We decide to sail through a labyrinth of uncharted reefs while trying to explore a traditional Kuna Village! After weeks of exploring the outer islands we get word of a Kuna Independence Celebration, and apparently it's cool if we rock up and join the festivities. So we pull up the hook and set sail East to Isla Tigres, a Kuna Village of about 1,500 people. After a very sporty sail through a bunch of reefs we arrive to find the celebration starting early in the morning. It's a full on reenactment of the battle that gained the Kuna People their autonomy from the Panamanian government and a very interesting story. We learned a lot and hope you do too! After more than 80,000 miles sailed, 56 countries visited, an entire circumnavigation of planet earth, and dropping our anchor at countless islands, atolls, and indescribable paradises…this insane island beats them all. We’re here in the Tuamotu Islands of French Polynesia, and we are really and truly in the middle of nowhere out here. About 3,000 miles of open ocean lies between us and Mexico to the north east, and another 3,000 or so in the other direction to New Zealand. We felt like the luckiest family in the world to be able to call this place home for a while, but unbelievably, on this morning, these islands revealed another side of themselves that we can’t even put into words… You can find all the camera gear we use, our must have cruising essentials, tools, recommended reading, safety gear, and more at our amazon storefront! https://svdelos.com/amazon Watch our 4 part docu-series: https://80northseries.com Protect yourself from the sun! https://svdelos.com/rashguards Support Our Videos- Send Us Love http://svdelos.com/beer http://patreon.com/svdelos We're completing our sail around the world, so there's plenty more to see! Amidst the haul-out work on my sailboat Wahine, I caught up with Scott and Mia of SV Tengah, a stunning 54ft Amel. These seasoned sailors arrived in Japan six months ago after an epic journey from the Mediterranean through the South Pacific and, most recently, the Philippines. Every cruiser who comes to Japan asks about anchoring. So this is a hot topic. the two reasons Scott and Mia give for not anchoring are 1. it`s dangerous cuz fishermen are not accustomed to seeing pleasure or small vessels at anchor 2. The `magic of japan` happens at the dockside where you interact with others. Then, they elaborate on other tips, too. Good stuff. Our paths first crossed in Okinawa, where we spent a few weeks at the marina before sailing to the breathtaking Kerama Islands. Over the past six months, I’ve followed their voyage across Japan as they experienced the incredible food, the warm hospitality of the Japanese people, and the unique challenges of cruising in these waters. As they prepare Tengah for their next passage back to the Philippines and I ready Wahine for Chasing the Cherry Blossom 2, we reflect on their journey. Scott and Mia share valuable tips for anyone considering sailing to Japan or curious about what to expect. Their insights may surprise you! Things did not go as planned in any way during my attempt to sail from Faroe Islands to Iceland- on my way to east Greenland. Some times you just have to accept being defeated. The most important thing is how you deal with it, how you get back up. This is what happened, and what forced me to cancel the rest of my adventure. Nature is for sure an overwhelming power not to be underestimated! Im already planning my third attempt to reach Greenland next year. This time I. WILL. MAKE. IT. If you're interesting in more of Nicole's journey: Link to her book "Before Artha" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FHBR1GRW Link to her author website: nicoledemetra.com . . The purpose of this video is to highlight the difficulty's and rarity of a woman doing all the hardest boat projects, all while living in a boatyard. And to encourage more women to follow in Nicole's independent can do attitude. To cast off the dock lines and set sail all on their own. Several times throughout this video I say that Nicole is the only woman I've seen in real life "Doing all the hardest projects by herself in a boatyard". This is not meant to be a jab at anyone, or to say that women can't or haven't ever done this. It is simply a honest statement from what I've seen in boatyards. And something I'd like to see more of. Sailing is easy, boatyards are HARD! Anyone can set the sails, and take the helm. The real difficulties, and the obstacles that Nicole has overcome. That is what impresses me so much. And why I was inspired to make this video. *Message From Nicole aka @NicoleDemetra * "This massive refit has been a learning process for me, and there were some projects that I felt required professional expertise. I’d like to give credit where credit is deserved. Brock helped with my electrical install, mentored me through the hull repair, and was the extra hand I needed for just about any project that came up. Craig repaired the worm damage to the rudder and crafted the new mast step. Dylan welded the mast bracket and a spreader brace. There were also projects that I didn’t have the physical strength to do myself. The guys at the yard were quick to step in when they saw me struggling. Austin and Martin were instrumental in helping me strip the mast. Daniel removed the old bobstay. I’m also fortunate to have a wonderful community both online and in-person. Coppercoat, Zephyrworks, and Bow to Stern Boating stepped in with their own resources to help with supplies and materials. I’ve received generous donations to cover a portion of the refit expenses, and plenty of people here in the DR have loaned me tools and offered words of wisdom. It’s because of this team effort that I’ve accomplished and grown so much, and I’m grateful." Passport Yachts is known for building high-quality bluewater cruisers, and this boat is no exception! She might be starting to show her age slightly, but she's generally in good shape and with a little work she can be ready to cross oceans again. The Passport 40 has a practical, no-nonsense layout designed by Bob Perry. At an asking price of $82,900 this is the most affordable Passport on the market right now that I've found. