After our glue failure on the scarf joints for the planks, we also had some glue failure on the graving pieces. This time though, it was with a new and good batch of Resorcinol. So, we were not quite sure what the problem was at first. We later realized that the clamping pressure was being lost due to shrinking in the heat boxes. Since Resorcinol needs, high clamping pressure, this was resulting in a poor glue joint which would then fail. We had to figure out a good solution to this problem so we reached out to Jamestown Distributors, who promptly sent us a couple batches of Epoxies to test (including some one that was not their own!). We ended up doing a test of all the epoxies and these resulted in some very strong glue bonds for our graving pieces! We will move forward using epoxy for the graving pieces but still use Resorcinol for the scarf joints on the oak planks. Fresh Resorcinol has a good track record with oak, unlike epoxy. As all the scarf joints overlap frames and get rivets through them anyways, and all the graving pieces mate up to the next plank, this system should work very well! After flying down the Mississippi River at 10 knots, turning upriver onto the Ohio is a shock. It’s frothy with breaking waves, it’s running fast, and we struggle against its current. At one point, Soulianis slows all the way down to 1.5 knots, and we start to worry if we’re even going to make it — even at full throttle. Our short 46-mile journey on the Ohio River takes us two days. We breathe huge sighs of relief after turning south onto the Tennessee River. Even though we’re still heading upstream, the Tennessee’s current is a much milder 1-2 knots. The Kentucky Dam Lock — our first upstream lock transit — is rough. We quickly learn how much easier and more pleasant it is to be lowered down a lock than raised up. Compared to the muddy brown rivers, Kentucky Lake is a beautiful bright blue. We hop and skip our way down the lake until it turns back into the Tennessee River, pushing further south towards the sun and the warmth. More music by Common Jack in this episode! Sometimes, pairing vintage machines, is just cool! When we got the 27 inch thicknesser from Ganon and Benjamin a couple months ago, we knew we were going to have to figure out how to pair it with a bomber power source. In the end, everything came together beautifully! We couldn't use the three phase 10 horsepower motor they had on it as we don't have three phase here at the boat yard and it would have been very challenging for us to even get that hooked up here. So we immediately started thinking about what else we could use. An electric motor was not really going to cut it because we really couldn't get enough juice to something big enough. We had the option of running it off the PTO from the tractor but that would have been extremely impractical. So, we decided to go to an engine! With luck, we ended up getting in contact with someone that had this old Chrysler Flathead 6 that was used to run a pine shingle making operation back in the day. It had been sitting out for a long time but we were pretty sure we could get Grampa and Joe to get her running again. And that they did! Now we have an 1800s era 27 inch thicknesser run by a 1947 Chrysler Flathead 6 that also runs an industrial size fan for chip collection. The whole package in one! The bronze floor timbers have been a lot of work but it is all paying off. We spend some time prepping everything so that we can finally get to installing these beauties in their places for good! Each faying surface will need treatment before we can place the floors and bolt them down. We also need to figure out the angle for all the through bolts in the stem and stern that are going to hold the floors in those areas. The planking process can be something of a mystery. Unlike houses that are square and easily divided up to figure out siding, boats require a little bit more thought and layout for them to look right. In this video we go over a little bit of the lining off process. Lining off is the process of determining what each plank of the boat is going to look like so that the hull looks evenly planked. We have a lot of planking coming up soon so this was an opportune time to have our friend Thad Danielson come and explain a bit of this process to lay the groundwork for the job to come. I have spoken to lot's of clients and potential buyers who ask the same question. Can this yacht be handled by myself or shorthanded? I always answer yes; the reasons are that when you get up to a vessel of 50ft or greater it actually becomes easier believe it or not. The reason for this is you start finding bow thrusters on 50+ yachts along with electric winches and in Jeanneau's case the way we order the yachts 53 + electric Genoa furler's. all of these options and with the new modern hull design make single handling a vessel of this size very easy. Actually I even find it easier to sail this 57 then my own Jeanneau 39i P.V. You definitely don’t need an engine to sail around the world. We made the decision early on to have a reliable, bullet proof engine because we believe it opens up doors to experiences that we couldn’t have otherwise.
