The big question on everyone's mind is ... what is it going to COST us to build this new catamaran? Matt has spent the past few weeks talking to the designers at Schionning and Oram, as well as professional and ameture builders to gather as much information as possible on the costs that go into building a kit catamaran. Things can obviously vary from builder to builder, but taking a simple and basic approach, we've narrowed down the numbers on what we estimate it will cost to build an Oram 45R. As many of you may have deduced, our planned planking party did not go as planned at all. This was for many reasons but mainly due to the outbreak of COVID19 right as people were on their way here. We had planned to take three weeks and get this great crew together and finish planking Arabella. Right before that, we got a visit from Lou Sauzedde at Tips from a Shipwright and we all decided that using stealers and a funky shaped plank would allow us to more easily plank Arabella. This was one of the hurdles as we hadn't planned on taking the time to figure out this funky plank. Next, just as people were starting to show up, word that COVID19 was spreading in the U.S. alerted us to the fact that we were likely going to have to make to big decisions. At first, we thought we may be able to shelter in place all together. But after some serious talks with everyone (some of which you will see in the next video) we sent everyone home. But, in that week that everyone was here, we got a good amount done, despite the planers blowing up... The stealers were fastened in place and we started spiling out that funky plank with the help of Jack (https://daratimber.com/) and Aaron as George and Robert worked very efficiently on making up some more straight planks for later on. It was a real bummer that the planking party ended up being cut short but we do believe that it was the right choice in keeping everyone safe. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. We procure some big ole logs that we were told was walnut but turned out to be ash (still usable!). Grandpa fires up the old Massey Ferguson and smooths the wood yard road in preparation for the sawmill to arrive. Das Schiff soll als mobiles Ferienhaus für Urlaube am Mittelmeer gedacht sein. Mittelcockpit, 40 Fuß und möglichst wenig Aufwand standen auf der Must-Have-Liste, für ca. 80.000 € Budget. Den Markt hatten wir recht schnell runtergebrachten auf eine Hallberg Rassy 382, die durch Qualität und Solidität besticht und eine Bavaria Ocean 40, die deutlich mehr Raum bietet, modernere Ausstattung und sportlicher segelt. Klar gibt es konstruktiv und qualitativ große Unterschiede zwischen diesen beiden Schiffen, die Entscheidung ist jedoch recht klar ausgefallen - nämlich für die Bavaria. The SAILING HORROR of Boat Life continues & we get BLOWN AWAY this week. Sailing in the winter in the Med is not always fun! In this episode we make it to Elounda Bay, Crete after a chilly and grey few days sailing from Turkey. We are so happy to arrive to what we thought was a safe sailing paradise for the winter. With 365 degrees protection what could go wrong? Oh boy, did we not expect what was about to come! 45 knots gusts from every angle, no sleep again and our dinghy ends up tipped over. The wind gusts are so strong, the even almost ripped off our solar arch and it took the rivets off the Bimini. So, boat repairs have to be done. Just the next day we get a respite for the weather and enjoy some summer like conditions but not for long. Another storm is approaching, and we give in and seek shelter in a marina. This will be the first time in more than 11 months but after a CAPSIZE DINGHY WITH MOTOR ATTACHED we can not take more chances But we had enough of sailing life in Crete so we pack up in and sail west. Another few days of winter sailing are ahead of us again. Pylos is our next best bet, so we pull up the anchor, stow everything away, hoist out the mainsail and fly the genoa. Living on a boat in the winter in the Mediterranean? Who even does that? Usually every charter boat in Greece, sailor and even cruisers put their boat on the hard or staz in a marina for at least the worst part of the winter. We, however, were crazy enough to try and survive a winter at anchor. So far, we made it, (Kiki) barely alive. 😅😅😱 Do you want to know what real boat life feels like?
