We heard a lot of different opinions about propane vs alcohol stoves. It was time to put them to the test. So we put our old propane stove up against our new Origo 3000 from Dometic to see which one is truly better. Bringing Yabá from wreck to dreamy! Episode 83 In this episode we show all the hand-carved details needed to build our new wooden rudder. We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Check out the new channel Spearfishing Nomad https://youtu.be/Bu4boWa_H0g The champion Margarida gets us conch and hogfish for dinner. I give a lesson on how to sail southern Cuba. We don't make our destination of Cayo Largo but end up at Cayo Rico with a careful sail through the shallows, dodging sandbanks and shoals and reefs. The barrier reef gives us protection from the main swell and Margarida finally has a sail without getting seasick. We arrive at Cayo Rico and it is awesome. Crossing the pacific is going to be a massive challenge that involves a lot of risk… Risk that we’re working hard to mitigate. In this episode we talk about our concerns with three cracks that we’ve identified on our main and mizzen masts, we cut off the mast bases, and we get started on a solution while working with a local welder and wood worker. We are on the last steps of putting together the sill for the house top and the blocking for the mizzen mast. Alix needs to cut the half laps in the corners of the sill to get them to fit just right. Once that is done, we can paint them and screw them in place. Steve on the other hand, is installing some of the last deck framing as well as making the blocking for the mizzen mast. With these last things in place, we can then move on to doing a mock up of the house top and the cockpit. This will be really exciting as it will really show the space we have to work with inside of Arabella. Thank you for watching and supporting the channel. We hope you enjoy this video and see you next week! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. In this episode, we finally arrive at the Mediterranean Sea! The final stretch of the Rhone river didn't present too many exciting scenes, however our first night on the coast of France was definitely something to remember. It’s the longest day of daylight for Boris in the Southern Hemisphere, and these extra rays of light seem to be powering up his sails! The day started on a bit of a scary note, with the boat involuntarily doing a pirouette that left Boris briefly out of control. But now, things are looking up - Boris is climbing the ranks and has finally caught up to Yannick Bestaven, the winner of the previous Vendée Globe. We’re incredibly lucky to have video from both sides of this overtake, capturing the dynamics of Ocean racing. Yannick adjusts his course to dead downwind to slow down, as Boris was on starboard. (For those unfamiliar: when sailboats approach on different tacks, the boat on starboard is the stand-on vessel with the right of way.) This moment beautifully showcases the respect and camaraderie among these fierce competitors. Out on the vast ocean, they’re also each other’s closest fans and allies. Now, it’s time for a celebratory dance... as long as the boat doesn’t decide to do another pirouette! One of the most unique attractions ready to discover is Croatia’s Sea Organ. Located on the seafront promenade of Croatia’s northern town Zadar, this installation is a first of its kind in the country. Commissioned in 2005 by architect Nikola Bašić alongside expert Dalmatia stone carvers, the Sea Organ in Zadar was created as a way to connect the locals back to the Adriatic Sea. 35 organ pipes have been carved along 70 meters of the promenade on the riva’s northwestern corner. Chiseled into 7 steps, the installation works by using 7 chords of 5 tones changing as you make your way down the promenade. Depending on the time of day, the Zadar Sea Organ will play music of varying tunes. When the tides are calm, the sounds are gentle and soft - much like the sound of someone blowing the top of an empty bottle! When the tides shift and the waves become more powerful, a much livelier song is played. One of the best ways to enjoy this installation is finding a step to sit on and listening to the changing songs throughout the day as Zadar plays its very own symphony for you. For more information about the town of Zadar you can visit our comprehensive Destination Guide on our website here: https://www.sail-croatia.com/destinations/zadar

There are a lot of exciting things coming together at the moment. Steve installed the rest of the tie rods, Alix finished the sill for the deckhouse to sit on and we made a mockup of the cockpit! One task completely finished, one setting us up for the deckhouse construction when temperatures warm up and the last so that we can visualize the space the cockpit will occupy. But also, let's be real, the cockpit mockup is just as much to keep our dream alive! Thank you so much for following and supporting Arabella's construction. If you haven't done so already, please subscribe. You can also sign up for our newsletter ( http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv ) ,which will be going live soon, to get notified of new videos. See you next Friday! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interesting in supporting/helping here are a few ways: Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg Recurring support via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Original Soundtrack available at benfundis.bandcamp.com FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

