Once again Riviera have produced a Sport Yacht that will accommodate a large family for the typical summer day boating activities and keep you happy right up to extended offshore trips to new and far away destinations. This brand clearly excels at building ultra high quality yet super functional boats that are perfectly suited to harsh environments that include temperature extremes and true ocean conditions. I found the 4600 to look and feel like a true Sports Yacht and she punches well above her weight when it comes to useability and practical design that will make owner operators lives easier when out on the water. This is a boat for serious boaters. A few sets remain, get your A2A ornaments here: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/merchandise Bob Emser's channel, building Victoria the tender: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheArtofBoatBuilding Robbie Doyle is an engineer, and inductee into the Sailing Hall of Fame, founder of Doyle Sails, and is designing and building Arabella's sails. We are thankful. We are proud. In this video, we visit the Doyle Sails loft in Salem, Massachusetts, and hear what he's doing for our rig. He's a professional sailmaker who's undaunted about working modern shapes and materials into this classic rig. He's updating and modernizing it using computational fluid dynamics to nail down the best shape for a cruising boat with big travel plans. And yeah, there are topsails. We see Doyle Sails' sewing machines, production floor, and the program in which Robbie Doyle is designing Arabella's sails. Since the "sail bones are connected to the spar bones", our spar builder came along, too. Keith Mitchell, @shipwrightskills-keithmitchell, talks about his thoughts on the benefits of the gaff rig we'll have on this DIY wooden sailboat. He has been preparing for the work that he will do in Vermont at his shop. On this episode we replace an escape hatch that could have sunk our boat! It comes from an issue with the escape hatches that have been know to detach from the sailboat hull, usually causing the boat to sink and we fixed it just in time! We have know about this issue for a while now, and its something that has worried us considerably but also one that we have been quite unable to address until now. It requires us to be in one place long enough for the company to send the replacement hatches to, as well as that place big enough that the company in Europe can send them to. THEN, once we receive them, we have to EITHER haul the boat out of the water - what we wanted to do originally, but costs us nearly $1000- OR find a safe spot that is calm enough to complete the work safely from underneath the yacht. It finally all came together in Mexico, we stopped sailing long enough to receive the hatches, and tied up to a nice marina in La Paz. Here the water was calm and conditions were good to complete this arduous task... but not all the stars lined up perfectly and it took us far more work than it should have to get this troublesome job complete. But after teaming up for a full day, busting some knuckles, calling some experts, and a little but of cursing, we finally got it removed and swapped out for the recalled replacement. FINALLY! Thanks for watching and DON'T FORGET TO SUBSCRIBE!!!! CONSIDER BECOMING ONE OF OUR PATREONS REMEMBER...you are not supporting our lifestyle but more or less enjoying a really good show. So pop the popcorn, dim the lights, and sit back enjoy the show! Sailboat tech: How does a marine autopilot work? (Featuring the Raymarine evolution & EV1 sensor) // Ryan’s tech corner #7 In this new episode of Ryan’s tech corner, we explore autopilots. What exactly is a marine autopilot and how does it work? What is the difference between a wind vane and an electronic autopilot? What to think about before buying an autopilot for your boat? As we purchased a brand new Raymarine Evolution autopilot ahead of our coming Atlantic crossing, we figured this would be a great opportunity to demystify our third crew member, and explain how we go from pressing a button to our autopilot holding its course. There are a lot of steps to each of the things we do on Arabella, especially in the interior, and between those multiple paint coats drying, that epoxy curing, and intense reading about 12 V DC electrical systems, there's plenty to do around and about to prepare for winter. Last week we re-covered the bottom of the boat shed and hooked Akiva up with a new platform, this week we do a few other important chores. We don't often get a chance to show what's involved with caring for the tools we use, and testing, flushing, and replacing coolant is a part of that practice of care when it comes to the big thickness planer. Big Aaron comes by with one of his Foxfire books, looking for banjo material. Little Aaron gets behind the wheel of the farm truck, this time with a little more finesse than the last time. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. No matter where you boat, if you have an outboard motor, the best thing you can do to help prolong its life and keep it in good running shape is to flush it with freshwater after every use. This is especially important in saltwater or brackish water. But even if you boat in freshwater lakes or rivers, you still need to do this important maintenance task every time because it's easy to suck up mud, grit, and other contaminants. Always follow your outboard boat engine manufacturer's recommendations for how to perform this maintenance, but generally it's pretty much the same other than amount of time to run freshwater through the system. Some companies say 5 minutes, others say 10. Generally more is better. Some outboard engines have flushing ports, which make the job very simple. If your outboard motor doesn't have a port, you'll need to use earmuffs, which slip over the intakes and deliver freshwater from a hose into the motor. For this, you'll need to start the engine, but make sure to leave it in neutral and don't touch the throttle. One important tip: Don't hook up the hose and walk away to do other tasks. It's critical to ensure the water continues to flow and the earmuffs don't shift while doing this, otherwise it may damage your outboard. The sailboat hunt is on! We drive from San Diego, California to Guaymas, Mexico to see a catamaran named Imi Loa. We’ve had our eye on this boat for a little while, and have been in contact with the sellers — they assure us this cat is ready to go cruising. This is the first boat we go to see in person that we can actually buy… if we want to. After years of paying down debts, saving up, acquiring passive income and structuring our work lives to be more mobile-friendly, we’re financially ready to buy a boat. The road trip is an experience itself. We’ve been to Baja and the Yucatan Peninsula, but not yet anywhere in mainland Mexico, so we’re stoked to see a new part of the country, and the Sea of Cortez. We also take another catamaran, Cerita, out for a sea trial in Oceanside, CA. Cerita is much more minimalist than Imi Loa, but proves to be in much better condition. By getting up close and personal with these catamarans we start to figure out what we really want and need in a boat to live aboard. Hope you enjoy! Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boatbuilding commands. Tour of the living space aboard the Antares 44i catamaran

