We find a serious Keel Problem + we need to Repair this sailboat: Something is actually missing from our keel! Fiberglass keel repairs are underway! Error: Foam in a can is NOT open cell foam as stated in the video. Polyester resin will eat up Polystyrene foam. Patrick Childress, after 12 years on his second circumnavigation explains what does when he finds out we are missing the proper amount of structural foam in our keel... When sitting on the hard, this problem can cause a sailboat keel to oil can, or even crack, when its blocked in the unsound section of the keel. Patrick then shows the process for the keel repair. Sailboat Keel repair can be done diy, it just takes some sailboat diy knowledge, time and effort and the right tools. We have been sailing around the world for 12 years on our sailboat Brick House, a Valiant 40. We are hauled out of the water , and it’s time to fix and upgrade a few things on this 41 year old boat! We received a lot of valuable technical support from AMT Composites, and will be using a number of products they recommended, imported from all over the world, namely Gurit Fiberglass Resin which is very comparable to West Systems. The sails are designed to be operated by short hand crew. All sailing operations controlled by a push button from a panel located at the wheel house. The stay sail is self-tacking. Khaleesi has an adjustable lifted keel that allows her to reach full sailing performance. When sailing to the wind, the keel is lowered to max depth of six meters. (About 21 feet) With following winds and when entering shallow water, the keel is lifted to minimum depth of 3.2 meters (About 10 feet) Storage spaces in this boat are Amazing… stretched along from the aft to the fore deck. The storage doors are hydraulically controlled and have manual locks that keeps them tightly closed in bad weather when breaking waves are washing the decks. Though Khaleesi is a powerful sailing machine, still, she has enough fuel capacity to cross the Atlantic Ocean Only by using her 550 hp Volvo Penta single main engine. Khaleesi crew accommodations are designed for six. The main crew area is separated from the guest saloon with a door and has also separate stairs leading to the deck allowing guests maximum privacy, 2 cabins located here, each for two crew with two heads and a shared shower. The large well-equipped galley and the pantry are part of this crew area. There is an additional third crew cabin for two which is normally used to accommodate 2 stewardesses. This cabin is located aft of the saloon. khaleesi has 3 cabins for 6 guests. The master cabin is located at the aft, far from the engine room and includes Office, un suit and walk in wardrobe. The two large twin guest cabins, each with un suite, are located before the master cabin. The one at the port side has also a pullman bed. There is a high sitting area saloon at the main deck allowing guests to view the ocean through big windows. The main large saloon is located at the lower deck with attached day head. Outside on the aft deck there is a sitting place for dining and sun bedding space for relaxing.

Eco-friendly antifouling Q&A with Capt. Brian and Senor Brady. We sit down and discuss the results of our eco-friendly antifouling experiment. Brian starts off with a little recap of what we did during our haul out in Grenada, and why we made the decision to try and find a paint that did not rely on traditional antifouling agents. We show the results of Delos sitting at 3 weeks, 5 weeks, and 7 weeks without moving, and compare those results to boats around us with hard copper, ablative copper, homemade copper-epoxy, and copper coat. Finally we scrub the bottom clean and start sailing regularly again and show how the effects of water over the hull make a difference in the growth on Delos’s hull. After getting a tip about a deserted island with a good anchorage and cool exploring we set off in the fog. Cross Island is reported to have great hiking, a protected anchorage, an old coastguard station and if you believe in horror stories there are rumors about a haunted treasure buried on the island too. Thanks for the bikini Bobby! I know it's YOUR birthday, but funnily enough, I end up with the gift. During our time in Annapolis, in mid- October, we decide to get on a few more boats. Being invited out by a few of our Patrons, we go inspect one of the Seawind 1160 Lites, in a mini show being held by Sail Away Catamarans. We have the chance to inspect the layout of one of these boats, and see what it's like to have dual outboard engines instead of an inboard diesel. Plus, we have the opportunity to take it out for a test sail on the Chesapeake to see how she handles. Then, it's time to go for a pleasure cruise with a few of our friends. The couple that is hosting us in town, Jeff and Cam, have a Catalina 36, which they're preparing to take cruising soon. Using a beautiful weekend - as well as a friend's birthday- we take these excuses as a reason to make the 25 mile sail down to the town of St. Michael's. Planking has been a very fun challenge though a bit of a challenge it has been. Learning to fit the oak planks to each other has its intricacies. We need to make sure the plank fits well fore and aft but also that the bevels match so that we can put in a good bead of cotton caulking. All of this is being done with thick, unruly oak planks! Once we finish these last broadstrakes, which will be the last oak planks, we will be moving on to cedar planking. Cedar, being a much lighter wood, is likely going to be much easier to work with. We are very much looking forward to seeing the difference this makes. But, before we get to those, we will have to wrap up a few more tasks... but that's for another video! In the mean time, we come across a few challenges with this last oak strake that we had not anticipated. Delos is a SPEED DEMON AGAIN! Our trip south continues with some gorgeous conditions, even if it was a bit chilly we were absolutely loving the winter in the Sea of Cortez compared to our trip up which was mostly motoring through a windless swimming pool and sweating A LOT 😂 . Now we had awesome wind and Delos was eating up the miles like a machine, it felt SO AMAZING! Our introduction back into cruiser life after our long break honestly couldn't have been better. We found some relaxing hot springs, did some hiking, a few repairs, and lots of wonderful moments together as a family. Sierra has changed so much in the 4 months since we were last cruising, and it's such a joy to see how much more independent, curious, and in awe of the world she has become. Days like these make us truly grateful for our lifestyle, and are such an amazing reminder that all the hard work in the boat yard and tough days on the water are 100 percent worth it!