Welp, it’s about time we get moving south, eh? With all the boat dramas from the last few episodes now behind us, we’re finally making miles south down the Illinois River. And good thing, too, ‘cause winter is hot on our keel. We encounter all sorts of fun stuff on the river: huge locks, herds of sheep, free docks located in the heart of several downtowns, electric fish barriers, duck hunters hiding in elaborate blinds, pairs of pelicans, flocks of seagulls, and possibly some golden eagles (they were too far away and we’re not very confident in our birding skills). After a few stops in the towns of Joilet and Ottawa, and a marina to pick up some parts and supplies, we make it to Henry, IL, where we wake up to frost on our deck. It’s getting cold as, mate. Gotta keep moving’ south. Hope you enjoy! Lauren & Kirk P.S. Beneteau Oceanis 361 Boat Tour - How we Turned our Weekend Cruiser Into a Blue Water Sailboat -Ep 25
Welcome aboard Bacchus, our 2001 Beneteau Oceanis Clipper 361. We bought her in 2018 in Ipswich, United Kingdom and sailed her down to Brighton on the South Coast of England where we lived aboard for just over a year, getting her ready to cross oceans and sail us home to New Zealand. We made a few big improvements alongside many, many small additions, and we're still tweaking things as we go - but we've found her to be a great cruising boat for the two of us. She's a comfy home but also sails fast - we've had 24-hour runs of 170nm-plus. We've been wanting to (virtually) show you around for a while now, but we finally got the chance during lockdown when we ran out of other things to do! Thanks Corona! So welcome aboard (we wish you could be here in reality!) Let us know if you have any other questions in the comments. We hope you like her, we sure do! Dani & Asher Like our videos but not the ads? In the constant search for weight reduction JFA Yachts paid particular attention to the use of light materials, including laminates on honeycomb cores for the construction of the interior, the hull out of aluminum, a superstructure made of composite, and the Mast and Boom are made of Carbon Fiber. This resulted in a lightship weight of only 56T for this 85' performance, cruising catamaran. Delivered in 2018, NDSE was designed for circumnavigation through both poles, and has already been taken to Antarctica by her current owner. Whether you are cruising in the tropics or the arctic the NDSE is built to make sure you are comfortable and safe in all conditions. Equipped with a carbon mast and boom, NDSE features a sail plan tailored for high-performance sailing together with hydraulic fittings on the flybridge which ensures she is easily handled, even with a reduced crew. Externally, the yacht offers a large aft cockpit with a relaxing seating area on starboard and a dining table on the port side, together with large sunbathing areas and a daytime toilet. In order to limit the overall weight of the boat, the use of teak was limited to the deck forward of the owner's cabin, the aft cockpit, and the flybridge. In terms of performance under sail, she is very quick…. The sails were made by the highly respected sailmaker "Incidences" using the latest D4 membrane technology in order to combine form with stability, lightness, and longevity. NDSE achieves 11 knots upwind and 12 knots under gennaker at 90 °, with 15 knots of true wind meaning that she is capable of very good daily averages when cruising. French interior design house, Darnet Design, created a sophisticated yet understatedly elegant interior using natural tones. The furniture is in oak, contrasted by the addition of walnut with the space enhanced by the addition of multiple soft furnishings in bright colors to lift the entire space to another level and also allowing for an element of customisation by the new owner. The cockpit flows into the huge main saloon, with a bar on starboard and a more formal dining area on port side. Forward is the chart table which includes all the navigation equipment, significantly upgraded for global exploration by the owner, together with entertainment and excellent communication systems which allow for long stays on board. The owner's cabin occupies the entire beam of the boat, including a lounge area and large windows which flood the room with light and allow for splendid panoramic views as well as private access to the foredeck. The port hull accommodates the owner's bathroom, a children's cabin with 3 beds, together with a guest cabin aft. The aft section of the starboard hull accommodates the 4th guest cabin. The forward section is dedicated to the crew with the captain's cabin, a double cabin, and large galley with crew mess. A 16' tender aft of the cockpit is launched using a Tenderlift platform. The many exterior lockers offer ample storage for fenders and mooring lines as well as an array of leisure equipment (inflatable longboards, Wakeboard, etc.). NDSE also has a large trunk overlooking the rear platform to store 4 bicycles as well as diving equipment. 0:00 Intro 3:02 Flybridge 4:30 Upper Helm 6:04 Swim Platform 7:47 Engine Room 8:43 Aftdeck 10:30 Foredeck 12:27 Salon 14:40 Master Stateroom 16:14 VIP Stateroom 16:33 Guest Stateroom 17:39 VIP Stateroom 2 17:55 Galley 19:25 Crew Accommodations 20:32 Outro Musicbed SyncID: MB01BRVPXXZ9FE1

After spending 6 months on the dry we are now counting the days to splash our sailboat and to finally untie the lines. We’re Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that have bought a 44ft steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200, designed by Joubert and Nivelt) that was neglected on the hard for 22 years in Guarujá, Brazil. We are on the mission of refitting her to travel the world taking our house with us! Are you curious to know more about it?
