This week, Ryan is in Singapore for work and I tried to wax the hull of Polar Seal by myself! Polar Seal hadn’t been waxed in at least 3 years. Her gelcoat started to show some signs of fatigue, in the form of big dark stripes running down the deck. Things didn’t start off very well, as I realized that I was lacking the proper tools to work. In order to execute the task safely, I need a ladder with a little platform, and also someone else to help me! Polar Seal was standing way too high for me to work on her. After the first day, I left the marina a little low, feeling bad about my skills. But I didn’t give up, and eventually got some help from a good friend, Marika. Our fantastic harbor master let me use his tools, and I was all set to get going! Once I got my hands on both tools and an extra pair of hands, I got really confused by the multitude of steps and products involved. It took me an entire morning to figure out how I was actually going to take care of the task. Another friend of mine, Frida, had told me that she and her dad use a miracle technique to rub the hull, using a solution of water and white spirit. Upon trial, that technique didn't seem to work, and I was back to square one. DAH. How do you actually wax a boat?! Wash/rubbing compound/polish/wax/wax sealant…. It’s all so confusing! Once the harbor master told me what to do, I finally engaged in the very unglamorous task of rubbing the hull with compound and a buffing machine. The task turned out very tiring, and the next day, I figure out a way to make things go forward: making my friends work ;) That very friend just so happened to Frida, whose technique turned to work perfectly, and we ended up finishing rubbing the hull without a buffing machine. In this video, Frida demonstrates the miracle recipe: 1dl of white spirit mixed with 4dl of water in a spray bottle, shake and spray a layer of solution on the hull before rubbing it with a cloth and rubbing compound. Bam! The boat turns so shiny that you can actually put make-up on and use the hull as a mirror (almost ;)) Ryan was quite impressed with my work, and Polar Seal is now ready to be launched! Conclusion: I absolutely NOT waxed the boat on my own, and I am very grateful for all the friends we have who help us. Without them, we wouldn't sail very far!
Music by Kogane (https://soundcloud.com/kokogane) Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon If Patreon isn't your thing, I also have a Paypal.me link: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon I've also created an Amazon Wish List if you'd like to purchase specific items I'll need as the build continues: http://a.co/dx7F4dz I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world. I make travel vlogs sharing my ups and downs, adventures on motorbikes, sailboats, and vans. Instagram: @Finding_Simon Snapchat: Finding_Simon Twitter: @FindingSimon Donations: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon Merchandise: http://simonstiles.com/finding-simon/ :::::::FAQ::::::: - How do you afford to travel constantly? A: I travel really cheap, free camping, cooking my own meals, being as efficient as possible. I make my income almost entirely on YouTube but it's really tight. Ad revenue, patreon, paypal donations, merchandise sales and affiliate links bring in about as much as a part time minimum wage job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough I go back to work, doing photography mostly, sometimes commercial video projects, but it takes me away from my travels and videos. - How much does it cost? I spend on average $2000 travelling, most of which is gas, some repairs, food, and on average less than $200 on any eating out, shopping or extra curricular expenditures. I make $200 a month from YouTube and $400 from Patreon. The rest I make from my work. - What camera do you use? Sony A7ii, DJI Mavic Pro, Rode Videomic with Deadcat, Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, DIY tripods and lights. - What is your bike? 1999 Yamaha Vstar XVS1100 with a Champion Escort sidecar. - What kind of boat is that? It's a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 - What're your plans? Fix it up, run nothing but green power, sail off into the sunset. - How do you find all these cool places? To gain access to my complete research you need to hit me up on Patreon, but here's a few sites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/ https://www.campendium.com/ http://www.atlasobscura.com/ https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - What do you do for Internet? I use coffeeshops and libraries to upload episodes a few at a time, I also use my wifi antenna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T9lNM8Mukk&t=2s) and a data package on my phone (10GB) - How do you live on the road with a dog? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with my dog anyways, especially if it's warm out in the middle of the day. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make some decisions, avoiding places that ban dogs, and spending more time out in nature instead of in the cities. - What happened to the girl? We decided to go separate ways (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPgxDIXxCjY&t=4s) - Are you rich or something? definitely not. I've spent some quality time homeless, I've struggled financially most of my life, and although I'm blessed with great friends and family as well as being able bodied white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to travel the world. You need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, time with family, and often your career but it is possible. - Why don't you have 10x more subscribers? My channel isn't that old, many of the bigger channels you can compare mine to started putting out videos a couple years before I began. I could always use your help sharing my videos, spreading the word, and connecting with cross promotional opportunities. Editing and travelling tend to take up all my time. - Where are you now? The top perk on my Patreon page is a live link of my location on google maps so you can get an active idea of where I am currently. If that's not an option for you there's also Instagram and Instagram stories that give you a much better idea of what I'm up to today.

