I'll be interested in your thoughts on this but it occured to me that many of you don't care for overnight accomodation because you have a perfectly nice house you like to sleep in or you have another more luxurious boat that fits that mission set quite nicely for you already. So justifying what will be well over a brick ($1M) to buy a Med Style Day Boat may be a hard sell to your partner. This could be when a RIB like this Ital 32GT fit's in quite nicely. She's ultra capable - like excellent riding through the cop - super fast and relatively simple and safe to operate provided you know a thing or two about fast driving. She gives you excellent social spaces plus a toilet and lunching facilities and thats about it. Ultra easy and cheap t service compared to IPS or sterndrive and can be stored on a swinf mooring, regular berth, drive on bricks or rack and stack so gives you a lot of flexibility. Plus she's qiute the looker with so many cool colour choices and accents like the orange against the Army Green. Am I onto something with this thought process? Can you save yourself the bigger spend and be just as happy with this because accomodation is just not that important in your boat life? Keen to hear your thoughts. I liked this brand so will give it some more attention in the future. We have been staying around the Townsville Area for Cyclone Season, so far we have had two cyclone cross land and one category 3 cyclone as a direct hit to Townsville. There is another reason we have been staying up north and it is because Cait has been awaiting a date for a Citizenship Ceremony. Wow...what a day for NYYC American Magic who persisted with their one-boat training session, more out of necessity than design, but put in one heck of a long session of over five hours in tricky, variable and downright honking conditions. The following day... This is my complete step by step guide on "How I Pick, Plan, & Sail 100nm Solo". I've been in Antigua for the past month, but now I need to sail Nortwest to Saint Martin. A distance of 100 nautical miles, and I'll be doing it all alone. Here is exactly how I do this entire process from start to finish. 1. Pick My Final Destination (Why it's the best one to stay at as my new home.) 2. Pick My Sailing Route (A to B to C to D. Antigua to Barbuda, easy trade-downwind to Saint Barts, to SXM) 3. Decide what a good weather window is (Wind, current, swell, jewlls in the atmosphere) 4. Identify drop off routes & alternative anchorages(in case of failures or emergency) (I never use marinas) 5. Wait for that weather window (sometimes you take a bad one rather than wait) 6. Scrap Everything, New plan (because something changed or there is a new weather window. Redo 1-5. In my case, there is a 15-20knots broad reach!!!) 7. Check out of current country (easy enough, but need to give yourself the right amount of time) 8. Float Plan with other Competent Sailor (Talk to someone who knows you, your sailing ability, your boat and it's ability. Someone who understands the ocean and sailing. So if something does go wrong, they know who to call or what to do.) 9. Final prep (stowing or strapping down everything encase of worst seas. Always plan for the worst in the ocean, meal prep, water, entertainment,...) 10. Set sail from Antigua (leaving the anchorage early early at dark because I know the area thankfully and have mentally prepared ahead of time.) 11. Sailing The Distance Alone (LOOOOOT to talk about here. Troubles along the way. Trimming the sails. Checking up on my navigation frequently. Making sure I'm on the best course. How I keep safe, fed, hydrated, entertained....) 12. Final Approach (Sailing into “French side” SXM in the dark and anchoring. Note that sailing into a place at dark is not normal if you don't know the area and can be very dangerous.) 13. Into the country (Waking up early the next morning, ducking the bridge, anchoring in the lagoon, get a French coffee & croissant, check into French side of SXM, back on boat and finally done! Bonus: Final review of the whole process..... (I am not a professional sailor, but this is what's worked for me over the years and thousands of nautical miles I've sailed. I'll be interested in your thoughts on this but it occured to me that many of you don't care for overnight accomodation because you have a perfectly nice house you like to sleep in or you have another more luxurious boat that fits that mission set quite nicely for you already. So justifying what will be well over a brick ($1M) to buy a Med Style Day Boat may be a hard sell to your partner. This could be when a RIB like this Ital 32GT fit's in quite nicely. She's ultra capable - like excellent riding through the cop - super fast and relatively simple and safe to operate provided you know a thing or two about fast driving. She gives you excellent social spaces plus a toilet and lunching facilities and thats about it. Ultra easy and cheap t service compared to IPS or sterndrive and can be stored on a swinf mooring, regular berth, drive on bricks or rack and stack so gives you a lot of flexibility. Plus she's qiute the looker with so many cool colour choices and accents like the orange against the Army Green. Am I onto something with this thought process? Can you save yourself the bigger spend and be just as happy with this because accomodation is just not that important in your boat life? Keen to hear your thoughts. The last few passages have been ones we won't soon forget - but would like to. Sailing to windward, flooding the boat with salt water and all bilge pumps failing, losing our anchor on passage and scaring the crap out of ourselves. We've had a few nights in the marina for repairs, maintenance and reprovisioining, now we're filling up and heading north. With looming storms, we start to anticipate yet another uncomfortable passage. You never know whats around the corner when you're sailing. Episode 1 Since 1986 the World Cruising Club organizes the popular Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, a transatlantic crossing from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Saint Lucia in the Lesser Antilles, a route that was Columbus' in 1502. The 2.700 miles crossing conquered the heart of thousand of sailors eager to cross the Atlantic in company, and above all, in total safety. After what’s been a really positive start to 2024 for INEOS Britannia with the arrival of their second AC40 and an intense programme of race training and sail testing, today an unfortunate and completely unexpected electrical fire on their AC40 ‘Athena’ brought the training session to a close and required fast, quick-thinking action from the team’s superb on-water safety team to rescue the yacht and get her back to base.
