BoatUS Magazine's associate editor Mark Corke teaches you how to dock a single engine inboard boat in a slip by backing it. To dock a boat, you'll use steering, forward and reverse gear, and throttle. Use prop walk to assist you. Position your boat at a right angle to the slip. Stop the boat with the transom in line with the dock by shifting into reverse. Shift to neutral, turn the wheel in the direction you want your bow to go, engage forward gear and give a burst of power to start the bow turning in the correct direction. Shift to neutral, turn the wheel the direction you want the stern of the boat to move, and engage reverse to kick the stern and further rotate the boat. Keep repeating these steps until your boat is aligned with the slip. Depending on your boat's prop walk, you may not need to use the wheel much at all. Besides the inherent merits of the design and standard features, the price point is just as appealing -- just $19,795 with a 50-hp Yamaha and a single-axle trailer. All topside hardware is 316 stainless steel, as on the builder’s larger boats. The R160 uses many of the same components, and much of the same careful attention to detail found on her bigger sisters. For those interested in fishing closer to shore, the builder designed the hull with a modest 10” (.25 m) draft, allowing buyers to fish in areas that larger center consoles with deeper deadrise designed for offshore use can't reach.

Another overnight offshore passage in the books. It seems every passage we do ends up being around 80-120nm total, which means a portion needs to be at night. Luckily we both enjoy night sailing and can never get over the stars we see along the way. This time we rode out the back edge of a cold front that allowed us to cruise downwind averaging 6.5kts with just our headsail. We arrived safely to Marco Island after 18hrs of sailing and an hour of motoring to prepare for our next leg of the journey. Here we’ll be provisioning, doing yearly engine maintenance, finishing the cockpit teak and going aloft to fix a spreader – all within a week.
