Fiberglassing once again! We beef up the area directly around the keel and specifically the keel bolt area. The keel bolts pass through the hull and through the new glass which is bonded to the original grid structure. It is already as thick as factory in this area, but for good measure we just about double the thickness where the bolts go through. We have the glass, time and means, so better to overbuild than underbuild! Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. It's so wild that we can spend the last few months in lush jungles like Panama and Costa Rica, and now here we are arriving in our floating home into a full on desert. But what's even more fascinating is that the vast and barren landscape above the surface is such a sharp contrast to what lies under the surface of the sea. We dive an incredible shipwreck called the Feng Ming, and have one of the strangest and most incredible encounters with a sea turtle that we still can't really explain. We’re into Week 6 of the Vendée Globe, the fleet is at the bottom of the world and life hasn’t got any easier. A big lead has been gobbled up, a rig has come crashing down and the list of casualties has been growing. There's also been some incredible racing with boats in sight of eachother running neck and neck after more than 40 days of racing. Website and Store www.expeditionevans.com Welcome to Expedition Evans. We bought our 2008 Beneteau 49 after it had been ran aground and deemed salvaged. Over the past several months we've been documenting our journey of grinding and sanding to rid the boat of all the bad fiberglass. We then cleaned up the mess and laid hundreds of pounds of new fiberglass and epoxy both inside and outside the boat. Not to mention re drilling keel bolt holes, rebuilding the sump box, media blasting the keel, fairing and painting the keel...there's been a lot going on. An error in almost any one of the previous steps could mean that the keel doesn't line up just right and would require some serious work to fix it. Today we find out. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. We have our scariest moment yet, and of course it's at night. We pride ourselves on being responsible sailors (keeping our family safe), but here we got "caught with our pants down and our spinnaker up" in a gale. While the boat was probably just fine, we lost control and could not reduce sail area. Losing that control is very scary when your family is on board and you don't know what the storm will throw at you next. Often it's the sailors that break before the boats do - and such was the case here. Still, it's terrifying. Months of planning and preparation are complete and we're off the dock and cruising again! Topped up with veggies and fruit we immediately depart Bocas Del Toro for the San Blas Islands. En-route we end up in BlueField Lagoon, a little known but very calm and peaceful lagoon in the middle of no where. We're immediately swarmed by Cayucos who are excited and surprised to see us. They sell us lobster, and ask for pencils and books for their kids. I decide to take a picture with our instant camera and word spreads like wild fire! Before we know it Delos is swarmed by cayucos all wanting to have their photo taken. The Coconut Telegraph is in full effect and word is spreading FAST :) Right up until I run out of instant camera film. Our autopilot has steered us true, but now with over 100,000 miles on her it’s time to upgrade. Time to tackle some boat projects and prepare Delos for the next season offshore! Our autopilot is crucial for our survival offshore, more so now than ever as watching The Little Nugget means Kazza is a single mom and I’m a single handed sailor at sea. We’ve put nearly 80,000 NM on Delos and the previous owner did 30,000 NM so it’s time to replace this crucial piece of gear. We start out by replacing the linear drive, then work our way forward with a new sensor pack, computer, and control head. Amongst the boat projects we find time to do another crucial task- start Sierra’s swimming lessons! Last but not least we give the outside of Delos a little TLC making her hull glisten and replacing some of the original stickers from the start of the trip. For back up redundancy, Chopin has a John Deere 4045DFM75 80HP “get home” wing engine with a v-drive transmission and independent fuel tank, starting battery, shaft and propeller to provide peace of mind when you are miles from the next port of call. Her ABT active fin stabilizers provide exceptional, seakindly, roll reduction offshore and she has a flopper stopper on the port side for use in unruly anchorages. The Maxwell 3500 24V electric windlass runs 400’ of chain rode attached to a 150-pound custom stainless-steel anchor.