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Broker info: Pier One Yacht Sales Bud Mueller 248-343-0599 239-332-7998 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sailing Soulianis' Boat Buying Dashboard: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. I venture around Panama city, get a new tattoo and see the Panama Canal before flying back to the U.S for an appointment. Then I have to jump through multiple covid related hoops in order to get back home to Canada. Thanks for watching! On January 16th, 2024 we left Mindelo, Cape Verde for our second leg of Atlantic Ocean Crossing. Winds looked perfect, and we were planning to be in Marinique in 12-14 days. On the 5th day late evening we lost our main mast, then couple hours later, we lost our mizzen mast as main mast was constantly bashing into it. We still don’t know why this happened but here are some of our thoughts after 4 days this disaster happened. Please be kind with your comments as we still in high danger and have couple days to go to reach the shore… - - - - - - And thanks so much for watching 🙏 Stay tuned as next Friday 1PM EST we release a new video 🎥 We do our best to keep you entertained and informed and if you find it fun, enjoyable or informative, consider becoming part of our team and ➡️ join us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/svaquarius ➡️ want to support us, but not sure about long term commitment? "Delos. Delos. This is Cannonball on 16. Do you copy?" Never, ever did we expect to be hailed by Navy Seahawk Chopper in the middle of the ocean. But here we were offshore, speaking to the pilot of this amazing aircraft. "Cannonball- This is Delos. Please switch to channel 69, the Pleasure Channel" It turns out that the pilot and crew followed our videos and just happened to be doing a routine training mission around Cape Hatteras and the Outer Banks. It was an incredibly exhilarating experience to have such a powerful machine circling Delos, with the downwash from the rotor hammering our sails! Shortly after we find ourselves rounding the Notorious Cape Hatteras, AKA The Graveyard of the Atlantic in the middle of the night. With favorable conditions we make short work of the Cape and safely make an entrance into anchorage just outside Beaufort, NC. Another passage in the books! Many hugs and hope you liked the video! I have a new Podcast😎 It's FREE: https://goseatheworld.podbean.com SUPPORT THE FILMS: https://www.patreon.com/misslonestar FAQ Q: What is your back story? A: My name is Aubrey. I was born in the sunny valley of California’s farm land and grew up loving every critter large and small that I could get my hands on (still do). In my late 20’s I moved to Austin Texas, where I met a man and fell in love. He suggested we sell all of our things and move onto a small boat. (We named our first boat “Miss Lone Star”) SO, that is exactly what we did, and six years later here I am. It was the best decision I could have ever made. I am no longer involved with the person who introduced me to this crazy, amazing lifestyle but I will for ever be grateful that I was in the right place ant the right time and was able to find it in myself to do something that truly challenged me. Q: What did you do before you moved onto a boat and became a “Sailing Youtuber”? A: I am a portrait photographer by trade, which made the switch over to creating Youtube videos just a little easier. I currently buy and sell boats behind the scenes to keep the Pirate Ship in fresh varnish and crispy sails. Q: What are your sailing qualifications? A: I have my 50 ton USCG captains license Q: Why did you delete the first two seasons from Youtube? A: The long and the short of it is that, the person I was with was battling a mental illness that I was unaware of. After we broke up it was just too painful to see the videos and read the comments on social media, so I took them down. He later took his own life and looking back now the tragic story seems to make more sense to me. I recently released a video with a bit more of explanation. https://youtu.be/bRSiSCl4kww Q: Where are your children? A: My kids are getting older now, and transitioning into teenage-hood is hard enough without having to do it on social media. So, the kids and I have decided that they will stay out of the films and off of social media as a whole to foster healthy mental development as they grow into young adults. Q: How many boats do you own? A: I have three boats at the moment. The Pirate Ship, a 1977 Formosa 51 that I plan to keep and sail around the world. Little Miss a 1976 2-29 Cal, this is the boat that I started my journey on my own with and just haven’t had the heart to sell. My current boat flip is located in Mexico and is a 1985 Lancer 39 motor sailor we call Murphy. More on my boat flips here: https://www.ketchmeifyoucan.com Q: What is Vimeo and why are you on it? A: Youtube has restrictions on skin and Vimeo does not. I totally understand that Youtube needs to be a safe place for all, and that many people associate bare skin with xx and I do not. In my little floating world I have done my best to normalize the human body, which is why we are moving towards an almost all girl crew, in the seasons to come. We LOVE Youtube and will be keeping it clean and safe for all the watch HERE and will take our free spirited approach to VIMEO https://vimeo.com/ondemand/smls Camera Gear Small camera https://amzn.to/3jh9Uh1 Big Camera https://amzn.to/3qqUus2 Go-to Lens https://amzn.to/3wYr9HZ Sound https://amzn.to/3vY9xKU Everyday tripod https://amzn.to/3dhI3tg

The nightmare conitnues on parlay as we open up a whole can of worms with water ingress between layers of fibreglass in the hull of the boat. You've been waiting, and now it's here. Caulking the hull of this wooden boat. It's not mysterious, but it does take practice, and Arabella's dynamic oak planking edge-set on its inboard edge makes it so we have to be very careful with the amount. If you're able to come this weekend for the hull-fairing (tortureboarding) cookout and work party, RSVP HERE: https://forms.gle/YTrzGRiYR7dmrcCx7 Overcaulked, a wooden boat can break frames or pop planks. It's an extreme result, and not likely to happen, but we're proceeding with caution and good advice from Larry Pardey and Bud McIntosh, as usual. "Details of Boat Construction" and "How to Build a Wooden Boat" came off the book shelf frequently at the start of this build, and still come out from time to time. After caulking, seams are painted with regular topside paint above the waterline in order to protect the cotton, and also to hold it in place. It's driven in there pretty well, but the paint really does help to hold it in place for all our other steps. Thanks to all the volunteers who made bungs and came to bung the boat over a few days. A few thousand went in, and it was quick and efficient. Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built.