learningthelines

This week we're touring another sailboat that's on the opposite end of the spectrum of what we normally look at, but in a different way this time. This is an Outremer 45, which is the same boat model as the famous La Vagabonde. We're not touring it simply because it's famous, but because recently we've become very interested in performance cruising catamarans. The reason for this is because they just work better as platforms for electric boats. They have a lot to offer including but not limited to better sailing performance, lighter displacements (but still just as strong), more efficent hulls, more living space, and more room for equipment related to cruising. Buying a complete performance cruising is a long way from possible for us in the near future, but we've pretty much decided we're going to DIY our own performance cruising catamaran from scratch, starting a year or two from now. Yes it will be expensive. Yes it will take a long time. Yes, we will film it ALL. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you make an informed decision on your next boat with this tool: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more information on Outremer Yachts feel free to reach out to Terry Grimbeek with Just Catamarans. terry@justcatamarans.net https://justcatamarans.net/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way. Please leave a like and comment if you've enjoyed the video, and subscribe if you haven't already.

After almost 2 years in the Atlantic we will arrive to a new ocean. The biggest ocean in the world, the Pacific! Together with our linehandlers we transit one of the wonders of the modern world, the Panama Canal. Our friends on SY Carpe Mare have written a guide with all the information about the canal transit (find the document in the bottom of the post): http://www.carpe-mare.se/2018/01/12/panama-canal/ This is the guide book we use: http://amzn.to/2HvilA9 We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. WANT MORE? We're building this shed ourselves—just me, my wife, and my dad—with no prior construction experience. And this week, the pressure’s on. The rain keeps coming, and without a roof, the floor we worked so hard to build is getting soaked again and again. We need to get this roof on—but since we’re learning as we go, everything takes longer than it should. In this episode, we face the reality of slow progress, constant weather delays, and the very real possibility that we won’t get the roof on in time to protect the shed. But in the middle of all that, we’re also learning to slow down for what matters most—like taking a full day off to spend time with our daughter. This is Part 3 of our DIY Shed Build—the first structure we’re building on our raw land in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. It’s the first big step toward turning this forested hillside into a long-term home for our family. If you're into building from scratch, mountain living, and raising kids with dirt on their shoes—we'd love to have you along for the ride. Subscribe so you don’t miss what happens next. In February 1944 the United States launched Operation Hailstone - often referred to as Japan's Pearl Harbor - a surprise naval air attack that lasted 3 days. It decimated the Japanese fleet. More than 230 aircraft were destroyed and more than 50 ships sunk. It unintentionally created one of the best wreck diving destinations in the world. We dove here on the 74th anniversary of the attack. Many lives were lost a sobering week of scuba diving for sure! Thanks for watching.

Episode 29 In this episode we are celebrating a huge milestone: our last frames being built and installed! www.sailingyaba.com ༄ We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted 70ft wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. I am a 27-year-old female solo sailor beginning my circumnavigation. My boat is a 27 foot sloop named Gecko. Follow me on my journey as I learn about heavy-weather sailing, the trials of being solo, and my adventures in paradise. This week I sail overnight from St. John’s bashing into headwinds to arrive at St. Martin the following evening. Follow my weekly blog on: Windhippie.com For daily photo updates and boating life, check out my instagram page: @boatlizard Thanks for watching and subscribing!
