We have been working hard for weeks on end to prepare Nandji for the massive year of sailing across the Indian Ocean. We finally have her ready and take her for a test sail 120nm from Thailand to Langkawi. Stopping off half way at a group of islands we pick up a mooring for the night to rest... Little did we know how much our life was about to change. A heavy squall blew through the anchorage in the wee hours of the morning and we were woken by the anchor alarm screaming. Before we could start the engine we were being tossed around on the reef. The mooring we had picked up had failed and snapped and we were now being pushed by the wind and waves onto the reef... Is this the end of Nandji? With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning as we plan to sail our Nandji girl around the world!! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! This is what happens when sailed through a Force 8 Gale the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. On Day 6, the lower segment of that low pressure system we showed you 2 days ago caught up to our location. Considering it was blowing up to 70 kts further north of that system, we sailed further south and downwind, and felt much safer riding the gale out for the next 12 to 18 hours... We don't see the benefit of overdramatizing these conditions, or making it "look scary" on camera, but to simply show the realities of what it was like going rough weather on Uma... We explore the beautiful greek island of Santorini. The island is bascially the crater from a huge volcano that exploded more than 3,000 years ago. We were blown away after the first hike and our first lunch. The crystal clear water is unbelievable. The terrain is unforgivingly unique. And I hope the cave formations came out in the video. Smiles were glued to our faces here in Niue and I'm so sad our time was cut short so abruptly. Never fear, if you liked this part of Niue just wait until next time!
