Sailing 7,000 miles over 7 months we finally make landfall in Madagascar! The last few days of the sail have been very hectic though and we wake up to high 30 knots of breeze and 4-5 meter seas left over from the gale the night before. The crew is in high spirits because we made good progress overnight and are only 32 miles away the northern cape of Madagascar! We cruise around the cape making 14 knots of boat speed in 40 knots of wind. It's wicked sailing but soon we are behind the lee and protection of Madagascar and reach Nosy Be where we drop the hook. We're welcomed to the yacht club with all the food we've been craving. Cheap, cold beers and delicious salads and pizza. There's live music, dancing, and a super cool atmosphere. We begin to fall in love with Madagascar. This is our story, a story of three souls sailing around the world. It is a story about sailing, but it's also a story about the fantastic people we meet and amazing places we see. It's a story of people living their lives in an alternate way, in close connection with the beautiful people and amazing planet that we call home. Our experience has affected us so profoundly we want to share it, hoping that others may find inspiration to follow their dreams and do what they love. My first motor vessel! I didn't even know Gulfstar made motor yachts, but this one was certainly impressive. Twin Perkins diesels, a generator, water-maker, 500 gallons of fuel, 250 gallons of water and insane amounts of storage. Thank Phil for the tour of his 1979 Gulfstar 44, m/v After Five. Presented annually by Mystic Seaport since 2006, the "America and the Sea Award" recognizes an individual or organization whose contributions to the history, arts, business or sciences of the sea best exemplify the American spirit and character. Mystic Seaport presented its 2016 America and the Sea Award to Bob and Rod Johnstone – the brothers that co-founded J/Boats. The Johnstones received the award Saturday, October 22 at a gala black-tie dinner held in their honor at the Museum. The gala was the first and only dinner held in the Collins Gallery in the new Thompson Exhibition Building prior to its ongoing use to display exhibits. “Over the past 39 years, the Johnstone family and their company have influenced American yachting and sport of sailing in incomparable ways. In 2015 Sinot Yachts announced its new superyacht concept, which surely can be called a revolutionary. The idea is that this vessel will be able to sail both way. The "bi-directional" yacht will have the same shape of both the after and the bow, and the symmetry will be build from the centre out.
