We are now entering our 9th week since leaving Puerto Rico and have been in isolation since early February at an uninhabited island. Ports are closed and entire countries are in lockdown mode. Movements are restricted and quarantines for sailing vessels are in place. We have just decided to stay away from civilization for a minimum of one more month, most likely longer though. Our plans for this season involved some off the grid sailing, but recent events have taken it to a whole new level.... Eine nagelneue Jeanneau Sun Odyssey in 44 Fuß bekommt man für "nur" knapp 240.000 €. Ein solches Angebot erscheint ziemlich attraktiv, wenn man seine eigene Langfahrt vorbereitet und sich bei der Bootssuche in ungefähr diesem Preisbereich aufhält. Allerdings werden verschiedene Schiffe für verschiedene Dinge konzipiert. Manche Modelle sind durch Aufteilung, verwendete Materialien und Konzept allgemein eher für Küstensegeln geeignet, andere Hersteller richten sich von Hause aus mehr auf Langfahrt aus. Und da Langfahrt und Bootskauf unsere Lieblingsthemen sind, haben wir uns auf der BOOT 2020 in Düsseldorf verschiedene Serienhersteller vorgeknöpft und gehen 7 Kriterien durch, die für uns bei der Auswahl eines Blauwasserschiffs eine große Rolle spielen, die allerdings teilweise nur mehr oder weniger gut gelöst worden sind. Es war super interessant, die verschiedensten Hersteller miteinander zu vergleichen. Wir waren auf zwei Jeanneau, Hanse, Sunbeam, Hallberg Rassy, Nordship und Faurby. Und am Ende stellen wir ein Segelboot vor, das unserer Meinung nach die 7 Kriterien sehr gut gelöst hat, damit wirklich Blauwassertauglich ist - allerdings auch seinen Preis hat. Die Sirius 40 DS. When sailing dead downwind in heavy air on a boat with a symmetrical spinnaker, control of the boat eventually will become a problem. One wrong wave, an unexpected puff or momentary loss of concentration by the helmsperson can lead to a gybe broach. This video will give you tips on how to avoid a dangerous, boat breaking gybe broach. To start with, you can’t sail the boat the same way in heavy air as you do in more moderate conditions. You have to trim the sails tighter and sail as much as 10-20 degrees higher than dead downwind. To reduce the chances of a wipe out, you need to prevent the boat from heeling to windward. When the boat heels to windward, the center of effort shifts to windward, forcing to boat to turn to leeward. At high speeds this can make the boat uncontrollable because an attempt to correct the course results in the rudder stalling. This video gives some tips to help prevent gybe broaches.

Milling our planking stock out of our donated cedar and working on figuring out our bronze floor timbers! Buckle up because there is a lot of information here. A lot goes into this project behind the scenes that we don't talk about. Most of that is the mental game of figuring out how to do what we need to do. That also includes learning as much of the ins and outs of the process and why it is done that way. When it came to planking, we researched a myriad of different options at our disposal to come up with the most appropriate way for us. In the end, that meant learning about the local use of our Northern White Cedar and how to deal with its quirks (mainly bunging knots). As for the floor timbers, it was learning about wood, metal and composite floors, along with the pros and cons of each. An amazing day in the water and an amazing time on the beach, and an awful time on board. It's time to work on our apnea training as we get hypoxic. Our freezers are getting dangerously empty and we're getting hungry. Luckily, the ocean is all around us, ready to feed us. All we have to do is dive down and wrangle us some fish! My first dive down I get us dinner, a delicious and healthy Nassau Grouper. After getting chased out of the spot by sharks we decide to call it a day. Besides, our muscles were burning from the workout! Next day, freezer filling time, Jade nails us 3 delicious and invasive lionfish, I get us another grouper and I even manage to get a couple good size Chibs for the dogs. Oh but did I mention we were feeding No See Ums...um my goodness the spawns of the devil. Seriously hate those things.
