Sailing to San Blas, Panama We entered the island archipelago from the east and stayed for four days - but if you have the time it's worth staying longer. For safe navigation in this region, as well as all the usual tools and techniques, it is best to use the Panama Naval Navigation Book called: The Panama Cruising Guide by Eric Bauhaus. Pay rigorous attention to this book, which we also found useful on the Pacific side of Panama. These islands reminded us of our stay on the Pearl Islands Plan your approach carefully, with particular attention to your draught. As you approach the shallows it is very useful to have a lookout on the bow, who should ideally be wearing polarised sunglasses. This makes it much easier to see shallow areas or coral heads that may not be marked on the chart. It is also preferable to approach with the sun behind you The docking options on the islands are almost limitless.  We avoided approaching the central island, Nalunega and the nearby islands, where there is also an organised 'entrance' that includes payment to the authorities of the Kuna tribe.  The most important recommendations:  Avoid damaging underwater pipes when anchoring and remember that every coconut, whether on the tree or on the sand or floating in the water belongs to the Kuna tribe. We anchored near the 'swimming pool' and chose to anchor near the island inhabited by two small families and an island with only a small strip of sand around it.  We swam ashore and walking around it really  'connected' us to the eternal peace of the islands. However, when we returned to the boat we noticed a nine-foot-long crocodile that was slowly swimming near the reef where we had just been snorkelling!!! It seemed frightening, but later on a visit to the inhabited island (safely in the dinghy), we were told that "small crocodiles are old friends, and have never harmed us" The Barbecue Island is a beach where yachtsmen gather for an evening on the beach. everyone brings food and drinks for a shared meal and a chance to compare stories and experiences. While stuck at anchor in Santa Ponsa waiting for our water pump and battery charger to arrive, we decide to go ashore and check the ridiculously loud music keeping us awake at night! It turned out to be the Festival del Rei en Jaumer - a week long festival of food, music and entertainment which ended with a foam party and magnificent firework display! Having Granddad onboard gave us another excuse to go to Palma again and this time we visited the impressive, Palma Cathedral and try the local paella and sangria. Two weeks without water pump meant we had to desperately seek out swimming pools and beach showers and manually pump 20L of water into the solar shower.. which didn't go far with 6 of us onboard! It was a smelly boat by the time our @MARCOspaCompany water pump and the #mastervolt battery charger turned up. The kids quickly turned the packaging into new toys and Woody fitted the new equipment and fun though Santa Ponsa was, it was a relief to be on the move again Homeschooling continued and for science we made a @yankodesign scale model of Theo Jansen's strandbeest - so cool! We then visited @JungleParcMallorc the Treetops adventure playground for some fun in the trees! The Balearic islands seemed to attract a lot of storms later in the season and we began thinking of shelter for the winter and perhaps even finding a Spanish school for the kids as they've had little opportunities to socialise with other kids lately. Then more maintenance issues - our @Raymarine autopilot gave up! :/ It becomes quite demoralising after a while - things constantly breaking down all the time. We finally left Mallorca (or is it Majorca?) for Ibiza in what we thought was a good weather window, but as Woody was calmly enjoying a cup of his beloved @yorkshiretea we sailed straight into a thunderstorm! Luckily we came through unscathed so we poled out the head sail (the set up copied from a year 2000 @AmelYachts brochure!) and headed for San Antonio. Rowan read her current favourite book by @DanBrown while the boys played and learned about sound signals and navigation! Then disaster struck. As we were leaving the dock after a final water stop, we ripped a huge hole in the dinghy which on top of everything else going wrong on the boat was completely demoralising - this is not a good way to 'live the dream'. We still had several hundred miles to travel.. and now no dinghy to get to shore. So as the end of the summer season draws to a close - we head to Almerimar for the winter and catch up with blogs and maintenance.. and if anyone has any of the following going spare... This cliché mantra always passes through my mind as I attempt to solve a problem that I'm not qualified to fix. But that's sailing life! Things break and there's no magic repair technician there to help you troubleshoot the vast array of issues that inevitably come up on a sailboat. Fortunately, this time I'm prepared. Our fridge has been dying a slow death and today it finally decides to crap-out. The saving grace: We have 2 cooler sized fridge-freezers on board. That's right, 2 backups for this exact issue. Now I can procrastinate repairing the fridge and go for a snorkel instead. Ahhhh, gotta love saving today's problems for tomorrow. It's OK, future you will sort it out...one day. If you're not interested in Sailboat Issues like our refrigerator dying in the tropics feel free to skip ahead. The drone footage of our stunning anchorage here in Moorea starts at 06:11 then we dive into the best snorkeling we've experienced here in French Polynesia. Before we even leave the shadow of our catamaran we're free-diving 50 feet down to say hi to a couple of eagle rays, a sting ray and a black-tip shark. The water is cool and crystal clear and the underwater creatures are beautiful. Partir en kayak pour faire de la plongée, telle est notre spécialité. Ce jour là, nous sommes partis de la plage de la ZAC Vallée III à Longoni pour aller jusqu'au récif de la Prévoyante. Sur place, un dauphin nous accueille. Il prend 2 respirations en surface puis disparaît, le spectacle est déjà sympa. Nous nous préparons donc à plonger et nous voilà à l'eau quelques minutes plus tard. Le dauphin est revenu et nous a fait le cadeau de rester pendant 40 minutes, à passer entre nous, à jouer dans les bulles, à aller voir le kayak que nous traînions à l'aide d'un bout. Plongée et journée magique. Merci Mayotte

Living aboard and travelling in a 34ft yacht and in a motorhome with four kids. The head from Great Barrier over to Whangarei and up to the town basin marina for a couple of nights. Then back out and north to Matapouri. We are a family of six who are taking some time out of normal life to travel. We’ve pulled the kids from school and are home schooling while on the road and the water. We spend time aboard our 34ft sailing boat in NZ and have bought a motorhome in Europe so as to tour the other side of the world. We’re keeping our memories on video here and the kids write narration and play guitars so we have music to use in the videos.