Refitting the boat is a major undertaking. We knew it would be, but knowing it and living it are two very different things. It seemed like we always had 4 projects going at once and there was never enough roo to put everything. Not to mention we were living on the boat at the time and had to have room for such basic things as eating and sleeping! This is the highlights of the first month of the refit. It jumps around a bit because that’s how it really was. Not to mention Ryan was still working full time at this point! But we made good progress at getting at completely replimbing the freshwater system, putting new stickers on, and starting to rebuild our hull. WANT A SHIRT? Ahoy followers! Go offshore with us as Phillip and I sail our Niagara 35 five days across the Gulf of Mexico in some sporty bluewater conditions on our way to the Bahamas. That’s right, Video Annie is back! Well, under some conditions. I definitely HAD to take a break last year from YouTube. Trying to film and produce weekly full-length quality videos to earn Ad and Patreon money proved brutal and straining on our ability to actually enjoy our cruising. For that reason, I stepped back and did not produce videos for a while. But, I do love to film and produce, just at a leisure pace that does not interfere with our enjoyment of the experience and not for any pay, just for fun. And, I’ve put together some amazing videos from our voyage to the Bahamas. I have been publishing them on my blog only, but after several die-hard YouTube fans reached out asking me to share them here, too, I decided to do that. Just putting them up for fun, at a slow pace, so you YouTubers can enjoy as well. But, if you have been craving some HaveWind for a while now and want to get all caught up immediately, be my guest! There are dozens of articles, posts, and I believe about ten videos now from our Bahamas voyage, all just waiting for you there. Feel free to start here (www.havewindwilltravel.com/2018/01/04/bv1-packing-weather-planning-passage-day-one/) and work your way forward through the posts chronologically. In blog time, we’re at Green Turtle Cay right now for New Year’s 2018. Sweet! I will always write and produce at www.HaveWindWillTravel.com because I love writing, photographing and filming, and I have a passion for sharing our adventures. This video covers one of our more intense offshore runs with 24 hours of 20-25 kts of wind and 6-8 (to sometimes 10) foot seas, but the boat and crew proved more than capable and we had a helluva time laying another 500 nm under our keel on our way to the Bahamas. We can’t wait to share the rest of the voyage with you. Hope you enjoy this first offshore leg! Buckle up! It’s one heck of a ride!

Do you want to know our secrets to anchoring like a superyacht? Want to know how to anchor a boat safely & easily? Well, watch on friends. We met a superyacht captain a few years back. Over a few beers he told us how superyachts anchor so that they don't drag and don't damage their equipment. It was enlightening. In over 12 years of sailing and anchoring, we were still picking up little tips. So rather than asking you to wait, we thought we would package all this information up and tell you exactly how we anchor. So, no more sleepless nights, no more worrying over dragging and waking up in the shipping lanes. And don't forget our awesome competition for our Subscribers. It’s been 13 days that we’ve been out at sea for now and we’re starting to lose the plot. But we’re nearly there! Join us with some propellor dramas, devastating wine spillage and a bit of whinging from me (Elayna) as we get closer to land. It was bound to happen. The insomnia is real. Hello there! Here's two very nice games I had, live stream, in the Atlanta a couple of weeks ago, and I though it would be adequate to share it again here! Thanks for watching, and enjoy! Catch me live on stream at www.twitch.tv/thesailingrobin
We are honing our sailboat and our skills as sailors as we prepare to sail to the Caribbean. It has been a process getting to the point we can actually sail. Part of the preparation is sailing classes. As novice sailors we decided to take the ASA (American Sailing Association) Classes. We completed ASA 103 costal cruising and ASA 104 Bareboat cruising with Captain Bill Brooker at Sarabay Sailing. And we got to do the classes on our sailboat, sv Dodi. Thank you Bill for teaching us and putting up with us and our boat. She did break down the first day on the water, but Nic Morganti had her up and sailing in no time. The next 3 days we smooth sailing sort of. We had lots to learn. That's the boat Life! This is The Boat Life. Nic Morganti and Melissa Auman are moving onto a sailboat. The plan was sell everything, buy a boat, live on a boat, and travel and explore the Caribbean and the world while living aboard! The uniform is boardshorts and bikinis. Simple plan, but lots to learn and do along the way. Join our adventure as we sail away on sv Dodi, our Island Packet IP27, live on a sailboat, and explore life aboard. This is our sailing travel vlog The Boat Life. Thanks for watching! Want to see more videos. Make a donation to help produce more episodes of The Boat Life. Steps that may help you prepare your children for tomorrow. We are not saying we have all the answers, just like you, we struggle with decisions we have made. There is not a one size fits all and we all make mistakes when it comes to raising our kids, but we do the best we can with the tools we have available to us at that time. We think kids should know before they go out on their own how to grow there wealth, not just make it. When we were young we were taught to work really hard and pay your debt, while this was great advice it was only half of the equation. Yes, we need to work hard, also should pay our financial obligations, but we always pay ourselves first. This means we write ourselves into the monthly expenses, not just hoping for leftovers. What we have worked over the years is to teach our children to invest for their future, not to become debtors enslaved to a life they can not change. Yes, we said slave, because as financial responsibilities go up it limits or restricts prospects for the future. They may not be able to do something they love, financial obligates may exceed what their dream will afford. Also without having a safety net, they may be moving back home when bumps come up, like car repair, or you lose a job. Our advice to our kids starting out was to save and invest when you can put 25% or more of your pay in investments just do it. Have fund ready to cover things that pop up, our son just had an issue with his car, but at the age of 19, he had the funds to fix it. Have a budget for your money, remember to pay yourself, and always know where your money is going. And finally think before you spend, your cash is directly tied to your time, when you are looking at things to buy think, how much time will that cost me. We hope this help other parents, raising your children can be hard, but watching them grow up into successful productive adults is rewarding. Parents you are the ones planting the seeds for tomorrows future, our future leaders of industry and business.
