for the right sailboat took years: We researched thousands of sailboats online, saw hundreds in person. We made some crazy decisions, like driving 10 hours through the desert in Mexico to see a catamaran, and moving from Southern California to the Midwest in the dead of winter to get the right boat in the right cruising grounds. A nice combination of our final sailing in Turkey and a family living on a sailboat. Although Gocek & Fethiye are quite busy and not our preferred places to be, we did enjoy our time here very much. This is also part of living on the sea and we had to wait a couple of weeks on deliveries and we hoped Greece would open up for us. But no, so we got our new dinghy which is quite a necessary element in our family sailing around the world adventure. She is temporary but the size fits perfectly with our sailing yacht Beneteau 57, we sailed nicely through the bays and we did find some spots secluded and where we could be alone. This experience was a big learning curve for us and has helped identify the way we solve problems as a team under pressure. Just as we were getting so close to the water, we've added an extra month to our work yard sentence. After having used Petit 2 part epoxy top coat paint last year and realizing we were having a terrible problem of it chipping and peeling off on us, we knew we needed to make the switch to something better. After viewing a few jobs in our work yard, we decided that AWL GRIP would be the best choice for us. Join us as I spend a little over two weeks stripping off our old paint down to the primer, and Matt begins work on our cockpit seats using a Brazilian teak called Cumaru. Cheers from the work yard! In this episode we take the risky sail from Cayman Islands, to Panama, through the pirate waters off the coast of Honduras and Nicaragua. Friends of ours have even been chased here, but scared them off with their gun. We do not carry arms so took a more conservative approach of keeping a distance of 120 miles off the coast, however still saw fishing boats, which are essentially what the pirates are, opportunist fishermen... This has to be an edgy and innovative weapon, fast and furious.” With this brief to create something beyond exceptional, NGONI proves to be luxurious, yet fast and furious, excitingly different yet comfortable, and beautifully built. Her sleek and edgy exterior conceals a host of innovative engineering to meet the challenges of combining a huge, powerful, and advanced rig with a slender and easily driven hull. The reverse sheer which now defines NGONI began as creative expression but soon became clear that it was key to structural stiffness. The rounded plumb bow with flush deck furlers is not just striking to the eye, but also creates less wind disturbance to the leading edge of the headsail than a conventional bow. Featuring a carbon composite rig, NGONI’s mast reaches a towering 75m/247’, with an 853m2 / 9,182ft2 square-top mainsail. Despite her huge sail area, NGONI has a manual steering system without power assistance that is light yet firm, responsive, and adjustable – resulting in one of the largest advanced composite rudders ever built. The sleek superstructure is constructed from double curved, moulded glass at the highest level of current technology. The glass windows/windbreakers are electrically controlled.
