Painting my 50 foot sailboat this time not alone! Oh, and since I've done it once before, I have just a bit of experience lol. With all Eva has been through, we felt she deserved some love. So we cleaned up the stern with some fresh gelcoat last week, and this week we get her ready for some new bottom paint. We have been lucky enough to be hauled out at @nanajuanamarina1932 Nanajuana Marina and we hired them to take off the old bottom paint for us. It wasn't cheap, but they did good work. And since we physically couldn't work for a while due to sickness, having them working on the boat for a few days limited the downtime. We are putting our new bottom paint at an educated guess location based on where the staining on the gelcoat. We scuffed up the gelcoat, cleaned it, and slapped on some new barrier coat. And to comply with recoat windows and whatnot, we slapped on the first coat of bottom paint....and this time, Eva's bottom's gone back to black. Love you all, be safe be good! Bringing Yabá from wreck to dreamy! Episode 31 In this episode we are putting a smile on Yabá's face! We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted 70ft wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. To be honest with you the idea of living and traveling on a sailboat with our newborn baby kind of scares me. All of the risks that we’ve accepted as part of our lifestyle are now being transferred to our baby girl. But even beyond the obvious dangers of sailing offshore and living off the grid, I also wonder how we’re going to deal with the simple challenges that all families face but in a much smaller space and without so many modern conveniences and sources of support. So here in Malta, a small island nation in the middle of the Mediterranean, we’re taking some time to get to know our little Isabella, to learn how to be parents on a boat, and to work on boat improvements that will make our life aboard easier and safer once we do start traveling again. In this episode, we navigate through the shallow channel in Puntarenas to get to the Costa Rica Yacht Club. We don't typically use marina or moorings but the sailing in Costa Rica has us a bit warn out and we need access to land for a few days. After seeing the town and filling up on fuel, water and groceries we experience yet another struggle cruising in Costa Rica. The checkout process is absurd and ends up being a couple day process. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Over 1 year ago we dropped propane and went fully electric with an induction stove and electric oven, all powered by Lithium batteries. In this video we do a 1 year review of how it's worked aboard Delos and answer these questions: How is the induction stove and electric oven working out for us? Can we exceed the capacity of the batteries and inverter? What are the benefits and drawbacks of induction cooking on a sailboat? What are the limits of the system? How much power does it use? What is our fallback plan if the system fails? We still see people we know wherever we go, though, getting some big hellos from boats passing by. As far as projects are concerned, we fire up the water maker, which is a high-pressure, reverse-osmosis system that desalinates sea water. Since it's removing dissolved salts, yes it does indeed remove bacteria and viruses as well, which are larger than salts. Satchel does some good explanations on how to start a water maker for the first time. TDS stands for total dissolved solids. What's the power draw on the 12 V electrical system? How much water can this water maker put out? The last few minutes are a nature show. Tall mountains surround numerous protected bays and dense forests loom over the crystal clear water. Honestly on the surface it seems perfect. But these mountains create extremely deep anchorages so boaters are forced to anchor very close to land and tie lines ashore. This situation can be very dangerous if strong winds come from the wrong direction, which is actually not all that uncommon here since the wind wraps around the mountains in unpredictable ways. So you can never be certain that you are truly protected. And that’s a bit hard to stomach when our home and everything we own and love hang in the balance. Now if you cruise this area in the summer, the weather is for the most part calm and predictable, but you’ll have to share it with about 7 billion other boats. So we’re here in the spring and although the anchorages aren't too crowded, the weather is at times volatile and unpredictable. So we’ve got to learn how to cope with these unique challenges if we’re going to survive one of the most beautiful cruising grounds we’ve ever experienced. But first we’ve got to make the 50 nm sail from our current anchorage at Serce Limani, where we’ve been for the past week enjoying a bit of isolation and off-grid living. Fourth week at sea, sailing from Costa Rica to Hawaii and landfall is getting closer and closer. We enjoy life at sea, the weather is nice and we call home from the satellit phone. Then as if it would never happen we see land again :) We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. We’ve become pretty comfortable with our life on the river. Each morning, once we’re underway, Kirk takes the helm and I make breakfast in the galley. Then we switch back and forth with steering, giving each other a chance to get something done. One afternoon, Kirk installs buttons on the handrail covers I sewed back in Wisconsin. We travel most of the day, often until sunset, drop the hook, then do it all over again the next day. The further south we go, the more we feel like we’re in the middle of nowhere. The towns grow thin, the marinas are few and far between, and we anchor out more and more. Because we have such cold mornings, our Westerbeke diesel engine needs some extra coaxing to get started. Thankfully, we’ve figured out a trick to warm him up. Even though it feels remote, we’re now closer to the Gulf than ever. This is our last full river episode, so if you’re getting antsy for open water, hang on, we’re almost there! More music by Common Jack 🎶 Hope you enjoy, Lauren & Kirk P.S. The following are excerpts from an article by John Paul White published in Southern Boating in December 1988. “The design chosen was Thomas Colvin’s 50’ Pipistrelle, a larger sister to his famous Gazelle. These boats are shoal keel developments of the traditional V-bottomed sharpie and are of moderately light displacement. They are easily driven under both power and sail and are well-suited for short handed cruising. The lines show a single-chine clipper bow hull, with a long shallow keel and a raking curved counter stern. There is a raised afterdeck, a flush mid-ship steering station over the full width of the engine room, and a traditional trunk cabin forward with water-ways and bulwarks. Under the supervision of Ray Merrill at Island Star Marine in Gulfport, Mississippi, the hull was sandblasted to white metal subsequent to plating, flame sprayed with aluminum on the exterior and multiply coated with Devoe epoxy anticorrosive paint inside