Capable of creating asymmetric sections shapes that are believed in some cases to change gear automatically with varying boats speeds, double America’s Cup helmsman and North Sails president Ken Read explains why they are much faster upwind than the wings of the previous Cup boats. Pulling in after a great sail with a little trouble from a wayward anchor and life line.

We are getting farther up the hull with the planking and as we do so, we are nearing the point at the stern where the propeller shaft will go through. We need to get this hole bored before we plank past it because we are going to need to be able to align our bore perfectly level (our shaft is level to the water line). Before we start to bore though, we want to make sure that we have all the pieces made and ready to be installed so that everything can go right in after the hole is ready and nothing will move before we get a chance to instal. We will be reusing Victoria's exterior fitting for the cutless bearing but also need to make a fixture on the internal portion of the stern post to accept the stuffing box. It seems the popular thing to do here is rent a car in the north and drive south to explore. Since a rental car cost $80 plus $60+ for a tank of fuel we decided to forego the land experience and just sail as close as possible. Turns out the island is pretty skinny and we can anchor near many of the popular spots. We're starting just south of Harbour Island at the two most famous spots: Glass Window Bridge and Queens Bath. In this sailing episode, we dart about to many super sailing destinations on the island of Zakynthos and Kefalonia. We spend a lot of our time underwater, exploring the crystal clear waters, reefs and sea caves using Ross's "new toy" the Sublue Vapor aka the Ferrari of the ocean! Laura wasn't able to wear her bikini as this thing would have ripped it off! So she went 007 style in a one-piece like a girl from a James Bond movie - move over superyachts! Life in paradise is not always easy here in greece, as there may be perfect beaches and sexy diving on these islands but there is also plenty of swell! This put us in some uncomfortable situations but luckily for us our ground tackle was up to the task. We visited Tsilivi, Xigia, Agios Nicolaos, Skala and Poros all of which are fantastic spots and have their own individual things to see and do. Also Ross get his tools out and fixes some broken Bavaria items on our yacht that we ordered from SVB including a new shower head for Laura to test out! While we take a break from the prop shaft assembly to let Joe finish milling the Delrin liner and the other components, we get back to some planking. As soon as the prop shaft assembly is installed in the stern post, we will be able to hopefully get moving on installing the rest of the planking. In order to get set up for this, we head out to the cedar rack we recently built and sort through the lumber to see what we really have to work with. As we mentioned in the previous video, cedar can have a significant amount of knots and although many of these are not an issue, they are still to be avoided. Therefore, we still need to determine how many boards we have with minimal knots. The other aspect of planking we need to tackle is lining off the hull. There are many ways to plank a wooden boat but it is generally accepted that it should also be done in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. In the manner we are doing it, we need to line off in order to figure out how to diminish each plank to fill the different amount of space at stern, midship and bow. (Parts and sources listed below) I used to clean my boat bottom by holding my breath with a snorkel. It was a lot of work with constant interruption to come up for, air and my lung capacity is not what it used to be. I wanted the smallest and lightest possible 12v dive hookah. It needed to draw minimal current for one diver working at max 4-foot depth. Ready-made units were too big and expensive and designed for going deeper than I needed. There was one small unit on ebay for $440 but I was unsure of its quality, reliability, and size of components. I spent under $300 on parts. Warning: Diving at even shallow depths with compressed air can be dangerous. Please do not copy my system unless you have done your own research and take responsibility for your own choices. A diving course is recommended. Here is a list of the materials I used: 1. Pump: I used the ACQ-908 12 volt, 105 watt (9 amp), 150 L/Min, 0.12MPA which was just barely adequate for me and requires I control my breathing for this small compressor to keep up. It would be a safer choice to use the next size larger pump ACQ-910 - $89 at Amazon or several vendors at Alibaba: https://www.amazon.com/HEALiNK-Aquarium-Aquaculture-Pressure-Compressor/dp/B06XJ8P656/ref=sr_1_1 2. Air Breathing Hose 10mm x 20m - Non-toxic Scuba Hookah Diving Hose - ebay $44US plus $61 shipping from Australia. Hose disconnect fittings and clamps from Harborfreight.com - about $15 7. 12v 20 amp circuit breaker (or switch and fuse) - about $17 on Amazon but I had a used one on hand. 8. Scrap plywood, aluminum plate to mount switch, two #10 bolts, nuts and washers, #10 AWG wire, crimp connectors, and battery clips, clip to hold air hose to dive belt - about $25 Total about $320 but if I wanted to use the cheaper hose that would bring it under $300. I'm sure there is a more elegant way to connect the various hose fittings with quick disconnects but this is what I had at hand.

After being weather bound in Norfolk VA for 8 days, s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) left Norfolk on the tail end of yet another large weather system. Sailing to Bermuda started on a bright but cold November day, with strong offshore winds over a flat sea. So we sailed very fast down the Virginia coast, passed Kitty Hawk, and out into the Atlantic. We were among several other yachts all making the same break-for-it southwards, in this weather window. Crossing the Gulf Stream was a bit lumpy but thankfully with lighter following winds. We watched the water temperature rise from 15DegC to 26DegC in just a few hours. We could then pack our thermal jackets and wooly hats away in a very deep locker! After 8 hours of motor sailing the wind came around in front of us and put us hard on the wind for the rest of the trip, excepting the last afternoon where we had a beam reach into the island. Thailand is hot spot for tourism, but is it possible to find some seclusion from the masses? I think we scored!!! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we utilise the sunny days in Thailand and explore some of the many islands there are on offer. The sailing grounds in Thailand are amazing and we are blessed with smooth, easy and fun sailing. The problem is that other tourist boats are only a short boat ride away from the land and therefore we have to be in quick if we want to beat the masses. Part of the enjoyment of living on a sailboat is to find seclusion, away from everyone and everything. Thailand makes that hard, but we tried and we won!!! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we have returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning as we plan to sail our Nandji girl around the world!! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it!
