Kiteboarding is something we’ve always wanted to learn. In fact we had a kite on Delos when crossing the South Pacific and nearly killed ourselves trying to learn on our own. But now with an excellent teacher and some new kit we’re ready to give it another shot! Pokemon leads us through the entire setup of a kite and harness- covering the quick release safety gear and the basics of flying. Before we know it we’re body dragging all over the place and ready for our first board lesson. Face plants ensue, and some salt water is pushed down our throats but we succeed and have a few somewhat controlled rides by the end of our lessons. Then Pokemon and his mates show us what it’s all about by giving us a demonstration of what 11 years of every day practice will do to your skills. We ended up learning so much about kiting, got our basic skills down, and left with a passion to learn more about this sport. SOLD! Congratulations and safe travels to the new owners. Few sailboats have the potential to cross oceans with equal ease under both sail and power. The Nordhavn 56 – NordSail One is a rare design that beautifully marries the potential to sail forever with a main engine power plant engineered by the passage making trawler leaders at PAE/Nordhavn. NordSail One is the first of the series and led the charge that resulted in a further seven hulls to follow. The cost to order a new motorsailer today would exceed two million dollars and require a long wait. Approaching NordSail One, you will admire an elegant looking sailing yacht with a roomy forward deck and a trawler like pilothouse that combines the salon and inside helm station. The transom has a molded-in swim platform and you ascend a few steps to arrive in the raised (and covered) cockpit which initiates the upper level entering the saloon and inside helm. Her sailing performance is genuine, with a balanced sail plan and powered winches for ease of control. One brilliant innovation is her forward sailing helm station outside and ahead of the pilothouse. There is a large steering wheel on a binnacle with the essential navigation read outs mounted for quick reference. This outside well has a teak grate and comfortable seating, affording the skipper a great view of the sails and surroundings. This provides a secure center cockpit with excellent visibility and surprisingly easy sail controls. The headsail is adjusted via a hydraulic furler and hydraulic primary winches and has a high cut foot for a clear view along the horizon. The full batten mainsail is stowed in a Leisurefurl boom that is supported by a Navtec hydraulic rod boom vang. There is an assortment of Lewmar electric and hydraulic winches to simplify sail trim adjustments. Sheet controls are on deck and on the mast. NordSail One also has the optional cruising spinnaker package. Any sailboat can travel with strong winds, one of the amazing attributes of NordSail One is how well she moves in a soft breeze. My heart always sinks when I see a sailing yacht on the beach, because it not only means the end of somebody’s dream, but maybe the end of their home as well. And yet many of these losses are completely preventable with just a $30 part, which for the sake of manufacturer’s profits most boats happen to be missing. Fortunately it’s an easy retrofit that I installed on my boat after a close call with a freighter at night and that’s exactly what we’re going to talk about in this video Although the sails provide power for many conditions, most sailing yachts have auxiliary diesel engines like this one for maneuvering in marinas and docking, and for staying off the rocks when there is not enough wind to sail like this boat, or if somebody falls overboard and you need to rescue them in these conditions. While auxiliary diesel engines are extremely reliable most of the time, there is an unfortunate combination of physics, biology, and poor design which causes them to stop working when you are likely to need them most in an emergency – like in very rough sea conditions when you’re being blown onto the shore. And although we weren’t in rough sea conditions when our engine died in a shipping lane at night with a freighter coming straight at us, we had been earlier in the day, which definitely contributed to the problem. In a standard marine diesel system the fuel flows in a loop starting in the tank, then through a fuel/water separator to remove water and big particles, then to a fuel lift pump that actually sucks the fuel out of the tank, then to another fuel filter for very fine particles, and finally the injection pump and injectors into the engine. The unused fuel flows back to the tank and the cycle repeats. If you give a marine diesel engine clean fuel it will happily run like this for thousands of hours, and keep you safe and moving when you’re not sailing. But when it’s rough there’s another problem. Being in a damp marine environment moisture always finds its way into the tank. And it’s not the water itself that’s so much of a problem, because there’s a fuel/water separator, but the microbes that like to grow between the fuel and the water. These microbes form a sludge that stays harmlessly at the bottom of the tank, with clean fuel above it, until you encounter rough conditions and it gets stirred up and sucked into the fuel/water separator, completely blocking it. One minute your trusty marine diesel is purring like a kitten, and the next minute it’s not, and there’s nothing you can do to restart it with that blocked fuel/water separator, which is at least a 20 minute job to fix under ideal conditions. You had better hope you have lots of sea room and a strong stomach! But what if you had two fuel/water separators, with a clean one already installed that you could use in seconds with the flick of a $30 switch? Most smart boaters already carry spare fuel/water separator elements so worst case you need to spend a few extra dollars on another housing. If your tank is really dirty the second one will probably plug soon too, but it will likely be enough to get you away from that lee shore and out of immediate danger. Clearly it’s a good idea to keep your tank clean, but if you can’t get around to that before motoring in rough conditions, just fill the tank as full as possible before heading out to reduce the amount of sloshing, as you’re most likely to have problems when your tank is less than half full. If it’s too hard to keep your tank clean then install an access hatch, which is just a piece of metal with some screws and a gasket. It really blows my mind that it’s legal to make and sell a boat without redundant fuel/water separators, because it’s such a common problem and such an inexpensive way to make sure your engine is available to get you out of trouble. But then again, maybe the manufacturers don’t mind it if a yacht or two washes up on the shore, because then they get to sell you another one paid for by the insurance company. One of the things we love about cruising is having TIME! Time to relax, explore, and spend on ridiculous ideas. Anchored inside the amazing Tobago Cays marine park we decide to lift the hook and head outside the reef, to the island of Petit Tobac, where it just so happens that one of the best Pirates of the Caribbean movies was filmed. A simple idea becomes a full on mission and we find ourselves digging a hole to bury a pirates booty of Delos moonshine and some other treasures we pull out of the bilge. A few social media clue posts later and he have ourselves a full on treasure hunt on our hands! After burying our moonshine treasure we return back to Delos so that Brian can begin Phase II of our eco-friendly antifouling paint, which is the installation of our Ultrasonic Antifouling system from Sonihull. We do a quick explanation of how the system works and go over the very basic installation steps. At the same time Brady and Blue are off on a mission to drink beer underwater. Yep, they strap weights to their ankles and attempt to walk on the bottom while drinking beer. It’s a little behind the scenes glimpse into how we film a buy-us-a-beer segment.