and out. All frames, longitudinals and inside corners were covered with epoxy to eliminate moisture pockets. Thereafter and on delivery of the hull/deck to Pensacola, Florida, two additional coats of Devoe epoxy were applied to the hull followed by finish coats on the inside. All bronze fittings are set in neoprene with sleeved bolts and bedded with 5200 sealant. Every hole drilled in the boat was drilled through a paper cup to collect shavings and the hole immediately vacuumed, acid-treated and primed with Devoe Bar-Rust to eliminate rust specks. An absolute minimum of epoxy fairing was applied to the hull and then only in areas of continuous welding, to prevent future spalling of fairing putty under hard use. Instead, more than 30 man-days were spent applying and sanding 12 coats of high build primer and acrylic glazing before the polyurethane paint job. In consultation with the designer, a special construction process replaced the after cabin steel top with a laminated wooden structure covered with 1/4” teak planks set in West System Epoxy. This avoided the rust problems associated with wooden decks laid over steel and in addition, saved almost 600 pounds in the after section of the boat. Traditional scuttle hatches, skylights, cap rails, and monkey rails with turned styles were built of Honduras mahogany and covered with ten coats of ultraviolet-filtered varnish. The interior woods are cypress for hull, ceiling and bulkheads, Honduras mahogany for joinery and ash for floorings, all varnished. The rig was given special attention to bring to the traditional advantages of the gaff rig evolutionary advances of the last 100 years development in materials and hardware. Custom aluminum spars were built by Johnson Sails in St. Petersburg, all with internal halyards, reefing lines, outhauls, and topping lifts. Harken 3” Big Boat blocks, several custom made for this boat, were used throughout. Lewmar line stoppers and winches add sail control and shaping. Powerful 6-1 Harken vangs help handle the long booms. Sails were built by Shurr of Pensacola, Florida, a racing sailmaker who happened to also have experience with the gaff rig. They incorporate moderate roach supported by battens and shelf feet for draft control. Many other details of this boat, as varied as her hand-carved nautical scenes by Otto Preske and Barry Simpson of Gatlinburg Tennessee, to her powerful electrical system designed and installed by Kevin Carney of DC Engineering Inc., were worked out among the owner, the designer, and several specialists in an effort to construct a steel boat which all could be proud of.” What do you think? This one is bittersweet. On one hand, the battery upgrade is a smashing success. Kirk completes the installation of our new battery bank, and we now we have all the juice we need. On the other, our arch project is a complete and utter disaster. We can’t tell you how glad we are to be done editing this episode. We wanted to do the experience justice by telling you the whole story, but we’re not going to miss having to relive this period of our lives! Looking back through all this footage, I’m in awe of all the research, preparation, self-education and labor Kirk put into upgrading our house battery bank. With electrical projects, you can really only get it right, OR, you get it terribly wrong. Kirk knocked this one out of the park. Stick with us… That whole ‘going-sailing’ thing is right around the corner! Lauren & Kirk P.S. We made it to Sunny Florida and now it's time to reach our goal of 100,000 subscribers! We have a stressful dock experience and now it's time to get projects done. First step is to get our helms cleaned up. The leather wrap is falling off, all cut and ugly. We send them off for powdercoating and hire a machinist to make a better outboard mount. We'll document the mount in another episode but for now just know, it's beautiful. Thank you all for being here - we wouldn't be here without you. #sailingvideo #sailingblog #truelifeadventure Sailing to Palmerston Island in the Pacific. When your steering breaks on boat that's bad, when it breaks in the vastness of the Pacific that's really bad! Thank you for watching this episode, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. In this episode we fly to France with @OddLifeCrafting to attend the International Multihull Show in La Grande Motte. We are going aboard a lot of different catamarans and trimarans to really get a good look up close, in person look at all the details so we can get a sense of our like/dislikes of each one. Comparing things like layout, design, build quality, cost etc to figure out exactly what we want in a future boat. We take a look at Neel, Aventura, Windelo during the show. But what really stole the show for us was getting to sea trial the @NAUTITECHCATAMARANS 44 Open. We had one heck of a sail hitting a top speed of 15.7 knots! It’s safe to say we were blown away by the sailing performance of this vessel! We also hop aboard a 40 Open for a quick walk through to compare the different models. Let us know what boat you think we should get in the comments below! Here's more info: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/visitor-welcome Comment when you see the moment you started here with Arabella! Who the heck even is Ben? You'll see our video editor! Learn about our new boat carpenter, KP. How long has Annie B been a part of A2A... really? A look back and a look forward is what this is all about. A chance to see the timeline as it's never been seen before. It's been a while since we've checked back in with the roots of the idea—the pith of what has made 165,000 subscribers want to witness the story of this wooden boat making it to the water. A path less walked and one less rat in the race has drawn Alix, Ben, Aaron, Carolyn, Anne, KP, and many other hands to pitch in to see this boat in the water. Thank you very much for making one of the most delightful parts of this journey what it is. We're glad to share it, and we're glad you're here to share it with us. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when Steve will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that he and our crew have built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code. Now that we're ASA 101 certified, we figured we use one of our complementary half day charters from South Coast Sailing to test our skills with just the two of us and no adults! Things didn't go as well as expected which turned out to be a good thing because we learned a ton! Wondering why this lock is such a pain? You have to watch this to understand :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YV3vcfpTh5s After hearing horror stories for the duration of our stay on the hard about exiting this canal system in the late winter/spring with a deep draft, we were undoubtedly relieved once the hook was set and we were outside the canal system for good. From our anchorage in Charlotte Harbor, we are awaiting our weather window to head 'south'. No concrete plans, just destinations. And we'll be finishing up projects all along the way.
